When Snow Falls // You Found Me - Part 1

I woke up today, I woke up wide awake,
In an empty bed, staring at an empty room,
And I have myself to blame, for the state I'm in today,
And now dying, doesn't seem so cruel.

Chrissie ran up the stairs with tears streaming down her cheeks. She'd lost Jake forever now. She hated herself for losing him. She walked into the kitchen. The candle was still burning on the table. She felt so stupid for ever thinking Jake would forgive her. She threw the table over angrily and ran out and into the bedroom. She slammed the door behind her. Her body ached. Her head ached. Her heart ached for Jake. She fell onto the bed. She cried harder. And with each sob, her body collapsed up and down. Eventually she cried herself to sleep.

Jake was in the kitchen packing his stuff once again. He heard footsteps out in the hall. It was Alfie. He walked into the room rubbing his eyes.
Alfie: What are you doing Jake? I thought you were with Chrissie.
He pulled a chair out and sat down, still rubbing his eyes.
Jake: I'm leaving. I need to be alone for a while.
Alfie: Jake, don't be stupid.
Jake: I'm not being stupid, I mean it. I'm leaving and there's nothing you can do to stop me.

The flame on the candle caught onto the table cloth. The room glowed with flames and the fire got increasingly bigger.

Alfie: You can't leave.
Jake: Why not?
Alfie: Because your girlfriend is pregnant with your child.
Jake: I have no future with Chrissie. She lied to me and I can't forgive her for that.
Alfie: What do you mean you have no future? You're gonna have a family of your own sometime soon, and if that's not a future, I dunno what is.
Jake: She lied to me though and I can't live with that.
He picked up his bags and started to leave. Alfie grabbed his wrist.
Alfie: Just think about what you're throwing away. A family. A child. A lover.

Chrissie woke up coughing and spluttering. The room was full of smoke. She staggered out of bed and opened the door. Flames leapt at her like vicious dogs. She screamed. She found it hard to breathe and fell to her knees. She tried to crawl but she couldn't find the strength. She fell to the floor.
Chrissie: Jake...
She passed out, falling into the darkness.

Jake shook Alfie's hand away and walked out. Jake dropped everything he was carrying when he saw the burning pub.
Jake: Chrissie..

Jake ran over to the Vic.
Jake: CHRISSIE! CHRISSIE!
He knocked down the back door. He ran in and up the stairs. Through the smoke, he could make out a body and he knew it was Chrissie. Her chest was struggling to rise and fall. He scooped her up in his arms and ran. The stairs collapsed behind them as he got them to the floor. He could hardly breathe but he wasn't giving up as he ran out. Just as he got out of the door, there was an explosion from the bar. Jake placed her on the pavement, beside him. She looked so small and lifeless.
Jake: Chrissie, please don't die. I can't live without you.
He stroked her burnt cheeks. The windows exploded and shattered above them. He threw his body over hers, protecting her from any glass that fell. His eyes glistened with tears as he looked down at her limp, lifeless body. She looked so small, so young. He shook her gently.
Jake: Chrissie, come on don't do this. I love you and nothing will ever change that. I love you, ok, I love you.
He closed his eyes as he faced up to the truth. She was gone and she didn't even know that he loved her. He felt someone clutch his hand tightly.
Chrissie: I love you too.
He opened his eyes to see hers staring right up at him. She coughed.
Jake: You're alive! I just dunno what I would've done if you had died.
He hugged her tightly. Snow began to fall from the pitch black sky.
Chrissie: Jake, I'm so sorry I lied--
Tears fell down her face.
Jake: Shhh. I don't care about that. It's alright, ok. We'll be fine.

