Soap veteran Elizabeth Sladen is set to make a return to Doctor Who.

The Liverpool-born actress played Anita Reynolds in Coronation Street back in 1970 before landing the part of Sarah Jane Smith in the cult series four years later.

She stayed with the BBC sci-fi saga for three years, and reprised her role in 1981 spin-off, K-9 and Company.

"I am so thrilled to be back and I feel so empowered by the affection that (the whole team) have for Sarah Jane Smith and for the programme," she remarked recently.

Sladen and much-loved robot dog K-9 recently started filming on the new series, alongside the latest Doctor, David Tennant.

The old friends will prove invaluable as everyone's favourite Time Lord, Rose (Billie Piper) and Mickey (Noel Clarke) take on the evil Krillitanes.

That episode airs next spring and also sees the team investigate disturbing events at a contemporary comprehensive school.

Little Britain's Anthony Head will be among the guest stars for the 2006 series.

Sladen, 57, is just one of several soap stars who has joined the Doctor on his travels over the years.

Emmerdale's Frazer Hines was Jamie McCrimmon between 1966 and 1969; Corrie's Helen Worth (Gail) portrayed Mary Ashe in 1971 episode Colony in Space; Brookside's Mary Tamm (Penny Crosbie) played the first incarnation of Romana between 1978 and 1979; and earlier this year Bruno Langley (Todd Grimshaw) appeared as Adam Mitchell in the episodes Dalek and The Long Game.
