Emmerdale has officially confirmed that Belle Dingle will be the character who pops the question in the show's Christmas episodes.

Belle springs a major surprise on her boyfriend Tom King after days of trying to plan the perfect festive proposal.

In the build-up to Christmas, Belle plots to propose to Tom but is disappointed when she keeps running into obstacles.

As Belle starts to lose hope, she's inspired when Chas encourages her to give the proposal another chance.

Just as Belle considers her options, Sam provides another unwanted interruption by dragging her away for a birthday surprise.

It's then left to local wedding planner Leyla Cavanagh to step in and help Belle form a new idea.

In scenes airing shortly after Christmas, Leyla leads a blindfolded Tom onto an ice rink.

Tom can't believe what he's seeing when Leyla removes the blindfold and reveals that Belle has arranged a proposal with the help of ice dancing legends Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean.

Tom, who's a huge fan of Torvill and Dean, is delighted by the gesture and says yes. He then enjoys meeting his idols when they skate over to say hello.

Dancing on Ice stars Torvill and Dean had their Emmerdale cameos announced last month, although details of which character would be proposing were kept under wraps at the time.

Christopher Dean commented: "It is amazing being here. We have jumped from watching Emmerdale on TV to being in a scene. From the screen to the scene. I'm loving it."

Jayne Torvill said: "I can't wait to watch the episode that we are going to be in. It will be surreal sitting at home watching it."

Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw added: "We are delighted to welcome Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean as our very special guests to Emmerdale. Torvill and Dean certainly promise to bring the Christmas magic sparkle to the show."

Belle and Tom's relationship took a dark turn earlier this year when an upsetting flashback showed Tom pushing Belle to the ground.

Belle was left bleeding as she hit her head, but when Tom apologised, she decided not to tell her family or friends what had happened.

At the time, fans speculated that this could be the start of an important issue-based storyline.

Laura Shaw previously said: "Belle and Tom are going to move on in their relationship. I think we've already hinted a little bit that there may be more going on in their relationship, but what we will see is them building their relationship.

"Wedding bells come in on Valentine's Day, of course, because we're a soap so we have to do weddings on Valentine's Day. But is it going to be their happy ever after? We'll have to see."

Emmerdale airs the proposal on Thursday, December 28 at 7pm on ITV1.

Elsewhere, a picture-perfect Christmas morning is spoiled when Marlon reaches breaking point with Gus and then storms off.
