View Full Version : 'Enders actor speaks of meningitis scare
EastEnders star Joe Swash has spoken about being struck down by meningitis.
The actor, who plays Mickey Miller on the soap, was rushed (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds24894.html) to hospital at the beginning of last month after falling seriously ill while visiting relatives.
"I was certain I'd die," Joe told the News of the World. "My head hurt so much I wanted the nurses to cut it off."
"I knew something was wrong and it could kill me," he explained. "I was sure I'd suffered a stroke because my body was numb. Then the headaches started and I thought it was something much worse. I've never felt pain like it.
"I couldn't feel the left side of my body. It was numb. I tried wiggling my toes and my legs. My arm felt like it was sagging, almost hanging off my body. Then I tried to move my mouth and felt sheer terror come over me - I couldn't move my lips.
"Because of the numbness my first thought was that I'd had a stroke. My second thought was that I couldn't work again.
"I've spent half my life trying to be an actor and I work on a show that I love. I felt it had all slipped away because I'd now lost the most important thing you need to be an actor - the ability to talk. It was terrifying. I've never been that scared before."
Fortunately, Joe has now been given the all-clear by doctors and is returning to work on November 14. The actor will be back on screens by January.

You've all confused me. This is about the illness of Joe swash who plays Mickey Miller.
Glad he's ok. That would completly terrify me if i were him and had those symptums! Suppose thats why we havnt seen much of Demi or Mickey on our screens. Id forgotton about him being rushed to hospital. At least he is well now and returning back to work soon.

what is meningitis. Its a very dangerous illness, that can be bacterial or viral, causes inflammation of the lining of the brain, blood poisoning and if not caught early enough, can be fatal - my youngest had bacterial when he was 7 months old and was luckily fine, but it can also cause other problems, like limb amputation, deafness, blindness. There is a vaccine for the C strain, but not B strain and this is the one that tends to be more fatal. Viral meningitus is like all other virus' - you cannot treat it, but it tends to be less severe.....
Hope that helps Tig's :D

oh no- no wonder everyone got:confused:
I am so happy joe is ok. Meningitis is a horrible complaint, I had Menigicockle which is type B when I was 8 years old, I was in hospital for 6 months, I was left with no speech or hearing for 2 years, but luckily I got both back. I now have very sensitive hearing, I can often hear high pitched sounds others can not hear. I am so lucky to get my hearing and speech back.I know of a girl that was in hospital with me at the time had to have both legs amputated. If my dad hadn't of acted so quick and got me to hospital I wouldn't be here today.
Things to watch out for a very bad cold/flu like systoms
Pain down the spine when you bend your head
unable to look at bright light
weakness in your limbs
high fever (mine was 110 should be 97.5)
being sick constainly
A rash all over the body red/purple blotches when pressed with a glasss do not disappear, Not very one gets the rash though. I didn't.

ive had the jabs for that though - can you still get it?
ive had the jabs for that though - can you still get it? The jab only protects you from the c virus, not the B virus, unforetuneately the B virus type is the worst form,

No it is not blood poisening. The bacteria or virus infects your brain and causes the end of the nerves to break sown, the body gets overheated as well.
terrifying!!

terrifying!!:eek:It can cause blood poisoning though - my youngest had sceptacemic meningitis when he was 7 months old and its this side of it that can end up requiring amputations etc.. full explanations of meningitis have been posted already in the thread....:)
