what do you give a 4 month old baby with a bad head cold.. Ben's nose is all blocked up and he has a bit of a cough.. I have put Karvol on a old sheet and keep it beside him to clear his nose but what can I give him for the cough???

My only suggestion would be calpol and to put a pillow underneath the head of his cot to tilt it slightly - this will help the mucus drain down, rather than sit on his chest causing the cough. Infant cough medicines never work and most of the time, they cough to clear the mucus off of their chests etc, so this does help a little bit...

never thought of using a pillow... I normally take him into my bed when he has his feed at 4 ish... and he sleeps well.. I will get a pillow for him to use in his cot... Thank you again..

Giving him capol as poor pet is also getting his teeth and I am not surprised about the cold.. my daughter has one and she is all over him so he was bound to catch it

Thats what I did with the boys, it can be fun sometimes as they tend to slide down their mattress during the night like its a slide coz of the pillow underneath, but it seems to work.... :D

I thought that young babies could not have a pillow.

i was always told not to just in case pillow ends up on their heads in night so i used to put connors under the cot sheet when he had a cold!

I thought that young babies could not have a pillow. As I said in my first post - a pillow under the mattress to lift the mattress head up - definitely not a pillow directly under the baby's head. Pillows and duvets shouldnt be used prior to one year old minimum

another idea is to put thin books below the legs of the cot at the head end - this helps with the "sliding down the bed" problem - you can buy feet that fit onto cot legs for this purpose but a toddlers board book - or a plank off wood works well (PLEASE be careful that the cot is steady if you do this)

Karvol do a plug in vaporisor that works fantastically well - same idea as the oil but fills the whole room with smelly stuff

Hoping your little one feels better soon

thanks.. I am sure he will be fine.. as for using Karvol vaporisor.. not a chance, I still have him in my room and I can't stand the smell of that stuff

Vicks stuff... you know put in a bowl.. 2 dollops of it in a bowl of slightly cool after boil water...makes the room smell but clears the nose.. good as Karvol.

my hubby hates the smell of it too - I quite like it

another idea is what Spicyspy said too - you can put a bowl of very hot water beside the cot (obviuosly so he can't get at it) with Vicks in it (or olbas oil) and the steam can help loosen off his chest if he is a bit chesty BUT I am guessing that if you don't lile the smell of Karvol then you wont like these either - although a bowl of hot water without anything in it can help loosen up the mucus too

whenever connor has a bad cough that is very mucussy i sit in the bathroom for about twenty minutes which usually calms the cough down a bit and then we have a good nights sleeep.

fill the bath up with hot water and the sink up with boiled water then just sit in teh steanmy room, door closed. works everytime

Em's idea works.. I titled the mattress and he was able to breath a lot better... slept quite well.. still used the Karvol to unblock his nose but it didn't settle in his chest...

Thanks everybody.. will keep the others in mind for future colds and sniffles

Thinking of sending Ben over to you.. you seem to know what to do with babies :D. I never had any problems with Charley as a child, she slept all the time and was never sick... she is an angel compared to Ben.. Boys are so much more hard work :)

Maybe its my boy experience having 2 of them - well, if this turns out to be a girl, I'll be asking your advice lol

Some of it I remember from Ste as he had slight asthma when he was younger, so whenever he had a cold, it went straight on his chest, so I was always tilting the mattress etc - i normally combine it with olbas oil on a tissue on the floor under the bed too.

But if i can think of something that may help someone, I'll always suggest it :D :D

Oh crikey Siobhan - if the colds aren't bad enough, its the teeth - put them together and oh dear....

I was very lucky though - both of my two cut all of their teeth prior to a year old and with no problems at all. One minute they didn't have teeth, the next they had 2 extra!! Just keep your cupboard stocked with calpol. Its just a shame he's not quite old enough for calprofen, which is brill as you can alternate the doses. You can only use it from 6 months though...

I have Calpol and nurofen... he has bad diarea (sp) because of all this too... it never rains but it pours.. maybe this will be the worse of it..

You kinda feel helpless. you know that you have to let it clear by itself but you also know how lousy you feel when you have a cold..

no change but he is not unhappy, still eating and surprisingly putting on weight.... I just don't know what is up with him.. I can only assume it is his teeth...

Its probably got a lot to do with his teeth Siobhan - they tend to get runny etc when their teeth are coming through - loads of bonjela, excellent stuff :D

Thats the main thing - some of them cut their teeth really easy with no real problems or pain (like mine did) and others can't settle because it hurts them sooo much. I'm glad Ben is more the first way though :)

Both Ste and Ci were like that, though as this is no 3, its bound to be the complete opposite of all of that lol

The midwives keep telling me how no 3 is always completely different to the rest lol

Yeah.. still got a slight blocked nose but the diareah (sp?) and coughing has stopped now so he is getting better.. Charley had the cold too and she has been kissing him a lot so I think that is why it is taking so long to go. I have a rule with her now to only kiss him on cheek or forehead
