I just went through it really slowly, and it still gave me 5000, but if you add the numbers as numbers then it works. Strange... :hmm:

It's pretty simple once you know how:D

Once you have added all the numbers together except the last one, you get 4090. Adding the last 10 gives you 4100. In your head though, you think you've actually got 4990, so adding the last 10 would give you 5000. It's psychological. It makes more sense to your head that all the numbers would add up to 5000 than a random number like 4100.

So hazey how does the maths one work?? Come on it's really bugging me now..... Its all in the way the smaller numbers are put in take a 1000 add 40 then add 1000 now add 30 and another
1000 now add 20 now add 1000 now add 10.

so you had 1000 at 40 =1,040 then add 1000 =2,040 add 30 = 2,070 add 1000 =3,070 now add 20 = 3,090 now add 1000 = 4,090 now add 10 =4,100. Because they put no commas in by the time you get to the end your mind wants to think in thousands.and as you read it quick you believe 30 to be 300, etc, most people get 5,090 or 5,000. I only got it as I am use to these sort of questions, hope this helps
