It's moving day for Trey. Before heading out with his single bag of possessions, Trey offers Ryan a sincere apology for the yard sale debacle... which is not exactly well received.

At school, Marissa and Seth try talking Ryan into taking a housewarming gift over to Trey's new place, but Ryan demands that they stay out of it.

Carter congratulates Kirsten on being a bona fide magazine publisher. She's excited about the magazine hitting the stands that morning, but that's not what Carter's talking about. He's referring to their first libel suit which has already been brought against them by a guy who didn't like the profile they ran on him. Kirsten thinks her bigger problem is breaking the news to Julie that her picture got taken off the cover.

Seth and Zach share their excitement about the upcoming meeting with Carter's ex-assistant and current graphic novel company executive... until Summer overhears the conversation. Seth promises her full disclosure in the future but Summer claims not to want to know anything about it ever again.

Carter shows up at Sandy's office and solicits him to help out on their libel suit. Sandy's impressed that the magazine's only been on the newsstands a few hours and there's already a suit. Count him in. They can talk about the case while surfing tomorrow.

Marissa stops by Trey's with a housewarming lava lamp and discovers Trey's birthday is this Saturday. Next, she stops by the Cohen's and suggests to Ryan that they throw him a birthday party. Ryan is still not in a celebratory mood. He tells her in no uncertain terms to stop pushing it.

On the beach, Sandy introduces Carter to Erin, an attractive orthopedic doctor/excellent surfer.

Seth and Zach debrief on their meeting with Reed, who is not only a comic book lover but a beautiful female comic book lover. A rivalry breaks out between them. After a chat with Marissa, Summer realizes she needs to suck it up and at least feign interest in comic books since they're so important to Seth. Except, ironically, now that Reed's entered the picture, Seth isn't so eager to include her.

Julie pays Lance a visit at his sleazy motel room and proceeds to pull a gun on him. She explains that in one night he destroyed a life she took 20 years build, and now she's going to kill him. Turns out there were no bullets in the gun but at least for one moment he knew what it felt like to have his life taken away from him.

Sandy reports back to Kirsten about his morning surfing with Carter, and mentions that they ran into Erin on the beach and he definitely thinks he saw sparks fly between them. He suggests a double date. Kirsten looks less than thrilled.

After some convincing, Ryan agrees to make a quick stop by at Trey's place to wish him a happy birthday. When he and Seth arrive, they see Trey leaving his place, getting into an old Camaro with a guy they've never seen before. Ryan instructs Seth to follow him and they head into a dark alley where Trey hands some cash over to a scruffy-looking guy.

The next day, Ryan pounds on Trey's door and accuses him of buying drugs. Turns out the guy driving the Camaro was Trey's parole officer and they were visiting a buddy of Trey's from prison who had disappeared. He gave the guy five bucks because he was living out of trash cans. Ryan goes back to Marissa and apologizes for being so hard on her.

Seth, who can't stand the thought of Reed liking Zach better, schedules a meeting with her at a diner and conveniently forgets to tell Zach about it. At the meeting, he proceeds to badmouth Zach.

Marissa stops by Trey's and announces she's taking him out for his birthday. But first they have to stop by the Nichol mansion because Marissa forgot her wallet. SURPRISE! The gang's there waiting for him.

Double date at the Cohen's. It appears Kirsten needs a little extra wine to get through the night.

After receiving an envelope with one porn tape and a note suggesting there are more where that came from, Julie heads to a bar to meet Lance. Julie assumes Lance got the half million from Caleb but Lance swears he didn't get a penny. He just got beat up. Then he apologizes for the launch party viewing, and explains that he didn't mean to hurt her; but after what Caleb did, he just couldn't help himself.

It appears that word of the party at the Nichol's mansion has gotten out, and a crowd starts steaming in. Among the arrivals are Zach and Reed. Seth is clearly not happy about this turn of events. The party gets a little wild and Seth practically gets beat up by a water polo dude when Trey intervenes and saves him. Deja Vu. This act of valor wins him the attention of a hot blonde who invites him into the house and out of the sightlines of her boyfriend.

In another turn of events, Julie and Lance appear to be having a great time reminiscing about the old days. He convinces her to stay for one more drink.

At the now raging party, Summer runs into Reed in the bathroom and discovers she's the graphic novel executive Seth was meeting with. Summer tells off Seth then takes off. Meanwhile, Marissa and Ryan end up in her bedroom where a kiss is inches away when suddenly they hear a girl's curdling scream! Someone's floating in the pool. Not just someone, the girl Trey hooked up with.

Back at the double date, Kirsten and Erin clear the table and Kirsten gives Erin a friendly warning about Carter. His divorce wounds are still raw. Just thought you should know.

Sandy and the cops arrive on the scene of the party. The cops found a bag of ecstasy and they're going to have to take Marissa in until they discover who's responsible for bringing it into the house. Just then, Trey steps in and confesses. He claims he gave the girl the drugs. Sandy tells him not to say another word. The cops read Trey his rights and take him away.
