i just think that if someone white was to have said black trash there would have been a big uproar so im pleased to see that the white trash comment is having the same effect

I thought it was a bit harsh as well. Doesn't do much to help the racism in the country... but then again it is only a soap.

I agree. I watched Corrie last night and didnt feel in the least bit offended by it. The remark happened to be made by an Asian character. So what!!! The term is in widespread use throughout places like America and is generally used by white people to describe people who are less well off than them. Had he used the term Trailer Trash which has a similar meaning would all those people who love Trailers have been up in arms. I think it says more about the politically correct attitude of Britain today than anything else. Grow up people.

i didnt think of it as racista at all especially as Sunita was like telling him it was wong. I think viewers sometimes want to argue for the hell of it.

Exactly! It was clear he had no clue about the outside world, I was disgusted by the way he spoke to Sunita, but she stood up for herself. If anything I would have thought Asians would be up in arms about the comment he made, because of the way it portrayed them.

That scene was overshadowed a bit by the Rosie storyline, but it definetely stood out in my mind. The fact that Sunita would even consider going back to a family like that is beyond me. I was just angry at the character though, and wouldn't feel any need to complain to the writers. It's there job to create drama.

What a lot of fuss about nothing. I hear a lot worse almost every day and it never bothers me. My God how sad is Britain today when people over-react to a throwaway remark that is in everyday usage

Blame the PC brigade. I heard this sort of stuff in Corrie and EE during the 80s and nobody complained to the IBA then. How times change.

I come from Northern Ireland and no matter when I leave these beautiful shores I am called Paddy. I dont take offence at it but no doubt if the PC brigade heard me being called it they would be on their phones to the race realations board and Scotland Yard would be sending an armed response unit round to arrest whoever was involved for so called hate crimes. How pathetic. Please join the real world. Sticks and stones etc etc

definately we cant mention anything about their race without the police getting called whilst we have to put up with talk like that

Total over reaction, red kneck, trailer trash, white trash - common terms used by any American or person who watches American TV.

I don't think that these terms are racist. They are unplesant, patronising and superior, but that is a separate issue.

I can understand where your coming from, but in this case I think it's been blown way out of proportion. Coronation Street is a soap, and we were shown one character's opinion. They wouldn't be portraying the character properly if they didn't show what he was like.

i still dont think it should have been said if it was rosie to amber it would be a total diff story

We are making this a racist comment by commenting on the colour of the character who said it.

So who is being racist?

It was used in context and showing how the charcter felt. sunita told him he was wrong anyway. It shouldnt matter. There would have been less complaints if it had been dirrceted at black people

Exactly, all this fuss is ridiculous. Are people really effected this much by one sentence said in a soap?! It's a storyline.

MediaGuardian today reports that Ofcom today cleared the use of the term "poor white trash" by an Asian character in Coronation Street, despite receiving complaints from over 500 viewers. Ofcom said while the term had "obvious racist overtones", its use on the ITV soap was justified by the context and could be used to describe "those from a lower socio-economic group".

Clearing ITV, Ofcom said it was important that TV dramas were able to reflect modern society and to raise potentially controversial subjects such as race from differing perspectives.

Just because someone might say it in "real life", doesnt mean it should be said on a tv programme.

Using that analagy, a soap could say whatever they wanted, swearing / derogatory terms etc and say its "ok" because its said in "real life".

The only point some on here are trying to make is that if the comment had been made against a different race / group of people it would probably have been taken further. :)
