Inspector Gina Gold (Roberta Taylor) receives a warm welcome from Superintendent Adam Okaro (Cyril Nri) and the rest of the relief on her return to Sun Hill. She wastes no time in getting the team to work by splitting them into pairs who’ll arrest offenders who have failed to attend their court dates.
DC Jo Masters (Sally Rogers) and DS Phil Hunter (Scott Maslen) are assigned to investigate an armed robbery at an off-licence. After watching the CCTV, they learn that the gun back-fired, shooting one of the robbers in the stomach. Further investigation takes Jo and Phil to a garage where they find the motorbike used in the robbery and equipment to suggest criminal Gareth Dickson (Glenn Hodge) is making shoddy guns and selling them on. Phil and Jo are led to an address where they discover a bag full of armaments, and Gareth’s young nephew, Tyler (Luke Rose), playing with one of the home-made weapons in the garden. Will Phil be able to persuade the eight year old give the gun up before it tragically misfires again?
Sergeant June Ackland (Trudie Goodwin) is surprised to see PC Sheelagh Murphy (Bernie Nolan) back at work and partnered with PC Laura Bryant (Melanie Kilburn). Sheelagh admits that since her murdering fiancé, David Kent’s (Todd Carty) death, she has lost all confidence in her ability as a copper and is thinking about resigning.
Paired with PC Leela Kapoor (Seema Bowri), PC Roger Valentine (John Bowler) manages to upset PC Dan Casper (Chris Jarvis) and Sheelagh by taking the mickey out of Dan’s affair and Sheelagh’s mistake of arresting a critically injured man. He makes it a hat-trick by persuading Leela to finish his paperwork for him after complaining of feeling ill and going to the pub instead.
And, ex-philanderer, Phil realises he can’t avoid Kate and the baby forever and tells Cindy (Jacqueline Defferary) about the birth. Cindy demands that if they are to make a real go of their relationship, he has to have a DNA test so they know, for once and for all, whether he is the father.

Tensions mount between PC Roger Valentine (John Bowler) and PC Leela Kapoor (Seema Bowri) as they investigate bent Barton Street Sergeant, Harry Haynes (Dave Hill). Harry offers Roger a deal where he can earn up to £5,000 a month covering for factory owner, Clive Adamski (Rad Lazar) who hires illegal immigrants. Is Roger tempted by the money or will he and Leela put their necks on the line and shop the corrupt copper?
The day of the coroner’s hearing into PC David Kent’s (Todd Carty) death arrives and Sergeant June Ackland (Trudie Goodwin) nervously prepares to see her son, Gabriel (James Barriscale) again. He pushes June for information about his father and when she eventually reveals she was raped, Gabriel is stunned.
PC Sheelagh Muprhy (Bernie Nolan) announces at the pub that she is leaving Sun Hill. She tells her colleagues she has decided to transfer to the Child Protection Unit at Croydon. And June is over the moon when Gabriel walks into the pub to see her. A proud June is delighted when he introduces himself to the team as her son.
