a wheat bag or hot water bottle does help. Also try and avoid eating chocolate and dairy products such as cheese 1 to 2 weeks before your periods are due that usually reduces the pain.

On the first day of mine I get pains really bad and they make me feel really sick and shivery, but by the next day I'm right as rain. :searchme: I've been using these aspirin powder things that dissolve in your mouth but they don't help much. I can't swallow tablets:(

I get BAD cramp when I'm at college, which isnt good. Usually ice cold water helps me. Not sure why but it does. Or a cup of tea.
i've never taken any medication with pains, i sit through them, even if they are really bad
i was gona say a cuppa tea is good and a nice hug helps all pain!!
I read in a magazine that green grapes help! i tried when i had pains, before taking a paracetomaol, but i accidently ate the whole bunch! they do ease the pain though!

no as when you are on your period you mostly just eat- it kind of like when you are prengent you just want these wired kind of foods
:searchme: What are periods again?! :rotfl: I've forgotten and the worse thing is that they change each time you have a child, so I really don't know what mine are going to come back like - the one thing that I am not looking forward to. I shall be getting my trusty wheat bag ready and willing - other than that, I generally just lie on my stomach, a bit like you Spicy. I find that lying on the source of the pain really does help, but my wheat bag is my trusted friend for sure....

no i meant belly aches as in poo pains as they make you wanna go to the loo if you eat too many LOL
( i was trying not to go into details :rotfl: )

Yeah you do have that kind of pain but what i was saying was that you normally want more food, so Grape has healthy as they have (what the word) niturns(sp)
I'm a bit like that at the mo - constantly eating fruit (well, plums and cherry tomatos) topped off with a raw carrot!!! At least eating this sort of stuff, may make it easier to lose the weight after (yeah right - who am I trying to kid lol)

the only thing that really used to help with my periopd pain was painkillers but then when i had a baby they improved dramatically. now i usually have a bit of back ache but not really any other pain! i know other people who stopped having period pains when they had their babies. not suggesting anyone gets pregnant to ease their pain though!!!!!!!

I used to have really bad pains, be really heavy etc and then had my eldest, they slowed down and didn't hurt quite so much, then once i had had my youngest they slowed even further (4 days) and i only had very slight pains just before.....

Just talking to Abbie :p. Which reminded me..
But sometimes I get really bad period pains in college. Like I feel like I'm going to faint and be sick etc, so I have to sit down take loads of painkillers. But sometimes I have no money and can't buy them, and it catches you off guard sometimes, so what would some people suggest for those times when you aren't prepared? Like in College or at work?? Cause it really is THAT bad sometimes!
I try to carry paraceatemol with me at all times now, just in case, but I can't afford them now, and don't want to ask my mum to get some.
SO far today I tried hot bath which worked whilst I was in the bath
Painkillers- no effect
Hot water bottle- nice but no effect
Just sitting and resting- I cant get comfortable
CrazyLea
30-12-2007, 23:07
This is going to sound odd :p But if I'm in bed and can't be bothered to get painkillers, I lie on my back and pat my stomach. That sometimes helps.
Try curling up with your legs clost to your head.
And this will sound weird too . Gently pinch your arm.. not too hard.. or your head.. or somewhere higher than your stomach.. as I don't know why, but that helps me sometimes too.
Lol earlier tdoday I did rub my stomach that didnt have much effect but when I nearly fell asleep curled up like you said it did

Ive said this in the shoutbox, but I'll share my wisdom with you all in this thread! :D
1) Run up and downstairs, go on a trampoline, or do other exercise.
2) Take as many pain killers as possible.
3) Take evening primrose oil capules
4) Get someone to knock you out with a mallet (this is a joke and not really adviseable).
5) Watch some trashy TV or listen to some really cool music...to try and take your mind off the hell you are going through...
Yeah I did take my mind off it earlier but when its constant pain all day its very hard
Nothing seems to work on mine either. I was like the second in my year starting them, and had next to no trouble with them for years. Now I'm lucky if I just have a day of pain with each one now.
I try to carry paraceatemol with me at all times now, just in case, but I can't afford them now, and don't want to ask my mum to get some.
Tesco sell paracetamol, 16p for 16. Ibuprofen is 42p for 16.
You could always go to the doctor if they are really bad. Don't put up with pain when your doctor can probably do something about it.
hehe I get the paracetamol from Tessco

