It appears that Neighbours has been axed again/not renewed by Amazon, with final episodes to air later this year.....

SOAP SHOCK Neighbours axed AGAIN as Amazon pulls plug on Australian soap?s revival after two years
The soap was previously axed after 37 years only to be brought back by Amazon

https://www.thesun.co.uk/tv/33479098/neighbours-axed-again-amazon-two-years/

NEIGHBOURS is being axed again - after production company Fremantle failed to agree a new deal with Amazon.

The beloved Australian soap will stop production this summer with the final ever episode being aired at the end of the year, The Sun can exclusively reveal.

It is just two years since Amazon brought the soap back to life after it was axed by Channel 5 after 37 years.

Amazon announced at the end of 2022 that it was bringing the iconic programme back in a multi-year deal.

The soap's final episode saw the return of the likes of Margot Robbie, Kylie Minogue and Guy Pearce in the emotional goodbye.

But months later, Amazon offered the show a lifeline and brought it back to life with a revamped production.

It started filming in 2023 and was shown on Amazon Freevee worldwide.

However, last year Amazon axed the service and folded it into its Prime Video streaming offering.

And now, after two years streaming, the show will come to an end once more.

The Sun can exclusively reveal that Amazon have told Fremantle that their venture into soaps hasn?t worked and they are pulling funding.

A source said: ?Amazon gave Fremantle two years to see if it worked but sadly they just didn?t get the viewers.

?It?s a really sad day especially for the cast and crew who work on the show in Melbourne.

?This really is the end of Neighbours just as it?s celebrated it?s 40th birthday.?

It is not known whether the cast and crew have been told about the development.

The revival was nominated for its first two Emmy Awards last year for best daytime drama series and best guest performance for Guy Pearce.

Neighbours was first shown on BBC1 in 1986, a year after its Australian debut.

Nearly 20million UK viewers tuned in two years later to see Scott, played by Jason Donovan, and Charlene, played by Kylie, get wed.

Amazon has been contacted for comment.

Neighbours axe is a warning to all other soaps
The Sun's Soaps Editor Carl Greenwood reveals why soap fans should be very nervous about Amazon axing Neighbours. NEIGHBOURS revival sent shockwaves through the TV industry back in 2022 when Amazon swooped in to save the beloved soap. After 37 years it had become victim of an increasingly expensive and hostile TV industry when Channel 5 pulled the plug. Budgets had spiralled out of control and there was a ?5m hole in production costs that the UK channel couldn?t justify spending. Now it seems Amazon, the multi-billion dollar company has learned the same lesson. Spiralling costs are making it more and more difficult for shows - especially soaps that produce a huge number of episodes - to continue to go on. If even Amazon with its mountains of money are struggling - what hope is there for the rest of the industry? Soap fans should be incredibly concerned about the crisis enveloping their favourite shows. Hollyoaks has already slashed its episodes by 40 per cent, now airing just three times per week. ITV have taken the decision to cut an episode per week of Emmerdale and Coronation Street starting next year. The only one that appears safe is EastEnders with its significant licence fee money budget - but in this economy, how long will that last? One thing is clear - the industry has to get a grip on this crisis because there?s no big money streamer coming to save the day anymore.

Axed: ?Neighbours will be missed by fans? as show confirms the end
Cast and crew were given sad news this morning , that without a broadcast partner long-running 10 series will end later this year.

https://tvtonight.com.au/2025/02/axed-neighbours-will-be-missed-by-fans-as-show-confirms-the-end.html

Neighbours will cease production mid year as Australia?s longest-running drama.

It will be the third time the much-loved soap has been axed, initially by Seven in 1985, then 10 in 2022 after Britain?s Channel 5 pulled funding.

?now a third time after Amazon made a change in its commission direction.

Without a viable broadcast partner, 10 is unable to continue the series on its own.

TV Tonight understands cast and crew were due to be told the news at their Nunawading production site today. But British tabloid The Sun got wind of the news overnight upstaging those plans, with cast and crew subsequently told this morning.

The sad news comes ahead of the show?s 40th anniversary in March. While there are no event plans in place for that occasion the team under executive producer Jason Herbison will celebrate it through storylines and the return of familiar faces.

Neighbours has actually been successful on Freevee, but Amazon axed the platform itself late last year, moving the soap to Prime Video. During that time the execs who had originally championed the recommission had also gone, with a change of direction under the new regime.