Sharon ran out of the Fowler's with Dennis following closely behind.
Sharon: Chrissie!
She knelt down beside her.
Sharon: Are you alright babe?
Chrissie: Yeah, yeah I'm fine.
Sharon: Dennis, phone the fire brigade. And call for an ambulance.
Chrissie: Sharon,I'm fine.
She sat up, Jake's arms still around her.
Chrissie: I'm fine, alright. Really I am.
Sharon: Thank god you saved her Jake.
Jake: Well I did what I knew was right.
Chrissie smiled thankfully at Jake.
Chrissie: Sharon, will you give us a moment alone?
Sharon: Well are you sure you're ok?
Chrissie: Yes. I'm positive.
She stood up and walked over to Dennis.
Chrissie: Jake, are you still leaving?
He laughed.
Jake: Chrissie, do you honestly think I'm going to leave you after I saved you from a burning building?
She shrugged.
Jake: Chrissie, I love you. And if you don't believe me now, you might after this..
He kissed her slightly burnt lips. She pulled away.
Chrissie: But it's so wrong.. After what I did.. After I lied to you..
Jake: If it's so wrong, then why does it feel so right? If God didn't want us to be together, why is he giving us these feelings of happiness when we're with each other?
Chrissie: Don't. You might turn into Dot.
She smiled through the tears that fell from her face.
Jake: I'm not going anywhere. I'm staying here with you.
He stood up and held his hand out for her.
Jake: Just trust me.
She took his hand and he pulled her up. He steadied her as she stumbled. There was another explosion from the pub. She turned back realizing how it had happened. Jake saw the look of horror on her face.
Jake: What's the matter?
Chrissie: It was my fault. It was all my fault. I started the fire. I did it.
Jake: What? How? It can't have been your fault.
Chrissie: But it was. When you said you wanted to talk, I thought you wanted to get back together with me so I made us dinner. Stupid, eh?
He shook his head.
Chrissie: Anyway, there was a candle on the table..
Jake: It's alright you don't have to explain.
He pulled her into a hug. He kissed the top of her head.

From a distance a man had been watching the whole thing. How Jake had gone in and saved Chrissie. How he'd told her he loved her and how she'd told him she felt the same way about him. The man was wearing a red kimono with pyjamas underneath and a pair of worn-out slippers. The man was Alfie.

The screaming of sirens grew louder and the flashing blue and red lights made their way onto the square. The Slaters, the Millers, the Allens, the Truemans, the Fowlers and many more were all standing outside in their dressing gowns and slippers, watching the fire grow. But one of the people in the crowd wasn't watching the fire, she was watching Chrissie. She watched as Jake told the doctors Chrissie was fine and that if she wasn't, he'd take care of her.

Chrissie: I'm alright.
Doctor: We're still going to have to check to see that you are ok.
Jake: Look, she's fine. She doesn't need anyone hassling her, especially not you. Now just leave her alone.
He took her over to the Moon's, passing Alfie on his way.

She watched Chrissie and Jake disappear into the house with Alfie following soon after.

Jake walked Chrissie into the living room.
Jake: Right. Just sit down and I'll get you a cup of tea. It''l be alright, Darling, I promise.
She sat on the sofa. Alfie walked in.
Alfie: Are you alright?
She jumped.
Chrissie: I was until you gave me a heart attack.
Alfie: Sorry.. I saw Jake go in and save you. You're lucky to have a bloke who cares that much about you.
Chrissie: I know. Too good to be true, eh?
Nana walked in.
Nana: Hello darling.
Chrissie: Did we wake you? I'm sorry.
Nana: No you don't have to be sorry. I woke up to get a drink and then I looked out of my window and I saw the Vic on fire! I went down and told Alfie and he went out. Are you alright?
Jake walked in with Chrissie's tea and gave it to her.
Chrissie: Well I wouldn't be if Jake hadn't saved me.
Nana smiled proudly. There was a knock at the door. Jake went out and opened it.
Jake: Look, I've told you she's alright with me. Just go away.
Pauline: Fine then.
Jake: Oh Pauline.. I thought you were someone else. Come in.
Pauline: I just came by to drop this off for Chrissie.
She handed him a bag of her clothes from the laundrette.
Pauline: I thought she might need them.
Jake frowned.
Pauline: Well you didn't manage to rescue any of her clothes did you?
Jake: Er, thanks.
She walked away. He shut the door and walked back into the living room.
Jake: Pauline just came to give you this.
He put the bag on the floor infront of Chrissie. She looked through it and found her dressing gown.
Chrissie: I'm gonna go and get changed.
She stood up and walked out of the room. Nana looked at Jake.
Nana: You're a hero, you know that?
Jake: I think 'hero' is a bit of a strong way to put it, Nana.
Nana: No, darling, you not only saved Chrissie, you saved the baby too.

