Smash hit sci-fi show Dr Who has bagged a string of nominations for this year's National Television Awards.

The Doctor - Christopher Eccleston - is up for most popular actor, and his assistant - Billie Piper - has been nominated for most popular actress.

Christopher is stepping down from the role, so winning the gong could be a great send-off for him.

Dr Who is also in the running for most popular drama, where its competitors include Bad Girls and The Bill.

There will be a new category at this year's bash - most popular expert on TV.

X Factor judges Sharon Osbourne and Simon Cowell and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver are among those nominated.

Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks will compete for most popular serial drama.

The shortlists were voted for by the public.

The ceremony will be held at London's Royal Albert Hall on October 25.