I had really bad pains again yesterday and today.
I took some Nurofen. But yesterday it didn't help :( Was in college too. So couldn't roll up in a ball or anything  I felt so sick and faint from it lol.
Anyone reccommend some really good over the counter painkillers?
I usually have paraceatemol or nurofen.. sometimes ibruprofen.. but I dunno?
i suffer with bad period pains, normal paracetamol dosent work at all, i use panadol extra strength now and last few months it has been really good, taken away my pain and i even can sleep on first night of period. Usually im in pain all night on first night.
my wheat bag helps as well as unlike a water bottle i can mould it round my tummy, only downside is it dosent stay hot as long

You can get pills from the doctor, delaying your period. Don't know how soon you are going and how long before you would need to start taking them but probably would not hurt discussing this with the doc.

Thats a pain, when I went to Florida for a month I couldnt avoid it obviously
I understand that the contraceptive injection stops your periods alltogether, a friend of mine uses this after experiencing bad period pains. She is very happy now. Something you might want to consider and discuss with the doctor.

I didn't put on any weight or lose any weight when I was on the pill but I was ill all the time.. My niece was on injection and she lost weight.. it really does depend on you. I know loads who have been great on the injection and myself and another girl were both very very ill and moody so we had to stop..
Both of my sisters and two of my friends have been on the pill and all of them put lots of weight on.
I have to see the doctor soon for a review so I might ask her about it then. I don't want to stay on hormone contraceptives for too long as my sisters reacted badly to them, both developed PCOS, my eldest sister had to have an ovary removed and the other one has gynae problems from the hormones.

Let me know what they say if you do go.
I talked to my mum and she's making an appointment for Wednesday, I'll let you know how it goes :)
I wouldn't recommend the injection - I had it for a year and bled for that entire year!
I had the implant, and also bled constantly with that.
Some people are less sensitive to progesterone therefore causing the extra bleeding.
The pill affects everyone in different ways and unfortunately its mostly trial and error - I'm gradually running out of options.
One thing I have found, apologies in advance for too much information, is that tampon use worsened my period pain. I've been now using a mooncup and since then, have had no problems with pain at all - some people have said some medical info has said that some of the chemicals used in sanitary wear can cause the pain to worsen, although not sure how true that is.
For you ladies that wish to delay your period for holidays etc, definitely speak to your doctor. They can provide you with a pill (as previously posted) that will delay your period whilst you are taking the tablets.

Cool thanks.
That looks really good! Might get me one!
For me its an absolute godsend.
Before, I used to have to change every hour minimum (both tampon and towel) and would have the most excruciating pain.
Now, I haven't had to either worry about making sure I've enough protection in the house, nor have I leaked or had any pains.
You know where I am if you wanna chat about it, but I'd certainly highly recommend it. The website is great for info, but sometimes a chat with someone who uses one helps moreso.
Oh and you can get them cheaper than the price stated on their website (I think mine cost just over £10)

I was looking on the FAQ.. and it said you could wear it at night.. do you? Is that reccommended? Says to wear it 8 hours at the most before emptying it.. what if you accidentaly sleep over 8 hours :p.
Am I thinking too much ?
I've been thinking about getting a mooncup for a while. They are much more convienient and discreet than tampons and cheaper in the long run.
I've been holding back because I don't know how easy they are to insert. It looks a doddle on the website but does it actually unfold after you put it in?
About the tablet, does it stop your period for as long as you take it? How long before your period is due do you start taking it?

