Guilty as charged

How I wish I could surrender my soul
Shed my clothes that become my skin
See the liar that burns within my needing

Chrissie stood in the dock, the wooden box no better than a cell. She stood tall in her conservative fitted black suit and white and pink striped shirt. Her hair carefully pulled back from her face at the temples and her make up neutral to complete her sober look. She remembered being at the airport with Jake and turning round to see Sharon facing her. She knew then her sharde was over and knew her lies were finally over on a sigh of relief.

I’ve heard what they say, but I’m not here for trouble
It’s more that just words: it’s just tears and rain

Jake entered the small court room through tall wooden double doors, walking through to take a seat in the middle of an empty row. Today seats were nearly full. He recognised most of the faces staring back at him smugly; nearly the whole square had turned out for the verdict. He spotted Phil and Peggy sitting two rows behind him and holding his head high he turned to meet Chrissie’s eyes. Eyes where tears had fallen from less than two hours ago as she’d told him to move on, to carry on with his life, to let her go. She smiled at him now and his flashed back in response, he loved her, this woman was his.

How I wish I could walk through the of my mind
Hold memory close at hand
Help me understand the years

Chrissie stood half listening to the judge’s speech. She’d gone back in time in her mind, gone back to that night in February that had made her what she was, a murderer. The night of February 17th, she’d been planning this for weeks, she’d finally get her revenge, she’d make him hurt as much as he’d made her hurt. This would be his judgement day and only she known how true that really was. A single tear slipped unnoticed down her cheek as she remembered the moment Sharon had stepped forward and Den had known hurt, pain and betrayal. But she hadn’t wanted to kill him, to hurt him to humiliate him but underneath it all she was doing it because she loved him deeply. How had he made her what she was now?

How I wish I’d chosen darkness from cold
How I wish I had screamed out loud
Instead I’ve found no meaning

Jake watched the tear roll softly down Chrissie’s cheek and knew she hadn’t noticed it. She wasn’t listening to the judge’s words, but somewhere else in her head. He looked at her dark shocked eyes and knew she was reliving the night she’d killed Den, knew she was remembering everything. He’d lived through it with her countless times before, he’d lived it through her nightmares, soothing her in the night, comforting her in his arms, telling her everything would be all right, that they’d find a way. He turned his head to look down at his sleeping daughter, she had her mother’s curls and temper but she had his eyes. It was her first birthday tomorrow and she’d have to celebrate it and countless others with out her mother, the one person who loved her as much as he did, with out Chrissie.

How I wish I could chose between heaven and hell
How I wish I could save my soul
I’m so cold from fear

Chrissie opened her eyes and looked around the room full of faces. She saw Sharon and Dennis sitting together hand in hand and she smiled as she saw Sharon’s growing bump. Jake had told her they’d had successful IVF treatment and expected their first child in three months time. Chrissie remembered the feeling when she found out she was pregnant, the over whelming joy and despair. She’d told Jake the following day when he’d visited her, he was completely over the moon too. She had her ray of hope she knew, sleeping in her father’s arms only a few feet away. But she was scared, not only of what she would face day after day, year after year. But what her daughter would face growing up with out her, with knowing what her mother had done. She looked up at the judge when he addressed her with all the fear she felt showing in her eyes, pleading with him.
‘Chrissie Watts for all your crimes including the murder of Dennis Watts on February 17th 2005, I hear by find you guilty and sentence you to no less than eleven years in prison. You must serve all of those eleven years in prison. When your sentence is up your release will be revised and considered.’
Chrissie shut her eyes in disbelief and defeat and her tears fell freely from her eyes down her pale cheeks. She heard her name called and opening her eyes saw Jake standing watching her with their daughter in his arms and tears running down his own face.
‘I’m scared Jake’
‘I love you’
Chrissie nodded at his words and wiped away her tears ‘I love you’ was all she managed to say before she was turned around placed in handcuffs and lead away from the court room and Jake.
