Green Day are to take some time off following a hectic year of touring and promoting.
The group wrapped 2005 with two concerts in Australia before officially calling an end to their 'American Idiot' era.
"It was a crazy year, but it's been the best year of our career," frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told Billboard. "It's going to be kind of sad for it to end, but, you know, we don't have any regrets."
"Discussions" about new material will begin in January but it could be some time before the final product hits the shelves.
Armstrong added: "We'll start with silence, and that's how we'll be able to find the inspiration to find another record."