Chrissie was stood in her dressing gown. She tried to wash her face but the burns were still fresh and they started to sting if she touched them. She picked up her dress that was inside-out from the way she took it off. She was about to turn it back the right way round when she noticed something. There was a stain on the inner layer. But it wasn't any stain. It was a blood stain. She knew what that meant. She put her hands on her stomach and couldn't help but feel hollow inside. She'd lost the baby. It was as if it had never existed.

I hate myself for losing you
I'm seeing it all so clear

What do you do when you look in the mirror
And staring at you is why he's not here?
Chrissie walked into the living room, her dress in her arms. Jake looked up. She saw his charred face. He'd tried so hard but they'd lost the baby. Hot tears of pain ran down her face. He got up an pulled her into a comforting embrace.
Jake: It's alright, I'm here. It's ok. Everything is going to be fine.
She wanted to tell him but she didn't want to worry him. She couldn't get a word out anyway, she was crying too hard.

Chrissie woke up with Jake's arms tightly wrapped around her. She felt so safe, so protected, almost happy. Then it hit her. She remembered what she'd discovered last night. She remembered the nightmare she'd had. It was awful. She was in the fire again. She had a baby in her arms. Her baby. And she tried to find a way out but the doors and windows were missing. She found a hole in the wall. Jake was standing outside, calling her to get out. She tried but someone stood in her way. Den. He laughed with an evil look in his eye. She tried to push past him but he was to strong. He took the baby out her arms. "Go on Chrissie. Go to lover-boy over there. He's waiting for you," He shouted. She tried to take her child back but he pushed her to the floor. He kissed the baby's forehead and walked out.
Jake opened his eyes after hearing Chrissie's crying.
Jake: Hey. It's ok.
She jumped, startled by Jake's voice. He stroked her soft, golden curls.
Jake: Why don't you go back to sleep? You were up half the night crying.
Her voice shook.
Chrissie: I can't.. Den.. The baby..
Jake: Chrissie, I care about you. I hate seeing you like this. Just have a couple more hours of sleep. You'll feel much better.
She closed her eyes and drifted to sleep.

5 minutes ago Jake had left Chrissie with a slice of toast and a cup of tea. She took a bite out of the toast. It scratched the back of her throat. She sipped her tea. She needed a walk. She stood up and walked out, picking up her jacket on her way. The square was covered in a blanket of thick, white snow. Lucy, Peter, Darren and Demi were having a snowball fight, Kat and Alfie were making a snowman on the market, whilst Charlie was having trouble with the snow on his cab. Chrissie walked across the square. She paused infront of the blackened pub. So much had happened in the last 24 hours. She didn't want to think about any more and carried on walking. She passed through the market and went in the cafe. The room went quiet when all eyes fell upon her. She walked to the till.
Chrissie: I'll have a coffee. Make it a strong one.
Jane: Sure. Sit down, I'll bring it over.
Chrissie: Thanks Jane.
She sat down at a table in the corner. Ruby walked in to get drinks for Kat, Stacey and herself.
Ruby: Three teas to take out please Jane.
She looked around and spotted Chrissie on her own. She looked so pale. She looked like she wanted to just curl up in a ball and die.
Ruby: No forget that. I'll just have a hot chocolate.
She walked over to Chrissie.
Ruby: Can I sit here?
Chrissie: Yeah. Sure.
She sat down.
Ruby: I understand what you're going through.
Chrissie: No you don't.
Ruby: Yes I do. A few years ago there was a fire in my house. My Dad and me got out but my Mum and sister died.
Chrissie: Oh. I'm sorry.
Jane brought Chrissie's coffee and Ruby's hot chocolate over.
Ruby: It's alright. I saw you last night. I saw you and Jake. Your lucky he cares about you that much to, well, risk his life to save you.
Chrissie laughed quietly to herself.
Chrissie: You'd think I'd be happy after everything. But I'm not.
Ruby: Why? You've got everything to be happy about.
Chrissie: Like what?
Ruby: Well you're pregnant, aren't you?
Chrissie: I was.
Ruby: What do you mean?
Chrissie: Never mind. I shouldn't be telling you this anyway. You're just a kid.
Ruby: It'll help if you talk about it.
She sighed.
Chrissie: Well..
Tears escaped from her eyes.
Chrissie: I've lost the baby.
Ruby blinked.
Ruby: What? How?
Chrissie: The baby it's gone. It must've died in the fire.
Ruby: How do you know?
Chrissie: Because my periods have started again.
Ruby: Yeah but you can't know for sure.. Why don't you go to the doctors?
Chrissie: I don't want any fuss.
Ruby: You need to know. You could be wrong.
Chrissie: Alright then.. Thanks for talking to me. It's helped.
Ruby: No problem.
Chrissie: Another thing. If you see Jake, don't tell him about this.
Ruby: You haven't told him?
Chrissie: I don't want him worrying. Just don't tell him, please.
She thought for a moment.
Ruby: Alright then. I won't tell him anything.
Chrissie stood up.
Chrissie: Thankyou.. I better go and find out the truth, I guess.
Ruby: Bye.
Chrissie walked out of the cafe. She got her phone out and dialled the number for a cab.