Fremantle Media statement:
Jason Herbison, Neighbours Executive Producer said: ?Audiences all around the world have loved and embraced Neighbours for four decades and we are very proud of the huge success over the last two years including often appearing as one of the Top 10 titles in the UK and the show?s first ever Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Daytime Series in 2024. As this chapter closes, we appreciate and thank Amazon MGM Studios for all that they have done for Neighbours ? bringing this iconic and much-loved series to new audiences globally. We value how much the fans love Neighbours and we believe there are more stories of the residents of Ramsay Street to tell in the future.?

Network 10 statement:
Fremantle Australia, the producers of Neighbours and production partner Amazon have advised Network 10 that production of the show will end in July this year, with the last episode airing in December 2025.

A Network 10 spokesperson thanked the cast, crew, all the production team and Fremantle for everything they had done to bring the perfect blend of soap and sunshine to audiences in Australia and around the world. Network 10 also extended its thanks to the Australian fans and audiences for their continued support of the series.

?We are grateful to all those who worked so hard to keep Neighbours on air for more than 400 episodes,? the spokesperson said.

?It is a mighty achievement that the series will reach the 40-year milestone next month. The program will be missed by the fans and the people who have been part of this amazing journey. We wish them well.?

Amazon statement:
?Neighbours has brought so much joy over the last 40 years to its fanbase globally and in the UK. Forty years is an incredible milestone and we are proud that Amazon MGM Studios was able to have a small part of bringing further episodes to Freevee and Prime Video customers over the last two years, spanning over 400 episodes.?

? Beloved Australian daily-drama Neighbours will come to an end on Prime Video After Hitting its 40th Year.
? Prime Video will air new Neighbours episodes 4-times a week, until end of December 2025.
? The show will officially celebrate its 40th anniversary this March, with a special week of episodes dedicated to storylines and characters, new and old.
? Fans can continue to watch the series on Prime Video.

Earlier:

British taboild The Sun is today reporting Neighbours is ?being axed again ? after production company Fremantle failed to agree a new deal with Amazon.?

It suggests production will finish in winter with the final episode to screen at the end of the year.

The information is yet to be confirmed.

While Neighbours has been very successful for the Freevee the plaform itself shut down in November with the soap moving to Prime Video in the UK. Executive changes also meant the show moved under a new regime since its recommission. In TV there are changes of direction and management changes impacting production all the time?.

In January Dan Monaghan, Senior Vice President Content & Programming told TV Tonight, ?The episodes that we?ve got take us all the way almost to November.

?We?ve got almost a full year to get through. Obviously, we?d have to have conversations with them prior to that, but it?s a co-commission as you know with Amazon.?

In March the show will celebrate its 40th anniversary through special storylines under producer Jason Herbison.

Neighbours' last episode: What fans can expect from the emotional farewell
The show's boss has suggested the ending will be "a little bit" different to last time.

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a63865317/neighbours-last-episode-what-fans-expect/

Neighbours boss Jason Herbison has teased what fans can expect from the show's farewell.

Yesterday it was confirmed that the Australian soap had been axed for a second time after Amazon ? who picked up the soap in 2022 after its initial cancellation ? decided not to give it a long-term renewal deal.

Following the show's initial farewell over two years ago, Herbison has revealed in a new interview that its final episode later this year may be "a little bit" different.

Asked about facing saying goodbye again, he quipped to 10 News First: "I've had that question a few times today. My response is, 'Give me a minute'. It's all very new.

"I'm not sure," Herbison reflected. "I certainly wouldn't want to repeat myself ? that was a great finale, I loved writing that episode. It was incredible that everyone came back for it. I don't know, I think this time around it would be a little bit of a different tone.

"But just as we said before, we were resting the show, we do see Neighbours as eternal. Who knows about the future? So I think whatever ending, it will be a door left open kind of ending again."

The axing comes just weeks before the show's 40th anniversary, and the executive producer also touched on their celebration plans ? including past stars coming back.

"It's really a very big week that celebrates what Neighbours is," he said. "Obviously we love nostalgia, we love an excuse to bring back the odd returnee."

He further promised "some characters coming back that haven't been back before", before teasing one particular comeback.

"There's actually someone on set today that hasn't been back for a very long time, so that's a little bit of a hook for even further on into the year," he added. "The person who's back on set today we're all very excited by."

Neighbours was brought back to screens via Amazon's Freevee service in September 2023, commissioned for an initial run of two years.

However, the strategy changed after Amazon phased out Freevee, and despite its popularity on Prime Video in the UK, the soap wasn't able to be saved.

