Breaking news at this odd time of day. (http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2005590631,00.html)
What a shame if true. That would be a huge loss. :(

Fabulous News! :cheer: There's far too many comedy characters in Coronation Street, and the sooner most of them go, the better! :)

I will be sorry to see him go. I find his character more sad than comedic. You cannot help but feel sorry for Fred
Coronation Street star John Savident is considering quitting the show.
The actor, who plays butcher Fred Elliott, has apparently told close friends that he does not wish to sign a new contract next year.
"John is telling everyone he is becoming rather fed up," one source told The Mirror. "People think John is just like Fred in real life but they couldn't be more wrong. He is a classical actor and he says he is missing the stage and theatre terribly.
"He has been a massive hit, bringing back the humour with his repetitive phrases and clumsy philandering. The viewers love him but from the way he is talking 2006 could well be his last year with the soap."
Another insider added, "It won't be an easy decision for him because he has enjoyed himself over the years."
The rumours follow reports from last weekend that Johnny Briggs, better known as Mike Baldwin on the soap, will be leaving next year.
hes leaving? i say i say hes leaving? all the good characters are going...i say i say...

good luck to him.
But who will buy the Rovers off him, Cause Shelly is leaving and Sean is only going to be made manager.
Maybe Betty might buy the pub, but i doubt she will.

I don't think Sean could afford to buy the pub, and I don't think Betty would want it. Mike Baldwin is the obvious choice, but as he's leaving as well, it won't be him.
Maybe Dev could buy it. I heard a while ago he was leaving, I'm not sure if he is now. Or there's Steve, or maybe Lloyd. I'm trying to think of people who currently own businesses.
I suppose they may want Jack and Vera back in there again. They were good.

All I can say is good riddance. The actor fab the character just gets on my nerves!

it would be perfect to introudce a new family, or couple, to be at the centre of all the action and spice up the show a bit.

I'd be sorry to see John Savident go. He is a good actor and brings a lot of humour - and sometimes pathos - to the part.
As for who will buy the Rovers why does it have to be someone already in Coronation Street? A new family would be good.

That's why I said 'maybe not'.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who found Bet Lynch highly overated. The stories I could tell you from friends who have seen this primadonna in public would beggar belief.
Happy Christmas everyone! :)
P.S. It's not confirmed that Fred's leaving as there are no quotes from the actor himself, but it could well still be true.
If Fred goes, I can't see much of a future in Weatherfield for Mr Squeaky and Clurr.

Don't kow if anyone else saw gmtv this morning but Fred Elliott exit will be shown in six weeks time and it has been confirmed that he will die. The spoiler came out during the review of the telly programmes with Richard Arnold. Richard had reported that Rod Hull who plays the undertaker in Corrie had taken a funny turn during filming the funeral scene on Friday but he is fine now.

Dont you mean Roy Hudd, Kath - Rod Hull was that "great" comic more associated with Emu and falling off a rooftop whilst adjusting his tv aerial wasn't he?! :ninja:

Yes that's the right one! He had the Emu who attacked Parky!
Sad to hear Fred is to die. He will be sorely missed I say he will be sorely missed.

Its a shame John Savident is leaving, but the time comes for everyone to move on after a while

 sorry I meant to say Roy Hudd. I read on DS that John Savident who plays Fred had to get out of the coffin to help Roy when he took ill as they thought he was suffering from a heart attack, but it turned out to be just a chest infection.
fred's death will be one of the worst in soap history for me, ive always loved fred and imagined he'd be there forever, he just makes Corrie for me, he may not be the most featured character but he seemed to be the glue. Street life will never be the same without the chubby butcher again! I say I say... :rotfl:

I still can't believe that Fred is leaving as well as being killed off, i will really miss him not being in the show...i always believed that he shouldn't be killed off and that he and Bev should get married and they leave for a happy retirement.

Fred should have been allowed a happy ending with the odd guest appearence

I think they did this for a reason though. Fred's always been a bit of an unlucky character when it comes down to happiness and it was a bit obvious that something tragic like this would be his exit. I agree that a 'lived happily ever after' ending would have been nice but realistically that's never what Fred's been about is it.

Coronation Street will say a tearful farewell to loudmouthed butcher Fred Elliott next week when he tragically dies on his wedding day.
The soap favourite played by actor John Savident is seen lying in a coffin on the day he is set to wed fiancee Bev Unwin, played by Susie Blake.
The dramatic twist is the culmination of a difficult period for Fred who finds himself struggling to come to terms with his feelings for Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls) after she reveals that she still loves him.
Audrey, who turned down his proposal of marriage years ago, has now said she would happily agree to be his wife, leaving Fred not knowing which way to turn.
Savident announced his decision to leave the soap last December for "personal reasons" having joined in August 1994. He suffered a personal attack in his home a few years ago which forced him to miss key episodes of the series.
His last appearance in the long-running show will be screened on ITV1 on October 9.
