Elaborate plans are being drawn up to kill off one of the most recognisable faces on Albert Square.

Grant Mitchell, played by bald actor Ross Kemp, has only just made his return to EastEnders, along with his on-screen family played by Steve McFadden and Barbara Windsor.

But now chiefs on the Walford soap are apparently scheming to give Grant a send-off from which he won't be able to recover.

An EastEnders mole told the Daily Star: "The thinking is that [Ross] will stay only for a four-month period next year and then put the role to bed for good.

"It may be an opportunity for us to give Ross the send-off he'd like for Grant - a massively heroic death."

The scene is being set already, as the Mitchells have returned primarily to fight off their rival Johnny Allen, who is taking up positions of power left vacant first by the Mitchells themselves and then by murdered Dirty Den Watts.

It is thought that Johnny is going to want revenge on Grant's mum Peggy, which gives Grant the perfect opportunity to die doing a good deed - saving his beloved mother.

The insider continued: "Ross would not be distraught if Grant were to be killed off. In fact, he's mentioned it himself on several occasions."

It's interesting! Although I've heard that Johnny leaves our screens in February, and I don't think Grant comes back for a while after that, I may be wrong.

It would be quite sad if Grant died, although he's been away for a such a long time now, he would have to be on our screens long enough for the audience to really care about him. But I suppose there are certain characters you never forget, like Grant and Den.

I think it's probably just a rumour. The writers may be considering it, but maybe not finalised. I've read the interview about Ross saying he wouldn't mind being killed off, but I think it would be a shame, knowing that Mitchells could never be reunited. Like it is with the Watts now.

I think EE need to be VERY careful before they do this, killing off a legand such as Grant should only be done if Ross Kemp absolutly does not intend to ever come back after his expected stint next year.

killing grant would be really stupid why is it that when people leave soaps they always have to die. it is said that soaps are real life you dont see people dying all the time in real life and if a star leaves they don't have to come back they only have to say no. saying that i'm a massive ross kemp fan so maybe i'm just being protective lol

I think they will only kill off Grant if Ross Kemp is 100% sure that he never wants to return again. If there is the slightest doubt then I don't think they will do it. With Peggy and Phil back in the Square on a more permanent basis, they might just leave Grant in Rio. It would be too much of a risk to kill Grant off whilst Peggy and Phil are still in the Square.

I think Ross is quite friendly with Tony Jordan and John Yorke, so I think they would only kill Grant off if Ross Kemp wanted him to be killed off.

Judging by the stupid idea of killing of Den Watts (THE FIRST TIME) its shows that if they ever hope to bring anyone back in the future they should not kill the character off because as was proven in the Return of Den it just does not work. If they want rid of GWANT why dont they just send him off somewhere and then in the future if he needs back then a plausible reason can be given.

Note they have never killed the uninteresting characters!!

I know Ross Kemp isnt planning a permanent return and had to be coaxed back with a highly lucrative deal, but let grant live the good life in rio - dont kill him off!

I would much prefer to watch with a small possibility of his return than knowing he will never come back permanently........

then again, look what happened the last time they killed off a fab character only to unconvincingly bring him back......

Please learn from the mistakes of the past, they might regret it in twenty years time lol :D

I havent seen that he is to die in any interview he has done, so where they are getting that from is weird.

I know he has stated he got a sweet deal out of returning to EE, so we'll see but they shouldnt kill him off.

Thank goodness these people have sense at last, actually after reading Ross Kemp's interview,, I can't see how he would be killed off with BBC paying him a poop load of moola to return to BBC...

i know he only came back for 2 weeks originally but he is back again next year isn't he? then im hoping he might stay permenantly although i don't really think an established actor like ross kemp will stay in walford forever without persuing other projects but we can hope can't we.

Yes he is coming back next year for a three month stint (not sure if thats three months filming or three months on air) but i doubt he will stay any longer. He still has his ITV deal.