Losing hope is easy

Chrissie pushed her way through the heavy swing doors into the Accident and Emergency department. She went up to the reception desk. The receptionist looked up for her computer screen.
Recept.: Yes?
Chrissie: I need to see a doctor.. about a threatened miscarriage.
Recept.: Right. Name?
Chrissie: Chrissie Watts
Recept.: Ok. Address?
Chrissie: Well I'm not really living anywhere. My home burned down last night.
Recept.: We still need an address.
Chrissie: I suppose I'm living with Jake now.. 41 Albert Square.
Recept.: Take a seat. You're not the top of the list seeing as your case isn't as serious as some others' cases, but a doctor will see you as soon as possible.
She sat over by the window. She looked out at the families having fun in the snow. Perhaps she'd have that with Jake. That was if she hadn't lost the baby. She looked down at her stomach. She could just hear the doctor saying, "I'm sorry. You've lost the baby". She was knocked back to her senses when she was called to see someone about it. She followed a nurse into a room. She was told to take off her shoes and lie on the sofa until the doctor arrived. She didn't have to wait long and the doctor began talking to her.
Dr: I'm Dr Sabir.
Chrissie: Ok.
Dr: You think you've had a miscarriage, am I right?
She nodded.
Chrissie: I think I lost the baby because the pub I live in caught fire when I was inside. My boyfriend saw and he saved me. I was getting changed and I saw a blood stain on my dress.
Dr: It's normal to have little bleeds when you're pregnant, even around the time you would usually have your periods. But we'll have to check anyway. We'll get the portable scanner in.
Dr. Sabir left Chrissie in the room to drink a full jug of water. A full bladder made it possible for the ultra-sound to make images of the baby in the womb. Back on the sofa Chrissie lay anxiously while the doctor rubbed a jelly-like goo over her tummy.
Dr: Sorry it's a bit cold. They usually warm it up if you have a scan in Antenatal. Ok, Chrissie? Try to relax.
She felt the firm circular movements as the doctor moved the transducer over her belly, pressing down too hard on her bladder so she squeaked.
Dr: Sorry.
She saw the doctor's face. She was frowning. She seemed to go over and over the same place, pushing at her abdomen until it almost felt sore.
Dr: Ok. Everything is fine. Want to see?
She swivelled round the small screen so that Chrissie could see it. The doctor pointed out the head.
Dr: And that's the heart. Beating fine. Something else is moving. An arm, I think. It's hard to see on this small machine. You'd get a better picture down on the full-sized machines in Antenatal.
But it was enough for Chrissie. Tear fell down her cheeks and pooled in her ears. That blur on the screen was her baby. Alive. She'd seen her baby. Everything was going to be alright.
