Junk food will be banished from every school in Britain from next September, its was announced yesterday. Cheap Burgers, chicken nuggets, and turkey twislers are to be scraped from the lunchtime menu. And vending machines that offer tooth-rotting sweets, chocolate, and fizzy drinks.

Well its about time, i think. My canteen has been awfull ever since i started there, and me aqnd my year council spent all last year trying to change it. Beleive it or not, the people who resisted most were the teachers, and helpers. They just didn't want change, and we didn't and dont have the authority to change it. Now they can't, and i'm soo happy about that. The government seem to think that we enjoy the food int he canteen, but its disgusting at my school. I ate there once and THREW UP!

I think its great, what do you think? :cheer:

i'm glad i wont be there when this kicks in! lol, not that i buy from the school canteen but i love the burgurs we have they are so tasty! But not very good for you! lol. i think its a good idea though, since watching jamie's school dinners i've really thought it wasa good idea to help kids eating healthily, its about time too. its not going to work though if parents dont support it beacuse they will just feed their kids junk food at home and put it in their lunches, i think a lot of kids will change to packed lunch and bring what they want. which kinds of defeats the object of doing it! lol

my son has packed lunch,he's way too fussy to have a school dinner but personally i think its up to the parents to decide if they want there child eating chips and junk food etc if not then do them a packed lunch if they are that concerned

My son has started high school this year and spends his lunchtimes eating hot beef sandwiches as the line is shorter for those. He's been there 3 weeks and never had time to stand in line and get a proper dinner. When i was at school the times for going in to lunch were staggered to give everyone a chance to buy from the canteen. Imagine going into a cafe where 700 people are queing for dinner and you've only got an hour.

All this talk of healthy choice etc, The schools are to be blamed here as meals are brought in rather than cooked on the premises, except for burgers and a like. When I was at school it was cooked on the premises and healthy choice, and a salad bar too,all year round. You had proper meals not junk,I loved the shepherds pie and the lamb.this was back in the 60's.So to say its getting healthier yes, may be comparing with the food served over the last few years. But we had the balance right all them years ago.

Tori

well, i have packed lunches, so i don't know everything about them, but what i do know is that we have over the past 5 years implemented healthy eating strategies- one of our cafes only sells pasta and baked potatoes, we are now a private company, so the cooks choose what to buy and what to make etc, so its healthy. glad of the changes but sad that they can't be implemented in college, because thats where i'll be next year!!

Well the straegywe were taking with out canteen is "healthier, now healthy" so basically we were going to start off by getting rid of, for example, full fat coke, and replace it with diet, then get rid of it alltogether. Now we have a government guideline, so we can't replace it with diet for a bit. Its better, because to be honest, our canteen was a load of ****. Now we mean busness (!!!) so they've got to listen. I think its great, its about time people did something.

we don't sell fizzy drinks or crisps anymore, and people are encouraged to have fruit... i like their sausage barms though!!

Abi
02-10-2005, 15:51
what are sausage barms?

Tori
02-10-2005, 17:40
omg,you've never heard of them???

sausages in a bun... you can also get egg barms and bacon barms, but our school didn't do them!

Our canteen said that it was going to become healthy.. It never happened they hired all new staff and to me its all the same. Just because they do caulliflower cheese on tuesdays does this make it healthy!!??

Gabby

Exactly, they call that healthy. They used to do beef burgers and chicken burgers, now they do veggie and lamb burgers because they think they are a lot healthier! Aren't they just as bad!!!!

Schools today need to make more of an effort and replace all of the unhealthy food with healthy food just like the older Generation had

Tori
03-10-2005, 17:12
yeah... blame Margerat Thatcher... she was the one who introduced all this stuff wasn't she?

Abi
03-10-2005, 19:58
I completly agree ddmac1. Theres no excuse, everyone knows what this rubbish does to our bodies, so why fed it to us?

Normally, I wouldn't mind, but our canteen is terrible - All the fruit etc. is old and bruised, and its about 60p for a banna that's way past it's sell by date. Also, our dining room has a small chocolate machine (40p! :O) but the sixth form common room has about 5, all cheaper and filled with more variety, but that'll have to go. The year that I join Sixth Form as well, sods law.

