Ok me and my mum had this theory about Jacks dad, that he wasnt actually dead, and there is a thing where people can appear dead, and their heart beat slows right down so it cant be felt but they are conscious and can see whats happening but cant move or anything. We think that happened and the shock of the crash brought him out of it. What do you guys think? :searchme:

If that is the case why on earth does he keep walking away from Jack? Why can Jack not catch up with him, and what has he been living on?

It is really weird!

I study biology and forensic science at uni, and I've never heard of this thing where you appear dead but arent really. sorry.... but your heart rate has to stay at a minimum level to keep you alive, im pretty sure if its so low its undetectable then your dead!!!! as if its that slow it wont be able to get the blood to the muscles where it is needed to keep you alive.

I think he is definately dead, although the island does seem to have some sort of "magical" feel to it, as locke get the feeling in his legs back..... but i dunno, im pretty confussed by the whole story so far. intreguing tho!!

Actually there is its called Catalepsy.

Catalepsy is a complete trance-like mental state, the symptoms are Rigid limbs, rigid body, limbs retain position when moved, no response or recognition and loss of voluntary muscle control, breathing rate is slowed down.

people can be brought out of these attacks by shaking them, sometimes!

it mentions nowhere that heartrate is reduced to an undetectable level.

but i could be looking in the wrong places!

There IS a condition where someone can appear dead. There's situations where people have been at their own funeral, about to be buried and suddenly got up and walked out of their coffin. No joke either!

The origin, I am told, of the phrase 'saved by the bell' comes from medievil times when so many people were found not to be dead then they were about to be buried that family members would set up a bell on a pole above the grave. This would be attached by string to the 'deceased's big toe. In the event that someone came to after being buried alive the bell would ring and they would be resued.

yeh but that was medevil times, things are a bit more hitech nowadays, you dont really hear of many stories on the news where the person is about to be buried and then just ups and walks out of the coffin.

Those people burried in those days were prolly like people now who are in comas and unresponsive sort of thing ...

I remember a story about that... A young girl 'died' of a diesease in the Victorian times, and she was buried in the family crypt. 25 years later, when her father died, they opened the crypt door and found a little skeleton sitting by it. :(

I think the Island brought him back to life somehow, it's easier that way.
