EASTENDERS is to make TV history by featuring a two-minute silence during a special Armistice Day episode.

The scene was so emotional that Shane Richie and Hilda Braid, the only actors involved, ended in “floods of tears”.

The pair, who play Alfie and his gran Nana Moon, are filmed in Normandy, France, visiting the spot where her husband was killed in World War Two.

The episode — to be aired on Armistice Day (November 11) — will be the first time a soap has featured the silence.

A BBC insider said: “We decided to mark Armistice Day this year because it’s such an important day.

“We thought Shane and Hilda would be brilliant.

“They are both involved in a lot of comedy plots, but they are great serious actors when given the chance.

“Their talent really shines in this episode. They were moved to tears.”

I think this is great. Really looking forward to this episode,as I think Nana Moon is great. There is also a great on screen chemistry between Hilda and Shane. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!

sounds good... nana moons last decent storyline before she dies! and a chance for alfie to redeem himself with us eastenders fans, but the fact hes getting back with kat has none doubt improved his chances of forgivness

If only Shane Richie would prolong his 2 minute silence by 23 hours and 58 minutes.

I think that this is a very good idea to include armistice day or poppy day as known by most.every soap covers differant issues drugs, rape etc. But this is good thinking by the writters in this the 60th year anniversary. People these days seem to forget the two minutes silence on the 11th at 11.(I know it won't be at 11 but they are making a good point).

Maybe EE bosses will bring in Michael Foot as a special guest, complete with Donkey Jacket, to mark the occasion.

[this will only mean a thing to more senior members of this forum :)]

Yes, just about. He's the oldest living party leader still alive atm, though that does not say much because apart from Mrs Thatcher, the others are all under 65. Apart from ex-Chancellor Lord Healey (88), all his political aides in the Labour party are all long dead. I think if he hangs on for another year, he will succeed his predecessor as Labour leader, Jim Callaghan, as the oldest ever living party leader.

Foot was a nutcase in terms of his politics, and as a result nearly killed off the Labour party. Compare modern Labour under Blair to Labour under Foot - not the largest of timescales, and the difference is huge.

I think it will be a really nice episode, no doubt bringing a lump to the throat too, I'm sure they will do it really well.

Me too the writers should not have given Shane Ritchie this ridicoulous stoyryline with Mofie and Kalfie they should have given him more suitable storylines, like this one of november the 11th.

Ok let me get this right Alfie is taking Nana Moon to Normandy to see where William "died" ok that much I understand, but is this going to be an EE nite as well, or is it just focused on their journey to Normandy.. normally if they go to location, for some reason actors do better ( Hilda and Shane might surprise us all ):searchme:

I'm guessing that there will be silence for 2 mins, but we will see them walking up to or looking around the area that William was supposed to have died. It could be a really moving scene if done well!