Neighbours releases new episodes from Mondays to Thursdays for free on Amazon Freevee and Prime Video in the UK and US. In Australia, the show airs from Mondays to Thursdays at 4pm on Channel 10, with a 6.30pm repeat screening on 10 Peach Comedy.

The only way Neighbours survives if channel 10 launch their own streaming service, $15 a month and if the fans want the show saved they need to pay. Then it’s pretty much reliant on the fans. If they produce crap like they have, fans unsubscribe and the show ends.

After 40 extraordinary years, Australia celebrates its longest-running and dearly loved soap, Neighbours
Happy 40th birthday!

https://www.nowtolove.com.au/entertainment/neighbours-40-year-anniversary/

It's a series woven into the fabric of Australia's identity, that has stolen the hearts of many across the world. But sadly, after 40 years, Neighbours has officially called it quits - again.

While it is incredibly bittersweet to farewell the iconic series, its 40th anniversary marks a huge milestone to be celebrated for the talent it has produced and the fans it has impacted.

TV WEEK speaks exclusively with Alan Fletcher and Jackie Woodburne - who play Dr Karl and Susan Kennedy
- about how the news has affected them.

"The first time the show was cancelled it was utter devastation," Jackie, 69, recalls of the series initially getting the axe in 2021, before its surprise renewal in 2023. "The second time we were a bit more prepared - but it's still very sad for all of us."

Married couple Susan and Karl moved to Ramsay Street, Erinsborough in 1994, with the actors having appeared on our screens for 30 years and sharing a wide range of memorable storylines together
- from poetic to downright ridiculous.

"Susan having a relationship with a Catholic priest and defrocking him - I really had to dig deep for that one," Jackie jokes. "I thought that might've been a bridge too far, but I got through it."

"For me, it was Susan's amnesia," Alan, 67, adds. "Jackie was presented with an enormous challenge where she had to play Susan as not remembering anything after the age of 16 but having to deal with the fact that she is apparently married.
It was a delicate, sensitive story.

"It gave us an opportunity as Karl and Susan to almost fall back in love with each other again, which culminated in Karl and Susan renewing their vows and Susan remembering her original wedding vows at that ceremony. It was a very poignant, beautiful story."

Executive producer and former series writer Jason Herbison, 54, wants to ensure those storylines are remembered in a unique way in the celebratory final year of Neighbours.

"While nostalgia is always part of our celebration, this time around we wanted to tip our hat to the storytelling themes of the past four decades," Jason tells TV WEEK. "The big classic twists and turns that the viewers love."

Neighbours is not just known for its creative story arcs, but also for producing some of the country's biggest stars, with Alan declaring the series the 'best classroom for television'.

"We've worked with Margot Robbie, Kylie [Minogue], Jesse Spencer," Alan lists. "These people who have gone on to the world stage. But you've also got your Peter O'Briens and Ben Lawsons, who are working in every country doing great work."

Cast member Hannah Monson, who joined the cast as Nicolette Stone in 2023, was simply grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the ride.

"You don't often get to say that you've worked on a show that's run for 40 years," the 32-year-old explains. "I just feel lucky I got to jump in on the tail end."

As for what the cast will do come July, when filming ceases, Jackie for one is looking forward to reading more books, while Alan will be straight off to the UK and Ireland touring as a musician, his other passion! Meanwhile, Hannah hopes to be floating in the idyllic blue waters
of Greece on a well-deserved holiday.

They all also happily declare that they have no intention of doing any 'reality gigs' any time soon.

"If they had a show called The Amazing Crawl, maybe," Alan teases, in reference to doing The Amazing Race.

"The Amazing Sit Down And Have A Cup Of Tea, I could do," Jackie jokes.

As for the iconic on-screen couple
that have gone through many ups and downs, working together so closely for three decades has made them dear friends, not simply colleagues.

"This has been our happy place for a very, very long time," Alan says. "We've had each other to fall on for 30 years. We have a lot to do with each other's lives."

"We will miss the daily opportunities to insult each other," Jackie adds with a laugh.

Another thing they will deeply miss
is the opportunity to connect with their fans around the world.

"I had a beautiful letter from a young man who genuinely said to me that Neighbours saved his life," Alan says. "He was suffering so much from mental illness until he saw what the characters were going through and he got help. That's
just one story, and it's one of many."

"You're working on something that is a very, very important element in a lot of people's lives", Jackie says. "That needs to be treated with respect and care. It's an honour to have been a part of that."
