EastEnders star Barbara Windsor contemplated death at the lowest point of her battle against the Epstein-Barr virus.
"At one point I thought I'd had a great life and prayed that if I went to sleep I wouldn't wake up," Windsor told The People.
The actress, who was forced to leave the soap after falling ill, returns to screens this week as Peggy Mitchell.
After taking time out for rest and recovery, Barbara spent £14,000 on a necklift, commenting at the time, "I look and feel like a woman in her 50s. I can swap my Bridget Jones big pants for more flattering underwear and I'm really excited about making my comeback on EastEnders."