You're overly worrying lol - I use mine overnight and where I used to have to get up twice a night to change because I was so heavy, I didn't have any problems and slept more soundly than before. Its the same with tampon use - they advise to change at least every 8 hrs (if you get to 8 hrs that is lol)
It can take a while to get used to, a while being 2 or 3 goes at putting it in, rather than weeks if you see what I mean, but basically its exactly the same as tampons - it unfolds once in, which then forms the seal and the cup, preventing leakage. It sits lower down than a tampon, but it still unfelt, but like it says on the website, you may need to trim the stalk (I removed my stalk completely)
I've saved so much money since my periods returned after having baby number 4, nearly 4 months ago, that already my pocket has noticed the difference.
The tablets stop your periods whilst you take them, then once you stop taking them, you'll have a breakthrough bleed, a bit like if you are on the combined pill. Its usually about 2 or 3 days after stopping taking the tablet. They normally advise to take the tablet a week before you leave to go wherever you are going, so its not dependant on when your period is due. They say to take it a week a head in case of any spotting is experienced though.
They are a total pain! Mine seem to have developed a habit of starting early in an inconvenient place. I started in an exam that was part of one of my Science GCSE's once, and today it was in Maths. It was lucky I had a night pad and paracetomol in my bag really; narrowly escaped having to ask the pupil receptionist for sanitary pads. I had no pain with them for years; one painful one in six months max, and now they hurt every time.

I completely agree they are a pain!
You jsut want to curl up and laze about in your pyjamas all day and do nothing but eat chocoalte and cry over silly things (if you get mood swings as everyone is different) lol.
School is the worst :(
Yuck hate going to school, it's just uncomfortable and you can't concentrate, and the pains seem to get worse there too!
Fun :(
I usually take nurofen but it doesn't seem to work very well anymore.
Could anyone reccomend any stronger tablets??
Thanks :)

A couple of paracetomel every 4-5 hours seems to sort me out, I try to wait longer than that though I don't like taking to many
Taking two paracetamol and one ibruprofen together helps with the pain. My GP told me they work better together than on their own. Co-codamol are ace, sort the pain out quick smart. You can only get them on prescription though.
Does anybody get sore legs? I find it really odd that my legs ache and feel heavy yet I don't have any pain.

Yeahh I've had co-codamol before off my Mum and they worked a treat. Any ideas how you go about getting them from the doctors? They're funny about giving pills and things for period pains aren't they??
I've never had the sore achy legs with no pain, but I think I'd prefer that to an achy tummy with pain!! lol :)
I get them for joint pain but I use them for lots of different things. I even take them when I can't sleep because they make me drowsy. I know I shouldn't but I do sometimes.
I saw a doctor at my practice and she gave me ibruprofen which didn't work. I was hankering after co-codamol as my GP had prescribed them for me before but she doesn't like prescribing painkillers. I saw my GP after a week and he gave me co-codamol. I guess it depends what sort of GP you have. Mine is excellent, even if he does talk too fast for me to understand him (he's irish).
Anyway, I don't know if they prescribe CC for period pain. Explain that paracetamol and ibruprofen, warm baths, hot water bottles etc don't work and you would like something stronger. Whatever you do, don't tell them that your mum gave you CC or any other prescription drug.

Who's idea was it to put us women through this every month?
Let me know what they say if you do go.
I talked to my mum and she's making an appointment for Wednesday, I'll let you know how it goes :)
I have to go see a male doctor, I'd rather see any doctor than none but yeah...prefer a women really :o There weren't any free appointments in the afternoon so I'm going to try tommorow or Friday
Can't you see a practice nurse or nurse practitioner?

It went ok, the Doctor basically did all the asking, anyways, got the pill - yay :)
General question though - the Doctor said I shouldn't take the first pill until the first day of my next period, does it slow it down straight away? Or does it take until the next month to take effect?
Are you taking the contraceptive pill or the one to stop your period for a bit?
I've got another question on the mooncup, sorry for being graphic. When you lay down does the blood run out of the cup?

No it doesn't because a seal is formed internally around the cup, if you see what I mean.
If you have any questions that you are a bit worried about posting openly, you are more than welcome to pm me and I'll answer anything you want to know.
contraceptive combined pill, I didn't ask about the other one :o
The contraceptive combined pill can sometimes cause you to bleed constantly when you first start taking it and other times you will have a normal period and then possibly some spotting. It reacts with different people in different ways.
They normally advise to start taking on the first day of your period so as to ensure that you aren't pregnant generally.

you can get co codamol at the chemist and boots also do their own make of paracetamol with codeine which is basically the same. you can get them at the online pharmacy's too. they do 8/500 strength and 30/500 but the 30/500 are very strong and i wouldnt recommend using them without a doctor prescribing them for severe pain. my daughter who is 13 and i both use the 8/500 strength with no problem.
I didn't know you could get co-codamol over the counter. The 8/500 knock me out so I'd better not get 30/500.

