DC Jo Masters (Sally Rogers) works on a case of a possible racially motivated assault with DC Suzie Sim (Wendy Kweh). The white victim, Kevin Barnes, has been found in the street with a serious head wound. Following the attack, Kevin’s friend, Ed Stanton (Guy Lankester), shouts racist abuse at the predominately Asian onlookers – he claims that they walked away from a confrontation with some Asian lads earlier that evening. Stanton blames Aftab Bashar (Amit Arroz) for the attack and lunges at him in the crowd resulting in them both being arrested. However, when a minicab driver, Massoud Brahini (Jack Raymond), comes forward saying he witnessed a woman, Lisa Keller (Kate Miles), standing over the victim, the case takes an unexpected turn…

Meanwhile, Sergeant Dale Smith (Alex Walkinshaw) and PC Leela Kapoor (Seema Bowri) become involved in a domestic dispute when a man breaks down the door to his ex-wife’s house. The estranged husband, Brian Alderton (Fergus O’Donnell), claims that his ex, Eve (Sara West), won’t allow him to deliver Christmas presents to his children even though it’s his access day.

Elsewhere, PC Amber Johannsen (Myfanwy Waring) continues to struggle under Inspector Gina Gold’s (Roberta Taylor) watchful eye and yet again fails to live up to expectations. Gina tells Amber that she’s not her idea of a good officer and she wants to see an improvement in her performance or else…

Smithy is surprised when Louise Larson (Rosie Marcel) turns up out of the blue to see him at work. Unable to deal with his raging emotions, he sends her away saying that he doesn’t want to be messed around again. However, Smithy is amazed when he later discovers that Louise is going into witness protection – she’s testifying against her husband, Pete. When they meet up again, Louise asks Smithy if he’d consider changing his identity too so they could start afresh as a couple. Will Smithy contemplate leaving Sun Hill to be with the woman he loves?...

When it’s discovered that she’s also been receiving threatening letters, it initially looks like her controlling ex-boyfriend, Sean Burrows (Alexander Hanson), is behind the attack in an attempt to scare her. However, further investigation reveals that Ellie’s landlady, Joanne Marsden (Alison McKenna), has a few enemies herself and the assault may be a case of mistaken identity.

Smithy looks into who might want to harm Joanne and it leads him to a building company - she refused to pay for some building work causing the company to go bust and the owner to commit suicide. Smithy speaks to the widow, Ruth Tranter (Denise Black), and discovers that her angry bereaved son, Ryan (Freddy White), who’s gone missing, may be the attacker. The situation comes to a head when Joanne also goes disappears and Smithy is involved dramatic struggle with Ryan at the top of a bridge…
