According to Digital Spy and ITV teletext Page 132 over 240 complaints were made about Tuesdays episode of Eastenders

The episode attracted well over 10 million viewers but some viewers found some of the scenes too violent  including Phil Mitchell played by Steve McFadden punching and head flushing Ian Beale

The BBC have apologised and insisted the episode was carefully gauged

that's a load of the rubbish, ALL the scenes were brilliant, i didn't want Phil to come back but i found myself on the edge of my seat screaming at the tv 'go the other way' 'run Phil'

well done EE i've not been that into a storyline since Den and Andy's death, it was absolutly brill

We know that but some viewers must be of a nervous dispostion and it's not like they weren't warned about the violence I guess the fact that Phil was back was not enough warning for them

I say if they dont like it why watch it and then complain, they should just turn it off if they dont like it,in my opinion it was the best episode since christmas day,it beats all the boring drivel weve had just latley,a bit of action and they start complaining, well i suppose EE could show the these sort of episodes after the watershed then they could really pep them up,that would get everyone talking once again.

I agree with you if I don't like something I turn it off so use your remote if you don't people complaining their kids will see it well the kids should be in bed

It was one of best episodes this year so far and I hope it carries on

Well I think we must remeber that this was pre-watershed and I don't think many of us knew it was going to be 'that' violent! I know it wasn't but others may to percieve it have been.

And to say then don't watch it well, thats ludicrous as these 'complainers' are not saying they didn't like the soap nor that it was wasn't bad epiosde they're simpily saying they believed the levels of violence were too high.

Please try to distinguish between all 3 elements :)

I can't understand why they would complain??? I bet they are the same people who laughed the first time they seen Ian with him head been flushed down the toilet and did EE get complaints over the Den's and Andy's death scenes?

I don't think it was that volient at all

Although I agree that I don't think the episode was too violent, I do think JSW has a good point. It's no good just saying to people, "switch off if you don't like it." They might be avid fans of Eastenders and watch it every week; why should they have to switch off if an episode is too violent? The producer and script writers should make sure the programme stays within the bounds of what is acceptable. As I say, in this case I think they did, but JSW's general argument still holds good.

It's not what I'd class as violent and to be honest with you I think that today's cartoons are far more violent. Ian's head has been flushed down the toilet twice before and no one complained then, also there has been far more violence in the past in EE. (No complaints) People have to remember that this is a soap based in the Eastend of London. There is violence around us every single day and the type we see on the streets and even in schools these days is far worse than any shown on EE.

What about Corrie? No complaints there only ratings.

Well said and yes that would work well moving EE a later time and yes pepping it up with more action/drama. That is when Eastenders or any Drama etc is at it's best.

my little boy was in the roomwhen i was watching it and he was really scared!! he told me that the man was nasty and the police take him away!! i took him into the bedroom to sit with daddy and then let him back in when phil was arrested!! he got up early hours crying and slept in our bed coz of the nasty man!!! bless him!!

i wouldnt complain though he gets scared when dora the exploreer has a witch in it!!!

i dont think it was bad enough to complain about!! it was part of the story and phil had to be that nasty

I didn't think it was that violent but in a way it could easily give people an new idea of a way to bully some one not as strong as themselves. Phil shoving Ians head down the loo would probably have frightened some younger viewers more than if he just punched him. The thought of someone holding my head down the loo is worse than the prospect of being punched.
I do think complaining is going a bit far though.

I wouldn't have complained about it, nothing you can do about it once its been shown - I wasn't that impressed with it, the flushing Ian's head in the toilet was just school bully stuff, boring and been done before and the punch up outside the Vic (I think it was there anyway) with the police was just recreating the time Grant did it, except Grant's was much better. I'm not looking forward to Phil coming back (can you tell!). :hmm:
