Following the recent dramatic events, PCs Tony Stamp (Graham Cole) and Yvonne Hemmingway (Michele Austin) rouse a confused Sergeant Smith (Alex Walkinshaw) who is slumped over the wheel of his crashed car. At the hospital, Yvonne reluctantly arrests a stunned Smithy for drink driving when he fails two breath tests. After explaining that Louise Larson (Rosie Marcel) was killed as a result of the accident, Smithy collapses and is helped up by Tony. Yvonne and Tony escort stunned Smithy back to Sun Hill and stand by his side as Sergeant June Ackland (Trudie Goodwin) awkwardly signs him in.
Yvonne fills Superintendent Adam Okaro (Cyril Nri) in on the evidence so far which clearly implicates Smithy’s involvement in the murder of Louise. He is bailed until the following day and Adam insists he gets some sleep in the hope that memories will start to come back. Yvonne offers him a bed for the night and when he is finally left alone, he breaks down, devastated, and heart-broken about Louise’s sudden death and the bewildering circumstances surrounding it.
DCI Jack Meadows (Simon Rouse) allows DC Zain Nadir (TJ Ramini) to do a bit of digging on the sly in a desperate attempt to clear Smithy’s name under the watchful eye of DCI Frank Keane (Lorcan Cranitch) from the DPS. Yvonne takes over as Acting Sergeant and fields questions to the relief before sending them out on duty and DI Neil Manson (Andrew Lancel), working for MIT, also returns in an attempt to help all he can.
Scared and frustrated by his lack of memory, Smithy takes a deep breath and prepares to be questioned by DCI Keane and Neil. Desolate, Smithy hears the evidence stacked up against him from Keane and Neil pleads for something more concrete from him. Smithy furiously tells them he must have been drugged and set up by Pete Larson (Graham McTavish). He is horrified when Keane attempts to get him to confess that he was drunk behind the wheel and deliberately murdered Louise. Smithy breaks down, prematurely ending the interview.
Adam is optimistic when DCI Keane tells him they have found a witness on some CCTV tapes which have been given to PCs Roger Valentine (John Bowler) and Emma Keane (Melanie Gutteridge) to look at. It’s clear from Roger’s ranting that the DPS are unpopular and he is embarrassed when Emma tells him that Frank Keane is her dad. Roger and Emma eventually get a lead at a local pub where the witness seen on the CCTV is a regular. They track down a frightened Carl Caplan (Graham Turner) and bring him back to the station for questioning. Neil is hopeful when Carl says he would be able to spot the driver in a video identity parade but that is soon shattered when during the parade, Smithy is chosen.
DCI Keane, Adam, Neil and Yvonne make their way towards an ashen-faced Smithy. Barely able to speak, Yvonne charges Smithy with the murder of Louise. Staring straight at her, Smithy hands over his warrant card and is led to a cell where the door closes behind him.
Elsewhere, fed up with working and living in Britain, JT (Nick Patrick) stuns his colleagues by leaving Sun Hill to live in Spain with his boyfriend.

Terrified, Sergeant Dale Smith (Alex Walkinshaw) puts on a brave face when fellow Sergeant June Ackland (Trudie Goodwin) enters his cell to let him know he is due for his court appearance. The relief shout words of support to a handcuffed Smithy as he is led away for his hearing.
DC Zain Nadir (TJ Ramini) is enraged on hearing that Smithy has been refused bail and DCI Jack Meadows (Simon Rouse) takes charge. He tells CID that they are looking for the middle-man who helped Pete Larson (Graham McTavish) fit Smithy up for murder and to speak to all of Larson’s known associates. Zain finds scruffy Mancunian, Matt Finney (Christopher Coghill), who is house-sitting for a member of Larson’s men, Andy Baker, and eager to question Finney about Baker’s whereabouts, he gets the opportunity to arrest him when he finds class A drugs in the house. After an unsuccessful interview with Finney, Jack suggests emailing his photo to the GMP before releasing him. Zain visits Smithy who is imprisoned in Longmarsh prison with photographs of both Finney and Baker in a vain attempt to see if Smithy recognises either of them. Zain and Smithy’s hopes are dashed when he admits their faces don’t mean anything to him.
Meanwhile, PC Emma Keane (Melanie Gutteridge) proves her worth by helping to uncover evidence to suggest that Matt Finney is in fact, Pat Gannon – a known killer and cousin to Andy Baker. Zain is left furious that CID have lost the suspected hit man and middleman. Jack, Zain and S019 race to Baker’s house only to find that Finney has done a runner. Frustrated, Zain calls Smithy to update him and admits to letting Gannon go but he promises they’ll nail him soon. Smithy smashes phone against a wall and is restrained by two wardens who escort him back to his cell. Alone, grieving and desperate, Smithy holds his head in despair.
Also, DS Ramani De Costa (Thusitha Jayasundera) and DC Suzie Sim (Wendy Kweh) explore a case involving a young girl called Lydia (Lakechia Jeanne), who appears to have been hurt during a ritual Angolan exorcism. Ramani liaises with the family’s church pastor, Bernard Wamuyu (Wale Ojo) and forms a solid connection that may help with future cases. Eventually they net a good result, but Ramani is left jaded by CSU work. Terry invites her for a drink but ends up having to cover his jealously when she invites Saul (Darren Saul) along too.
