"Forget Me Not
Irene Takes Steps To Deal With Her Diagnosis
The devastating truth about Irene is finally out. And as friends rally around her this week, Irene makes the brave decision to sell her half of the Diner.
In emotional scenes on Home and Away, Irene (Lynne McGranger) and John (Shane Withington) have returned to Summer Bay with heavy hearts after the neurologist confirmed her fear: she has Alzheimer's.
"Worst-case scenario happens which is absolutely devastating," Lynne, 72, tells TV WEEK. The rehabilitating disease, which is a common type of dementia, has already impacted Irene's memory and behaviour - and now, it'll only get worse.
"This is her diagnosis but it's never the same journey for everyone," Lynne says. "Things start to compound and while most of the time there's clarity, there are other moments when she isn't herself."
At the doctor's suggestion, John discusses the idea of telling friends and family. But Irene cuts him off - she's not ready. That night, however, she contemplates her future, looking around at the framed pictures of loved ones. One by one, she takes out the photos and lays them on the table. As she relives some of her greatest memories, Irene ensures she writes as much detail as she can on the back of the photograph - a reminder of who they are.
"Once she realises what's going on and accepts it, there's a lot of reminiscing," Lynne explains. "She doesn't want to forget who they are. The audience will really feel it in those scenes but it's such a beautiful moment."
In public, Irene remains coy about her visit to the doctor's. Leah (Ada Nicodemou) and Marilyn (Emily Symons) can tell something is up with their friend but are shut down at the slightest mention of it. But her barriers can only hold for so long, and in a tearful moment with her best friend, Leah, Irene delivers the devastating news about her Alzheimer's. As Leah tries to gather her emotions, Irene drops another bombshell: she wants to sell her share of the Diner. It's time to let go while she's still of sound mind.
"It was an incredibly rich and difficult scene to film. We couldn't stop crying!" Lynne says of filming alongside Ada.

In The Past
David And Lacey Wrestle With Memories
Without her mum, Lacey has been lost, and her relationship to her father, David, is more strained than ever. As the pair face the past together, the thought of what they've lost is too much to bear.
This week, David (Jeremy Lindsay Taylor) visits Lacey (Sophea Pennington) and Theo (Matt Evans) with a suitcase in hand. At first, the couple fear he's leaving town, but on close inspection, Lacey realises it's hers.
David reveals he's sold their home and inside the suitcase are some childhood belongings. Lacey is overwhelmed and angry at her father for not consulting her - and while he explains that the house holds too many memories of his late wife, Lacey now has very little left of the past to hold onto.
While it's tough to take, could this change help Lacey move on? Or will she spiral further? "
