SHAMED Michael Barrymore is terrified he will face angry protests when he returns to Britain this week to appear on Celebrity Big Brother, The Sun can reveal.
The fallen star, an outcast since a male guest at his house died with horrific sexual injuries, is insisting on spending as little time here as possible.
Gay Barrymore, 53, will DELAY flying in to join the other housemates until the last moment. SECURITY at the house will be beefed up. And Channel 4 bosses have agreed he can SCUTTLE back to New Zealand where he now lives the moment he is voted off the show.
As the furious reaction to his £150,000 deal grew last night, a source said: “Michael accepted the Big Brother proposal because he needs cash.
“But he is absolutely terrified of the reception he faces in England and plans to stay in New Zealand until the very last moment.
“And the second he is booted out he plans to get the first jet back.”
Channel 4 signed up the skint former Strike It Lucky host last week after dropping Boy George, who was arrested in America for allegedly possessing cocaine.
Barrymore is desperate for cash after a £1.4million tax bill left him bankrupt.
His career stalled and he started a new life in New Zealand after Stuart Lubbock, 31, drowned in the pool at his Essex home during a drink and drugs party in 2001. Stuart was found to have severe anal injuries.
His dad Terry blasted as “sick” the move to put Barrymore on Celeb Big Brother — starting on Thursday. He said: “How dare Channel 4 let him make a comeback.
“I have been trying to get answers about what happened to my son for years but Barrymore has refused to say anything.”
And on the website Digital Spy, which is devoted to Big Brother, fan Jo wrote: “They could lose a lot of viewers. I had hoped never to see that arrogant sleazeball again.”
Barrymore was unavailable last night.
