Carl is Kevin (Michael Le Vell) and Debbie’s (Sue Devaney) little brother. They have different mothers so he’s a bit younger than the aforementioned legends.

‘He comes into Weatherfield to ostensibly be with his brother because he’s found out he’s got cancer,’ said star Jonathan Howard. ‘But then we’ll discover Carl’s got some money issues back in Germany where he’s been living.’

Carl will make his debut in April, getting into a heated scrap with Abi (Sally Carman) over a car parking space – and sparks are set to fly between the two, despite Abi being in a relationship with our Kev.

Neither Abi nor Carl make the connection at first so just how will they get out of this one?

Coronation Street star Jonathan Howard has exclusively revealed to Inside Soap that Carl Webster?s difficult past is set to be explored. With the character proving to be a menace in Weatherfield, what does the future hold?

Viewers will remember that Carl reunited with his half-siblings, Kevin and Debbie, after leaving his home in Germany behind. Carl was born there to Bill and Elaine Webster, with Bill previously having welcomed Kevin and Debbie with Alison Webster.

Not long after his arrival in Weatherfield, Carl embarked on an affair with Kevin's wife, Abi, and started to swindle both Kevin and Debbie for cash.

First, Carl orchestrated a dodgy MOT scheme under Kevin?s nose at the garage, before conning Debbie into giving him control of the Chariot Square finances.

But still, actor Jonathan reckons that, deep down, Carl is yearning for the family he never had the chance to grow up with.

"Carl?s got a longing to belong, he wants to have a family," he told us at the 2025 Inside Soap Awards. "The way his relationship was with his parents, which is going to come out later on, his relationship with his mother ? he never felt that love off his mum."

"His brother and sister never really visited him. He?s had to grow up with a mum that didn?t really give that love or ignored him his whole life," continued the actor.

In recent scenes, Carl told a friend that he plans to return to Germany, despite making out to Abi that he is perfectly happy in their relationship. Again, it?s another instance of Carl?s habit for deceiving those that care for him.

So, it should come as no surprise that Jonathan is eager to explore Carl?s more sensitive side when given the chance.

"Every opportunity I get to show another side to Carl, I latch onto that," he says. "I don?t want him to be a bad, two-dimensional character, 'Oh, he?s just nasty and he?s evil.' He?s a guy who?s made bad decisions and is desperate. He grew up without the love he needed?"


Smacks of desperation to me to keep the character interesting ..
