Friends theme tune

Can anyone tell me if the theme tune for friends was made just for friends or was it released before that? :confused:

It was made specially for Friends. When they realised people liked it, they made it into a full length song and released it!

From an Official Friends book that I have:

At a mere 45 seconds, the original version of 'I'll Be There For You' was little more than a riff. But as the show began to pick up steam during the first season, disc jockeys around the country began taping it off the television and playing it on the air. Obviously, the public was ready for more - so Marta Kauffman and David Crane added additional lyrics to make it a full-blown pop anthem.
