Regulus Arcturus Black

To the Dark Lord
I now I will be dead long before you read this but I want you to know that it was I who discovered your secret. I have stolen the real Horcrux and intend to destroy it as soon as I can.
I face death in the hope that when you meet your match you will be mortal once more.
R.A.B.
(HBP28)

Born: 1961?
Died: 1980

Regulus was the younger brother of Sirius Black. Regulus was favored by his parents because he shared their pureblood prejudices; soon after leaving Hogwarts, he joined the Death Eaters.

He is the mysterious 'R.A.B.' who stole the locket Horcrux. Regulus' middle name and the fact that he is the infamous 'R.A.B.' were confirmed by a well-placed source 28 August, 2005.

Panic or resolve?
According to Sirius, "he [Regulus] got in so far, then panicked about what he was being asked to do, and tried to back out. Well, you don't just hand in your resignation to Voldemort. It's a lifetime of service or death" (OP6). Sirius believed that Voldemort had Regulus killed sometime during 1980 (the same year the prophecy was made and Harry was born). However, it appears that Regulus did more than panic -- he actually tried to weaken Voldemort by destroying one of his Horcruxes, even though he knew that it endangered his life.

When it was revealed that Regulus was "R.A.B.," this answered one of the questions we all had after reading Book 6, but it raised even more:

* What turned Regulus against Voldemort?
* How did Regulus find out about the Horcruxes?
* How did he know one was hidden in the cave?
* Who killed Regulus? Did Voldemort find out that the Horcrux was destroyed, or was Regulus killed for some other reason?
* Where is the locket now?

NAME MEANING
Regulus = 'the little king'; a star in Leo. Regulus was also the family name of Marcus Atilius Regulus, a famous Roman patriot/martyr who was tortured to death (CE).

Arcturus='bear watcher,' the Alpha star of the constellation Boötis (the Herdsman). It is the fourth brightest star of the entire sky, following only Sirius, Canopus, and Alpha Centauri. [EB]

Ancestry: Pure Blood.
Family in general: "The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black" dating to at least the Middle Ages (OP6); descendent of Phineas Nigellus Black, a Hogwarts Headmaster. Parents convinced that to be a 'Black' made you "practically royal."
Mother: Died 1987; her portrait is permanently mounted in the hallway of the Black family home.
Father: Unnamed wizard who heavily fortified the family home at 12 Grimmauld Place, London.
Grandparents: Grandfather Black who was awarded Order of Merlin 1st Class for "Services to the Ministry") (OP6).
Aunts, Uncles: Uncle Alphard, who left Sirius money and Aunt Elladora who started the tradition of beheading house-elves when they were too old to carry tea trays.

He was the one that I have seen mentioned before, and I posted the name a while back. It is really interesting to see all the background, and like you say still more questions arise!
