The Sopranos' Lillo Brancato Jr. has been arrested after the fatal shooting of a New York policeman.

Off-duty officer Daniel Enchautegui, 28, investigated after noticing Brancato and one accomplice apparently breaking into an empty house.

As he entered the property, an onlooker heard a shout of "Police! Don't move!" followed by gunfire. The policeman collapsed and died shortly after.

Brancato and Steven Armento – who, police say, shot the officer – were arrested running from the scene. Both were shot themselves and are in critical and serious conditions respectively.

"This is a loss to the department and the city," said the city's Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "We now have another life to mourn, taken from us for no sensible reason."

As well as playing aspiring gangster Matt Bevilacqua in the cult show, 29-year-old Brancato also starred in Robert De Niro's A Bronx Tale.
