An earlier video message from his boyfriend appears to have increased Pete's desire to get out sooner rather than later.
"I can't bear it," he told Michael as he threw clothes into his case. "A TV camera makes it harder. It's not good for my health. I just want to pack and go."
Michael urged Pete to think rationally about the situation, telling him: "It's just how you're feeling at the moment. If you had a fag in your mouth you'd be right as rain."
Pete acknowledged that the lack of nicotine was in part to blame but began to lash out in all directions when Michael tried to talk him round.
"The cameras are over there, Michael," he said after Michael explained why he knew how Pete was feeling.
When the news of the incident reached the others, Dennis suggested they exchange their deluxe hamper for cigarettes and coffee. Sir Jimmy entered the diary room and successfully negotiated the deal. "The principle is, that it's been fixed," he announced to the group.
Pete, meanwhile, insisted that having cigarettes was only the tip of the issue. Not even compliments from George could shake his adamance. "I don't want to hear that," he said. "I don't want you to butter me up
