An Emmerdale star is joining Waterloo Road on the upcoming series set to premiere in 2026 ? and their arrival may upend Nicky Walters' career.
Karl Davies, known for playing the role of Robert Sugden between 2001 and 2009 on the ITV soap, is now set to play Anthony Walters, Nicky's ex-husband, on the BBC title.
In the upcoming episodes, Anthony takes a job as the school's girls' football coach, with his presence upsetting Nicky and their daughter Tonya just as Kym Marsh's character has taken on a new role at the school.
The BBC confirmed the new season will kick off on 6 January 2026 with a double bill, while the entire season will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
The 17th season will see new Deputy Darius (Jon Richardson) be in charge as excluded students and familiar faces return to Waterloo Road.
The synopsis teases "love is in the air" for staff and students as prom and a wedding are on the horizon.
More newcomers will be joining Davies in the new year, as Waterloo Road is set to welcome a host of new students: Freddy Smith as Freddie Hollister, Olivia Booth-Ford as Leoni Tennant, Myra-Sofia Iftikhar as Aisha Azzi, Sana Ali as Badr Azzi, and Isha Kaur as Harleen Lamba.
Meanwhile, it was previously announced that Denise Welch is reprising her role as Steph Haydock.
"I'm thrilled to see the return of Steph to Waterloo Road," Welch said about her return as Steph, explaining she will cross paths with Jason Merrells, who reprises the role of Jack Rimmer.
"15 years older, but certainly not wiser. She'll soon show that time has certainly not dulled her shine! Still unmarried but eternally hopeful, Steph is back as a supply teacher. What she is supplying remains to be seen, but I am having a great time stepping back into the shoes of a character I love.
"It's also been great to reunite with some of my old castmates, like Jason Merrells. Steph and Jack go back a long way, but will they move forward?! You'll have to wait and see."
