EastEnders pulled ahead of Coronation Street for the first time in months last night, according to early ratings figures.
The BBC soap has seen its audiences restored to a respectable level over the past week with a storyline involving the discovery of Dirty Den's body underneath the Queen Vic.
Yesterday's episode averaged 10.68 million viewers, a 49.4% share of the audience, with a first place ranking for the day.
Coronation Street followed with respective audiences of 10.3 million (50.4%) and 9.31 million (39.8%) for its 7.30pm and 8.30pm episodes. Emmerdale took fourth with 7.9 million (42.3%).
The first half of ITV's new mystery drama Marian, Again put in a strong performance, averaging 6.32 million (28.8%) between 9pm and 10.30pm. On BBC One, feature length aquatic documentary Deep Blue held a respectable 4.65 million (20.4%).
Channel 4 hit a high point of 2.78 million (12.4%) for documentary The Man Who Predicted 9/11 in the 9pm hour. A late night Hollyoaks pulled in around half the audience of its teatime edition, averaging 1.08 million (10.1%) from 11pm.
Amongst the multichannels, ITV2 had a strong night thanks to the launch of the heavily-touted US version of Hell's Kitchen at 9pm. Fronted by Gordon Ramsay, the show pulled in an average of 853,000 (5.4%) to rank number one for the day.
Also faring well was E4, which picked up audiences of 340,000 (2.3%) for the romcom She's All That (9pm - 10.55pm) and 387,000 (3.1%) for a first-run Hollyoaks.
Elsewhere, Living TV put in solid performances with new episodes of Grey's Anatomy (186,000, 1.4%) and CSI (194,000, 2.9%), while on Sky One, the launch of Cruise With Stelios interested 204,000 (1.3%).
