http://images.digitalspy.co.uk/soaps/eastenders/160x120_eastenders_20051225_katalfie.jpgA festive visit to Albert Square helped the BBC win the Christmas Day ratings war yesterday, according to overnight figures.

BBC One took seven of the day's top ten spots, led by 10.12 million viewers - a 44% share of the TV audience - for a 60-minute EastEnders in the 9pm hour.

ITV1's peak came for Coronation Street, which pulled in 9.41 million (41.2%) from 8pm. A celebrity edition of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? featuring Terry Wogan in the hotseat also fared well, drawing 6.31 million (28.7%) from 7pm to finish seventh place overall. The Booze Cruise 2: The Treasure Hunt averaged just 4.13 million (18.6%) between 9pm and 10.50pm.

The BBC's other successes included David Tennant's first outing as Doctor Who at 7pm (9.4 million, 42.7%), Ronnie Barker's final TV appearance in The Two Ronnies Christmas Sketchbook at 10pm (7.93 million, 38.3%) and the movie presentations of Shrek (6.69 million, 47.5%) and Toy Story 2 (6.48 million, 40.4%).

The Queen's speech managed a total audience of almost 8 million viewers at 3pm, including 6.18 million (45.6%) on BBC One and 1.7 million (12.6%) on ITV1.

BBC Two put up a strong showing in primetime, averaging 2.85 million (12.4%) for a new, all-star adaptation of The Importance of Being Earnest between 8pm and 9.30pm. Channel 4 had just 489,000 (2.1%) for the two-hour doco Tsunami: Where Was God? from 7.50pm but rose to 1.31 million (8.5%) for Tom Cruise's Jerry Maguire at 10pm. Five also had a good night, starting with 1.46 million (6.4%) for a repeat of the two-hour Greatest TV Comedy Moments at 8pm before dopping slightly to 1.37 million (7.6%) for National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

A Little Britain-themed night helped BBC Three to victory in multichannel homes with an average of 547,000 (3.8%) between 9pm and midnight. Sky One's four-hour Simpsons marathon averaged 408,000 (2.7%) from 5pm.

Other strong performers included the premiere of Shrek 2 on Sky Movies, with a total of 1.12 million viewers across the day, and E4's Lost premiere (378,000, 2.2%).

Personally I thought it was a terrible episode. I think the last 3 xmas day episodes have been very poor imo. I've forgotten what 2002 was about but I remember 2001 was brilliant. Sadly last night was very poor (see my repsonse on episode discussion thread). I thought Corrie was miles better last night than EE.

They probably 'won' because they had 2 big characters leaving, whilst Corrie, though they had some interesting storylines, had nothing really much going on. The EE episode had a bit more publicity as well on TV, so I'm not surprised they did the best out of the big three. EE is also still seen as the xmas day soap, whereas Corrie never used to have xmas day episodes until recently (unless they fell on a Monday, Wednesday and (in the 90s) a Friday). I expect that also counts towards the result.

BBC1 also had a strong line-up as ever for xmas day, whereas ITV was weak as ever. That helped.

What I was surprised about though was how low these ratings are for all of them, as xmas day normally adds quite a few extra viewers. The ratings last night were even lower than a normal episode. Unthinkable!

Im surprised that EE's core audience were allowed up so late to watch it. Still its the school holidays.
Considering the episode was allegedly written by the so called dream team it was pretty poor

It is a lot but as Richie says all the 3 soaps have disappointing figures for this Christmas which is generally when they all and especially EE usually have fantastic figures :)

Both Corrie and EE were 2m down on last year's xmas day audiences. Their totals were less than they would be for a normal episode!

no suprrises there! eastenders deserved that! other than the baldwins, corrie was TOTALLY RUBBISH, there is nothing going on in that show at the moment... so it dosent deserve top ratings.

Yeah, the only bit that was any good in corrie was the bit with Cilla in.

i have to disagree if anything i enjoyed the baldwin parts at the clock, they are the only intresting characters in the show!

the cilla sketch just proved why i hate corrie: its too much comedy orientated, i watch soaps for drama not for cheap corny jokes!

It wasn't the best bit of comedy you'll see on Corrie by any means, and much of the so-called comedy stuff on it over the Summer was absolutely dire on the whole, e.g. carp (swap the second and third letters round for that one!). When Corrie does do comedy like it would normally, I think it's very good, e.g. the sarky one-liners. I should point out as an observation that comedy is much harder to write into a soap than drama on the whole, and that's a fact (before you ask that isn't a dig at other soaps, just an observation). :)

Hope you all had a nice xmas. :)
