"The Long Goodbye
Irene Makes A Huge Call About Her Future - But Not Everyone Is On Board

While Home and Away fans are readying to say goodbye to Irene Roberts, they're faced with another twist in the story this week, when she announces she's leaving Summer Bay. But how?

In recent episodes Irene (Lynne McGranger) has shared her heart-breaking Alzheimer's diagnosis with the Summer Bay community. But, as everyone rallies around her, she's busy making plans for her future. So far, she has signed over her share of the Diner to Leah (Ada Nicodemou) and now she's preparing to leave her old life behind to travel the world.

"She wants to use her situation, the money she has and the time she has left, to live the rest of her life the best she can," Lynne, 72, tells TV WEEK of her character's decision.

Unfortunately, her brilliant idea isn't well received by her friends Leah, Alf (Ray Meagher) and John (Shane Withington), who worry about her eagerness to jump into a situation unprepared. But, when they ambush her, fearful for her safety, Irene stands her ground...her friends can either support her or step aside. The group are bewildered, but Ada can understand.

"This is her diagnosis, and this is how she can make the most of a sad situation," Ada explains. "It's a positive outlook, considering."

The following day John arrives as Irene is showing her house to a Real Estate Agent. While he tries to keep his cool, John can't help himself and explodes, claiming Irene is using this as a way to ignore the world and her problems. But Irene is resolute: she has clarity now and if she waits it could all be too late. Later that day, Irene looks around at her home, reflecting on the memories she's made and who will make them here in the future.

"Now she's accepted her diagnosis, memories and flashbacks are flooding back," Lynne says.

The following day Irene is greeted by Leah, who announces that she, along with Alf and John, will help her plan her trip. All she has to do is pick the locations. It's a heartfelt moment of two best friends realising they're no longer going to be in each other's lives.

With tears and laughter the friends plan Irene's trip together, and count down her final days in Summer Bay... "