I didn't really make myself clear, sorry :o I'm not taking it for contraception, just to make my periods lighter because when I have them they really affect my life, I don't go out at all etc..
I just wondered if taking the pill before my period started would cause me to either have it early or delay it, it's just I'm going to Germany next week, and starting the pill on the day of my period would mean I would be in Germany and be in total hell for 4 days :o
By the other one I meant asking the doctor about delaying it until I get back from Germany.

A lot would depend on whether you were already taking a form of oral contraceptive (for whatever reason) and on how your body reacts to the hormones contained.
I've recently been put on a new form of mini pill and have benn on for the past 3 weeks. They all act differently with different people unfortunately, so you won't know till you start taking it.

I'm on the pill, it really helps, you should talk to your doctor about it :)
Damp heat is very good, so wrap a damp teatowel round a hotwater bottle, lie on you back, put your feet against a wall, armrest etc., your legs should be at a 45 deg angle (i.e. knees pointing to the ceiling and soles of feet against wall, armrest etc. - does this make sense?) The pill helped reduce my pain a lot as well though.

My friend was saying that she went to the doctor for the pill to help calm her period pains but they wouldn't give it to her, but they did prescribe her with something to help calm them down so if you aren't able to get the pill I'm sure they'd give you something else :)
This probably sounds a bit stupid, but being 15 would they give it to me?
They should do. As long as the doctor is sure that you understand what you're asking for and what the tablet does then you should be ok.
Some doctors may be reluctant to prescribe it because the age of consent is 16 in England and they don't condone underage sex. I'm not saying that you are but some doctors may see it that way.
If you take your mum with you you stand a better chance of getting it. If you don't want your parents to know then the doctor can't tell them as long as s/he is sure that you understand what s/he is saying.
Seeing as we were talking about it in this thread a while back I thought I'd tell you all about my mooncup.
I got it this morning from ebay. I was quite worried at the size of the top of the cup, it looked huge. I managed to get it in first time but getting it out was a nightmare. I pulled it down and broke the seal but it just wouldn't come out. It hurt like hell and I was getting more worried so I tensed up and made it worse :rotfl: I got it out after about five minutes of panicking.
The instructions say to try it on the last two days of your period. Mine finished about four days ago so maybe thats why I had trouble getting it out. I'm going to wait until my next period to try it again, don't want to go through all that pain again for nothing :rotfl:
I got a size B cup which is for women under 30 who haven't had any children or had a c-section.

30-04-2008, 16:28
What are mooncups?
Like... what do you actually do?
And are they any good?
:) Thanks
The Mooncup is a reusable menstrual cup around two inches long and made from soft silicone rubber. It is worn internally like a tampon but collects menstrual fluid rather than absorbing. Unlike tampons the Mooncup is not a disposable product, so you only need to buy one.
http://www.mooncup.co.uk/menstrual_cup_whatisit.html
I got mine from ebay. You can get them from Boots as well.
TMI ALERT!!!!!
Rather than pulling it down, I've found a far better way of releasing the suction, Abigail. It won't hurt, causes no pain and is a lot easier and can also be practiced when you are not on your period.
PM me and I'll explain, but probably best not to post here how, as its definitely slightly TMI for an open forum.

The most common side effect is constipation, seeing as antacids (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antacid) are made from salts. As long as you don't take too many (I take two at a time) then you should be ok.

I get really really bad period pains. Sat here just now with a water bottle on my stomach to try calm it down, eating a twirl at the moment, cause my mum always recommends chcocolate but the downside is tablets dont always work for me. I've been on the pill before and it managed to muck my periods up so stopped taking them. But not it's getting to the point where i don't eat at all for the first day and it's agony, i can't take days off for college now either. Yesterday I had to wait 4 hrs before attempting to eat food as my stomach kept turning over and every smell around me made me feel bad inside :(
I haven't taken anything like ibuprofen or paracetamol cause i need to eat before i take them.
Is that because they make you feel ill if you don't take them with food or because of the instructions on the packet?
It's generally fine to take paracetamol and ibuprofen on an empty stomach. If you take them with food, it will take longer to get into your system.
