View Full Version : Bestie is 'close to the end'
DESPERATELY ill George Best yesterday sent farewell messages to ex-lovers and pals — saying: “I’m near the end.”
Best, who is unable to speak, got an aide to ring his close friends with the poignant goodbyes.
Stephen Purdew, boss of the Champneys health resort where 59-year-old Best lived for two years, said: “I’ve had what amounts to a farewell message from George.
“It was made clear he might have days — if not hours — to live. It was obvious he is gravely ill.”
Best’s son Calum broke down in tears last night.
The 24-year-old said: “It is really hard to talk about this, he is my old man.
“It is very very serious. I have heard words like ‘it’s touch and go’ and ‘it’s not looking good’.
“We have got through hard times before but this is not easy for me.”
Ex Alex .. prayers
And Best’s ex-wife Alex said: “I’m just praying that somehow he once again manages to pull through against the odds.”
The Manchester United legend sent the messages after doctors found he was bleeding internally.
Best, an infamous womaniser, is also thought to have contacted a string of ex-lovers.
The alcoholic, who received a life-saving liver transplant in 2002, was admitted to West London’s Cromwell Hospital with flu-like symptoms three weeks ago. He later developed a serious kidney infection.
Best’s friend and agent Phil Hughes said: “He is seriously ill — it’s about as bad as it gets. He’s fighting for his life.
“He took a turn for the worse a couple of days ago and he has been unconscious since 1pm today. He is stable now.”
Professor Roger Williams, the consultant in charge of his care, said last night: “There’s still a chance we can get him through this.”
I know gossip isn't the best place to put this but couldn't think of anywhere else.
Very sad - he was a legend in his day - just a shame about his drinking etc.

i feel sad for his family
I feel sorry for his family, But as for George, I know this sounds harsh. But he had every thing good looks and wonderful football career and money. He has drunk himself into this state, was given a liver transplant, and a new lease on life which many people don't get, then still carried on drinking. He has only got himself to blame.
I feel for his family and friends.
I also feel for the family who's loved ones live went to him as well
it's really sad, he is a Legend

What a tragic waste of a life. he was a brilliant footballer and was stunningly handsome before he turned to drink.
it really is sad. I feel for his family, and close friends.

Alcoholism is a disease. George did try hard to kick the habit but couldnt. I think you are being a bit unfair. There for the grace of God etc . It could happen to any one of us or our families.

As an chronic alcoholic he could not control himself and stop himself going back on the booze. Now it would appear that he has paid the ultimate price

Yeah but surely if he nearly died once, but was given another chance he would change himself. Sorry but i dont think its a disease... If people can give up drugs they can give up alcohol

it was not georges fault he became an alcoholic when he first came into the public eye away back in the 60's he was just a young lad from ireland who was suddenly thrown into the limelight given loads of dosh and surrounded by models. Its not like todays footballers who have advisors helping them adjust to the celebrity lifestyle. I know that george could have choosen to stop drinking when he had his transpalnt but alcoholism is an illness and unless you suffer from it you don't know what he is going through. Regardless of that he was a brilliant footballer in his day. God bless you george xx

Sadly it is a disease. And I really hope that it never affects anyone you know or love.
