View Full Version : Whose Celebrating?
As we're discovered in another thread, not many people on here are religous, and even less are christians. So i thought it would be interesting to see if most of the board AREN'T celebrating Christmas, as it is the Christian celebration of the birth of Christ.

jahovas witnesses dont believe in anything do they?
well actually it isn't officially the birth of christ - historians have discovered that jesus (if he ctually exsisted that is) was actuly born round bout september time.
i ont think it matters if you are religious or not to celebrate xmas. the ctully tradition for giving presents was started by a man now called saint nick leaving food for poor famillies on this certin night of the year.
We celebrate christmas, but not the religious side of it. My family don't believe in God.

I completly get your point. And its very good.
True its not the actually birth of christ, but its still a celebration of his life, and his birth (even if it wasn't then)
The whole Saint Nick thing is a good point as well. No body ever seems to remember that though!

I am celebrating both elements of christmas. I have the tree and decorations and pressies and food as marley still believes in santa. But I also celebrate the birth of Christ by having a nativity display on the coffee table and going to mass
i will be celebrating chrisatmas but we dont go out of our way to teach con what it symbolises, his preschool do as its a church preschool but we wouldnt push it on him

Thats what i'm like, and i think thats what Christmas is all about.
Of course, i love giving and getting pressies, but we have a nativity set, i run a nativity with my youth group, we go to various services and things like that. Christmas is about a mixture.
i just find it very ironic that people put down Christianity and religion, but dont hesitate to celebrate Christmas. I bet 90% of people do it without even realising it.

christmas is firstly about remembering Christ's birth, hence the name CHRISTmas, but that is all forgotten these days. Christmas is a Christian celebration so i find it hard to imagine why people celebrate it when they want nothing to do with God.

but as others have said, its also linked with a pagan festival and saint nick giving food to the poor and things, so its not just about jesus
At the end of hte day, its all very ironic. Christmas IS a christian celebration of god, whether it was Jesus's birth or not. Christmas is ALL about God. British people now a days always seem to put down the idea of God, yet dont hesitate to celebrate him at Christmas. Christmas has now become a tacky tinsel festival, which everyone, of all religons celebrate. I bet you dont celebrate Japanese festivals because you probably wont beleive in it. So why celebrate Christmas fesitival? Its so stupid. People now a days seem to think presents, tinsel, trees and tacky things like that it what Christmas is all about. Well its not, and if you think it is, then you obviously need to goback to pre-school and learn about the true meaning of Christmas.
Rant over!
but as others have said, its also linked with a pagan festival and saint nick giving food to the poor and things, so its not just about jesus
So i take it you'll be celebrating the "true" meaning of Christmas by buying and giving presents to poor children, and not to your family and friends who dont need it. If Christmas is about celebrating St Nick, then you wont be getting any presents yourself will you? All your money will be spent on poor children wont it? you ont have any decorations? you'll dedicate the whole Christmas season by devoting your time and energy to poor children like he did wont you?
Some how i doubt you will

well we do the shoebox appeal at school, and my mum doesnt give xmas cards at her work but instead gives the money she would have spent to charity. you may well be celebrating in the religious sense but i bet youll be giving pressies too and decorations, they dont link with jesus so why will you be giving them?

They do actually, ever heard of the 3 wise men? and what did they come bearing.....?
and did you know that paganism is one of the most religous organisations in the world, and take their teachings from alots of other religons (INCLUDING Christianity), so if your celebrating the pagan holiday, technically speaking, you are still celebrating the birth of Christ, simply with other influences, such as Greek and Roman religions included. So Christmas and Yule (the pagan holiday) are actually pretty much the same.

we celebrate it but we aren't religious although we respect the religious side of it and I think its important to remember that without the religious side we wouldnt have christmas at all but then again I cant really get away from the religion bit I go to a catholic school lol :)

exactly what i think.........................
Its all celebrating the Christmas Story, and God in essence. Plus its also part of the "beloved" pagan holiday, which everyone seems to think so highly of.

how come then that you said to me that i couldnt get or receive pressies cos saint nick gave them to poor people, but you can get pressies even though the wise men only gave pressies to one baby?
what i'm saying is that you said your celebrating saint Nick. Well he didn't receive presents, so if your celebrating him, then teachnically you shouldn't either. If your going back on what you said, and now are saying your celebrating the Pagan holiday, well then its a different matter.
Most christian festivals have their origins in paganism.... I will be celebrating christmas but can't go to mass as I am in Germany and don't speak the language....
Will have the whole Santa thing for the kids
