Des Lynam has admitted that he is nervous over the possibility of taking over as the presenter of Countdown.
The former Match of the Day host faces a live audition this week, with comic Paul Merton also being considered.
Long-standing host Richard Whiteley died in June at the age of 61, after undergoing heart surgery.
"Richard is a hard act to follow," Lynam told The Mirror. "I phoned Carol [Vorderman] to see how she felt about it and she said: 'Go for it'."