I think it'll be good, as long as they put the prices down. You can get a full meal (pizza, chips, can of coke and a pudding) at my school for around £1.60, but the healthy eating stuff costs a lot more! Our salads are about £1.35 each, for a tiny pot filled with some damp lettice leaves.

when i was at school there was not 1 salad that i can recall in the canteen!! now the meals at my sons school are a lot better, but he still has packup as it is cheaper the meals are 1.55 a day so it can work out quite expensive

Jojo
04-10-2005, 12:39
When I was at school I tended to live off of chips and gravy as it was the only thing just about digestible!!! lol

My eldest has just started community college (high school in my day) and they have a good variety but still have the good ol' chicken nuggets etc, which as has been said, is cheaper than salads etc....

willow
04-10-2005, 13:29
i lived on sausage rolls and slush puppies

Schools today need to make more of an effort and replace all of the unhealthy food with healthy food just like the older Generation had I totally agree with you I was having school dinners in infant school through to when I left school in 1969. Our meals were filling and fully cooked on premises and you had 4 choices for main course and 4 desserts and salad bar, chips only on fridays with fish. no junk food at all, We were out in the play ground running around no sitting in librarys on computers. didn't have them. we were much healthier than and now, because we learnt to eat fruit and veg or go hungry :cheer:

well my daughter has packed lunches because she hates school dinners but next year she start secondary school so i supose she will be going to the shop and buying loads of sweets like the rest of them
i think its a good idea because a lot of parents give their kids junk food at home so at least those kids will get a desent meal in them

Tori
04-10-2005, 18:02
at primary schools, the food was mashed slush when i was there... it was basically 3 mounds of slush- i'm glad i had packed lunches.

luckily, my school now has digestible stuff, and the prices are still quite expensive, but the healthy stuff is cheaper, which i feel is better. theres still a long way to go to push out the mc donalds style stuff in 1 of the caffes

04-10-2005, 18:07
NOOOOOOOOOO! i need my lucozade and giant chocolate chip cookies!! Don't take them away from me!! :crying: I really don't want that to happen. We already have like healthy sandwiches and stuff in the canteen and soup and stuff. They can't take away the sugary stuff, its what keeps you going throughout the school day!!

I think its good. We used to get all the horrible food in, but then our school started doing it and we still had stuff like chicken nuggets, but they were made with real bits of chicken. I don't often eat school stuff, but our school does a wide range of things. We do have machines full of cocolate and crisps though! There are 3 in the school including one outside our from room. Some stuff in it though is healthy. The point is kids will jst bring in the crisps and choclate probably

Or the pearents give the kids money for a healthy school lunch and they go up th local chip shop!! or newsagesnts.ahem, *looks around the room whistling innocently* don't look at me! Actually, thats not strictly true. At our school we have these powerade things and i'd rather buy 5 of those and get a sugar rush for last lesson with my mates rather than go and spend it on crisps!!

At my college we've got vending machines everywhere and a Lifestyle Bar that serves the nicest hot chocolate and toffee waffles ever! They are probably sooo unhealthy but I don't care!

Tori
05-10-2005, 15:57
we don't have the sports centre vending machines on in the day, and you aren't allowed to go out of the school grounds, so people have to stay. it works quite well as the food is now nice!!

I have dinner discs so i have to buy from the canteen!
Our school has both anyway! One side has pasta, salads, fruit, jacket potatoes and the meal of the day and the other has homemade pizzas, wedges e.t.c
They stopped selling turkey twizzlers, chips, processed foods 2 years ago!

I volunteer for things like that, but never get picked In my school, its more a popularity contest than who would be better for the job. Our library is run by special library staff anyway.

I was going to volunteer for the school council this year, only to be informed that the ones last year and two other girls had decided amongst themselves in the Summer Holidays that they would take over.

Tori
07-10-2005, 17:47
i hate it aswell- most of the stuff seems to be a popularity contest- i didn't get ambassador or year councillory because of it :(
