The Slater girl goes into hiding as the Mitchells gang up on her with Sharon and Dennis to try and make her retract her alibi for Killer Chrissie

As much as the return of the Mitchell brothers brought a spark of comedy and energy back into this soap last week, even that can’t compensate for a lack of credibility with this particular plot.

Losing its traditional skill of telling a story simply and entertainingly, Enders is tying itself into such knots that it’ll take a brigade of boy scouts with a torch, map and compass to unravel them.

But buried beneath the feud between Johnny Allen and the Mitchells, Dennis and Sharon falling out because of her believing in ‘the chuckle bruvvers’ and Sam’s innocence, and Chrissie and Jake planning to run off is one simple fact. They have to persuade Stacey to tell the truth and prove Chrissie killed Dead Den.

‘Now come on, boys,’ Peggy decides on Monday, ‘let’s make a promise. Today’s the day we nail Chrissie.’

Under the banner of ‘Justice For Dad’ – as if that’s going to catch on as a rallying call – Sharon tries to convince Stacey to change her alibi. Then Grant turns on his charm offensive.

‘Now, you ’ave 10 seconds to pick up the phone and tell the Old Bill you’ve ’ad a change of mind,’ he threatens the kid. ‘Do it! Or I’ll ’ave to ’urt you.’

And so it runs throughout the week. Lacey Turner as Stacey is the best thing about the episodes, even if her fearlessness is hardly likely in a 16-year-old girl when faced with the wrath of Sharon, Phil, Grant, Peggy and eventually Dennis joining their alliance.

‘They’re just a coupla slap ’eads,’ she sneers of Grunt and Philthy, with her most repeated line being: ‘Don’t worry. It’s nuffin I can’t handle.’ And this is presumably why she does a runner, even if Dennis proudly declares to the others on Thursday: ‘I’ve just broken Stacey’s alibi. Chrissie’s goin’ down.’

Oh no, she isn’t. Because Stacey is eventually found and she still refuses to retract her statement to the police.

All may not be lost, though, as Johnny has a videotape of Chrissie admitting she murdered Den. But this is all so far-fetched, he’s more likely to send it in to You’ve Been Framed than let the Mitchells have it. Or will he?

ALSO:

Exactly what is it that Johnny Allen is putting on his cornflakes? Viagra? The Square’s hardman, so to speak, has a busy Monday. First he’s kissing barmaid Amy and it sounds like they are unblocking a sink. Then he comes on to Chrissie. Perhaps he has a new business – Studs-u-like?
