View Full Version : awwwww i want a hamster!
took connor to a pet shop the other day to look at fish for my dad xmas pressie and whilst looking at the sweet little rabbits me and connor fell in love with a hamster! he was so sweet beige and white coloured. Connor loved him and i think it really good for children to have a pet in the house. i said to dave that he could get it and all the bits as a joint very ealry present for our birthdays but the miserable old man has said no. i really want to get him!
anyone had a hamster? are they a good pet to have, do they smell( dave says they stink!!!) and do they escape all the time?( another reason to not get one apparently!!)
do they get ill a lot just loads of info is what im looking for to help me decide wether to bother buying him or not.

we got a hamster in early september and she is very cute!!! we have not managed to tame her at all though as we got her for a large pet store and we have been told they are not picked up every day like at a local small pet shop. it is prob too late for us to tame her now, so i would advise you go to a local pet shop and ask if the hamster has be handled frequently. when we get her out of the cage we get her out in the big ball we have for her and put her in the same way. she has never escaped. we clean out once a week and she doesnt smell. although its too late for us to tame her now we still think she's lovely. dont get a fancy over the top cage, a basic one will do as the more tubes there are the more there are to pull apart every week and clean!!
Ive had loads of hamsters. They are lovely aminals to have. Great for kids. They do smell a bit but that only if your used to having sawdust in the house. Mines eacaped regularly but there a trick to catching them. Once one of mine went missing for weeks and the guy in the flat downstairs found him in his cupboard eating his clothes and making a nest.
They sleep all day but can make a racket at night if they arent getting enough exercise.
Ive only had one hamster that was ill and that was because of an infection and it cost me £15 to get him put down
All in all i would reccomend them for a first pet.
need to know anything else just ask :D

i think this hamster might have gone by the time i go back but i know a little shop that sells gorgoues hamsters we went there as well on sunday.they are long haired hamsters?
i hvae seen a fab cage with a plastic house and wheel and a big twisty pipe thats the one i really want im not worried but lots of cleaning. Connor has chosen a bowl and water bottle, we have to have blue as the hamster has to be a boy ( connor says) and we also saw some things that they nibble on in the shape of ice creams!
me and connor are disaggreeing over a name he wants to call it sportacus and i want to call it chubby cheekster!
Handling them takes a wihile to master first youve got to get them to trust you then youve got to trust yourself with them cause if you accidently drop them they are off like a shot (every hamsters main aim in its short life to to be free and they will try anything)
When/if you bring them home leave him for a few hours to get over the journey home then slowly over the next few weeks handle him more and more. for the first week or so watch out for them biting you (trust me it hurts)
The balls are fine for them (although they can learn to break and crack them so watch out for that) they also love having a wheel in the cage it does them good.

i've had a few hamsters. One of my hamsters maaged to to climb up the bars of the cage during the night and get's it's teeth stuck. It somehow managed to break it's jaw and died from it. I was about 8 at the time and really upset. Hamsters are good pets though. Just watch out for them climbing the cage

ive never had a hamster as the cats would eat it! i nearly killed my friends sisters hamster though (i didnt mean to!), i was sitting on one of those high bar stools and tyhe hamster was on my shoulder and it fell off! it was ok but i was apologising for weeks!
I really want a hamster, but my mum keeps making excuses about why I can't have one. Holidays, vets bills etc. Can people give me some good points to having one to convince my mum

tamzi, try promising your mum you will do all the cleaning out and she will never have to get involved. they are really low maintenance to look after and very cute. we relented and let my daughter get one and i have probably bonded with it the most. i talk to it and give it treats all the time!!
she is very cute and called nala (from lion king 2). the dwarf hamsters are small and cute but mostly will never be tamed. the syberian ones are larger but can be very tame and toilet trained too!!
