DS Ramani De Costa (Thusitha Jayasundera) and DC Terry Perkins (Bruce Byron) join forces to investigate missing child, Esther Obonyo (Candassie Liburd). When it becomes clear that Esther has been trafficked into the country for a life of servitude, the Child Abuse Investigation Team’s DCI Caddick (Robert Cavanah) is brought in to help and is immediately impressed by Ramani’s ability to build links with Pastor Bernard Wamuyu (Wale Ojo) and the community.

Meanwhile, Cindy (Jacqueline Defferary) is upset when DS Phil Hunter (Scott Maslen) makes it clear to her that he was only considering adoption. He, in turn, is outraged to learn she’s already been in touch with Social Services. Later, DC Jo Masters (Sally Rogers) criticises Phil when he tries to fob wife Cindy (Jacqueline Defferary) off with a bunch of flowers. However, this time the flowers don’t suffice and Phil bows down to Cindy’s wishes, saying if kids are so important to her they should go ahead and adopt. But this compromise doesn’t impress Cindy who realises that they would just be patching over their troubles by adopting. Can they work things out or is it over between them?

Also, Terry allows himself a glimmer of hope for him and Ramani when she ends her relationship with Saul (Darren Saul).

Imprisoned Sergeant Dale Smith (Alex Walkinshaw) is distraught when DC Zain Nadir (TJ Ramini) breaks the bad news that the prime suspect and Pete Larson’s (Graham McTavish) middleman are still missing. Smithy is cynical, even with Superintendent Adam Okaro (Cyril Nri) acting as surety, he doesn’t think anything will sway the judge at his bail hearing that day. Zain is spurred on to clear Smithy’s name once and for all.

Zain tries to convince Adam that witness Carl Caplan (Graham Turner) is a plant and with DI Neil Manson (Andrew Lancel) relieved to be back on side at Sun Hill, the atmosphere is awkward when DCI Frank Keane (Lorcan Cranitch) from the DPS interrupts their conversation. Zain discovers that Caplan has been seen using a mobile phone after saying in his witness statement he didn’t own one and believing the lie is enough to warrant an arrest and a search of Caplan’s house, leaves in search of the witness. Accompanied by a reluctant DC Mickey Webb (Chris Simmons), Zain threateningly confronts Caplan in his office and manages to arrest him for handling stolen goods. While Caplan is questioned by DCI Jack Meadows (Simon Rouse) at the station, Zain frantically turns the flat over looking for any evidence to do with Larson setting Smithy up.

Livid with Zain and Mickey, DCI Keane tells the pair they went too far with Caplan and warns them to leave him alone. Mickey is flabbergasted when Zain immediately calls the Financial Investigation Unit asking for information on Caplan’s file. With just two hours left until Smithy’s bail hearing, Zain tells Mickey that Caplan recently received a loan from a finance company for £25,000. Adamant the money has come from Larson, Zain goes to Caplan’s flat and aggressively accuses Caplan of taking the ‘loan’ as payment for his witness statement. Sweating under intense interrogation from Zain, Caplan starts to crack. But since discovering the renegade cop is at Caplan’s house, his questioning is cut short at a crucial moment when Keane finds Zain, throws him out of the house and off of the case. Has Zain completely blown Smithy’s chances of receiving bail and ever escaping prison?

Also, DS Ramani De Costa (Thusitha Jayasundera) and DC Terry Perkins (Bruce Byron) investigate a distraught young woman who claims to have been abused by her father (Simon Williams) as a child. Twenty years on, they find it is a tough case to investigate and their attempts aren’t made any easier when Sarah’s (Sarah Churm) therapist proves obstructive. DCI Caddick (Robert Cavanah) is so impressed when Ramani and Terry get to the bottom of the case, that he offers Ramani a job.
