EastEnders confirmed today that Nicky Henson will be joining the show to play the character of Jack Edwards. Henson will appear on screen at the end of February playing the father of Honey Edwards, part-time barmaid in The Queen Vic and full-time girlfriend of Billy Mitchell.

Nicky takes over the role of Jack Edwards that was originally due to be played by David Essex. Essex was replaced once it had been decided that the character of Jack would be staying in Walford for longer than had originally been planned and longer than Essex was able to be on the show.

Nicky said: "I'm really looking forward to joining EastEnders. Jack gets stuck in from the minute he arrives. He is your typical over-protective dad and seems intent on giving Billy a hard time from the start."

Nicky Henson has been a regular of the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Society, as well as starring in a string of television and film roles over more than 30 years.

Looks like a nice looking man for Honeys dad...plus his credits as an actor is pretty LONNNNNNGGGGG

Eastenders are getting some talented actors in, in that pic by Jodi, I thought it was Terry Gilliam, must be my eyes going funny, lets hope he brings something to the show.

never heard of him or seen him before! Thats cos you a lucky enough to be younger than me,he is one of those actor that has been in lots of things over the years,but no big block busters,He is a very good actor,often plays cockneys,so I think he will fit in well.

I think it's a nice idea to bring Honey's dad into it. She's going to find out she's pregnant soon, and it will be good for her to have her family around her. I don't think he's going to be like Den, because it didn't really work. Somebody can be protective of their daughter without being over the top like Den or Johnny.

If Billy and Honey are planning to get married in the near future (once he's divorced Little Mo), Billy will have an extra member of the family too. Which will be nice for him, since the Mitchells aren't people you would choose to be your relatives. I hope her father comes round to the idea of Billy, because he's a nice guy. Looking around the square, he's sure to see that she could do a lot worse.

Alright so EE has had some pretty dull and lifeless characters in the past The Ferrairs and others, and I still have not warmed to Naomi and doubt I will. It takes alot for a character to have such a big impact on the viewer but I have fallen in love with Jack Edwards. The thought of Honey's father appearing in the show had little enthusiasm from me but after Monday's episode I realised just what potential this man has. He's full of himself and sarcastic but wonderfully funny and warm thanks mainly to the assured acting of Nicky Henson. Nicky Henson has such a glint in his eye you cant help but like him, he's cheeky and a proper jack the lad who bounces of Barbara Windsor and Perry Fenwick beautifully.

I think Eastenders has found the perfect man for Peggy who can provide some much needed humour to the square. After the introduction of the lovely Bradley and the witty Kevin Wicks Eastenders have finally found some great characters and Jack has to be the finest I hope he's in the square for sometime, it would have been interesting too see David Essex in the role but Nicky Henson is perfect for the role. What do you guys think?

Jack is great! :D At first I thought hmm, is he going to be a dull dad who protects his daughter... but I loved him! He's funny and I can denfinately see something between him and Peggy, they'd make the perfect couple! :wub:

I too Johnny Allen, am loving Jack Edwards. Unlike the majority of the cast Nicky Henson is a fantastic actor, with a renowned career behind him. Jack is not the usual two dimensial character, he has depth and great potential on a show like Eastenders, lets hope that they make the most of him.

His humour will be a great asset to the show and i can only see good things coming from this character. I love how he is going to be linked to the main family: the mitchells, as it is going to be there year for obvious reasons, as you say he works well with babs and perry, and its about time Peggy found herself a man, and Jack seems the be the pefect contender for the mitchell matriach's heart.

I really like him. I was thinking earlier how he's a really good character when I was watching the omnibus. I actually enjoyed the scenes with him in last week. And him and Peggy together were great to watch. They make a really funny pair. I think he'll go quite far in the show, I hope so anyway. :)

3 signs of whether a character is permanant

1) they have a castcard
2) they are on the characters list on the website
3) they are announced on the eastenders new section

Jack fits all 3, so yes i am pleased to say he is permanant

I think they chose well, Jack and Peggy have just the right amount of chemisty without being OTT..I certainly hope he is around for a long time. Will be interesting to see how Phil and Grant size him up .. :D

BRAVE EastEnders star Nicky Henson is battling cancer, The Sun can reveal.

He thought he had beaten the disease after surgery three years ago — but it returned.

Nicky, 60, who plays landscape gardener Jack Edwards in the BBC soap, said last night: “Nothing quite prepares you for this situation.”

Surgeons removed life-threatening tumours from around his spleen in 2003.

Then a routine check showed others had grown and it would be dangerous to remove them.

Instead, Nicky was put on a gruelling course of chemotherapy, involving the use of a groundbreaking new drug.

Now he faces a tense few weeks as he waits to see if it has shrunk the tumours enough to let surgeons operate.

The actor, who appears in George Clooney’s new movie thriller Syriana, said the cast and production chiefs on EastEnders had been supportive throughout.

Nicky, remembered as a randy guest in TV’s Fawlty Towers, said: “It’s been great.

“Because I have been ill they gave me a room of my own to rest in and I stay near the studios instead of facing a long drive home.”

yeah exactly! i can't stand Bert! He really annoys me! i can't understand what hes saying half the time! I like Jack though!
