Bill's survivor quits Sun Hill beat

VETERAN Bill star Trudie Goodwin is quitting the show after 21 years as Sergeant June Ackland.

Trudie, 53, the last original cast member to leave the long-running ITV1 police series, said: "The years have flown by. I've had a brilliant time on The Bill.

"I don't regret my decision to stay for so long for a second. But it's time to move on."

Sgt Ackland will leave The Bill, which tonight broadcasts a live episode as part of ITV's 50th birthday celebrations, once producers devise an explosive storyline.

Trudie's character has featured in some of the popular show's most dramatic plots.

June married alcoholic detective Jim Carver (Mark Wingett) before he gambled away her pension. Another original 80s character, Carver left the show in February.

She also had a torrid fling with Pc Gabriel Kent, played by former Eastender Todd Carty, who later claimed to be her son.

Trudie has made the decision following the graduation from university of daughter Jessica, 21.

She said: "It means there is not as much pressure on my husband and I financially any more.

"I can afford to do theatre now. I'd love to be in a West End play, something completely different.

"I'd also like to spend a few months travelling round India with my husband Kit."

Trudie is encouraged by more roles being offered to older women.

She said: "This industry is finally opening up to older women.

"It really used to be so difficult for females to find work over the age of 30.

"But it's not as hard any more. Helen Mirren is a particular inspiration to me - she looks fantastic. And the fact that there are more opportunities available to women our age gives me more motivation to leave The Bill.

"I love the idea of being an older #### symbol."

Trudie admitted she no longer enjoys filming like she used to, saying: "I miss my old friends from the show.

"There were only nine of us in the cast to begin with and we bonded.

"We'd go to the pub after filming every day. It's not the same any more.

"We're working 12-hour days now and simply don't have time to socialise as much after work.

"I don't enjoy it as much as I once did, to be perfectly honest. It's not as much fun now."

Trudie has a minor part in tonight's hour-long live episode, which promises to be a stunt- filled special in which Sun Hill is held under siege.

Cheers Suze. Why does she have to have an explosive exit. I thought with the departure of Herr Marquess that maybe she could just have an ordinary exit. Would it not be nice for her to team up with Jimbo again and live happily ever after. After all she has been through with the Chimp and her rape you would think she deserves some happiness. Long live the blessed St. June of Sun Hill

On GMTV this morning Bruce Byron and Kim Tiddy were on the sofa and were asked about the article and they both said it was untrue and that Trudie Goodwin wasn't leaving. Apparently, according to them, it was an interview that was chopped up and put back together giving a different picture altogether, so who knows!!

Hello I have just seen The Sun newspaper today (Friday 23rd September 2005) and on page 20 it says the following: -

"Sgt June stays on

The Bill star Trudie Goodwin yesterday strongly denied claims she is quitting the show.

Trudie 53, who plays Sgt June Ackland, was reported to be leaving after 21 years on the ITV 1 cop drama.

But the actress - the last member of the original cast - said: "I have no immediate plans to leave the The Bill."

"In fact, I am about to renew my contract and am very happy."

Amber is ok but realistically she is not a long term character!! I would hate for them to start digging in her priavte life and family n stuff it just wouldnt suit the character i imagine her having a simple ending like she meets a dude whos rich and goes of to live with him or summat along those lines!!

According to todays Sun newspaper Trudie Goodwin who plays Sgt. June Ackland is quiting The Bill at the end of the year when her contract finishes. Her departure will see the last of the original cat members leave the show. ITV ar trying to come up with a suitable storyline for her departure.

Lets all hope its a worthwhile one instead of some of the recent tripe we have had during the Marquess era.

aww, she's been through so much and had so many good storylines that it'll be sad to see her go, especially as she is the last of the original cast

My mouth dropped to the ground when i read this article on Digital Spy. I can't believe June is leaving! There will be no more original cast members left after she leaves. It is a shame she is leaving but she has had some good storylines over the years. Let's just hope her exit storyline will not let her down :)

Report from digital spy in case anyone is interested

Trudie Goodwin has decided to quit The Bill after almost 23 years, Digital Spy can confirm.

The actress, who has played Sgt June Ackland since its pilot in 1983, is the only original cast member still remaining on the show.

Speculation over her exit has been rife for some time but rumours appeared to be quashed recently when she signed a one-year contract extension.

“Trudie has been thinking for a while about leaving The Bill and has finally made the difficult decision," a source told The Sun today. “She has signed a new contract which takes her up to the end of the year, but has told producers it will be her last.

“She’d like them to come up with a real slow-burner of a plot leading to her exit. They’re in talks now. It promises to be absolutely huge.”

So it looks like Trudie has changed her mind about staying on an every now and then basis. Last interview I saw Trudie said that they were just runours and she wasn't leaving the Bill, but was going to take time out to do other things. If this is ture then it is sad, but obviously it will be what Trudie wants so I will be happy for her.

its a real shame to see june akland go...she has been one of the strongest characters in the show's history and a credit to the show.

being a long time fan of the bill it is clear that these days the characters are not in the same calibre as polly page, june akland, jim carver, don beech (aplogises for spelling). so its sad to hear that Trudie Goodwin is going, one of the few gems left, to be replaced with another peice of "totty" with as much acting talent as the likes of Nigel Harman.

pookie1968uk

that is so true, when a strong character leaves they are just being replaced with weak characters. there is nothing strong or long lasting about any of the recruits we've seen recently.

I hope she isn't killed off. After 23 years in the show, the character doesn't deserve to be killed off.
