Our sixth form at my school is really hard to get into. You have to get at least an A in your GCSEs in the subjects you want to study just to be accepted. That means that our sixth form is really REALLY brainy. When they get a 90-95% pass rate in our school, everyone assumes its either easier, everyone cheats, or its just a fluke, when it isn't. I'm expected mainly B's so i doubt i'll get in

Plus when they say on the tele that its a 97% pass rate, that means that 97% of people got between an A* and a G. According to the schools, yes a G is a pass. What they should say is how many people got between A* and a C, as this is what most people consider to be a pass, and is what an employer expects.

at the sixth forms in my area, you have to get at least 5 A* to C grades and at least a B in the subjects you want to do. and i agree, a pass is anything other than a fail so a G or higher is technically a pass, but most people dont consider anything lower than a C as a pass

bliming hell! they must have been well difficult then!

Imagine walking into a 3 hour exam with tough questions and the exam is going to test everything you have learnt in the past two years. Usually, no or very little courseowrk element ment most exams assessed you 100% by two 3 hour papers.

Either you knew your stuff or didn't. None of this everyone should be success crap.

dont be daft, you'll be fine i'm sure

yeh maybe, its just that although i did alright in my january ones, i missed loads of that work as i was in hospital and the school werent very good at giving me work to do, even though my parents went up there every day, so i was unable to catch up properly, even when i retook some of them again in june, i still didnt have all the work, so my grades prob arent going to be as good

AS Levels are the same level as Highers and A Levels are the equivalent of Advanced Highers.

That is not strictly true.

You can go to University with Higher only, you do not need Advanced Highers. It is true that Advanced Highers are more on par with A Levels, but AS levels are not on par with Highers.

I suppose that the truth is somewhere between? i.e GCSE/Standard Grade, then Intermediate 1, AS Level, Intermediate 2, Higher, A Level/Advanced Higher.

well done! :) did you find the biology units hard, cos i did?

hmmm, biology units varied.. the transport section was horrible though and the practical was pure evil, not enough time to do it all.

Find it really annoying that the media go on about how easy the exams are now... it doesn't seem like that to us. I found this year difficult. The step up from GCSE to AS level was tough in my opinion.

thanks! :) biology im a bit disappointed with but im pleased with the others, though id have liked an A in maths! yeh i do politics, not really sure why i chose it, its hard and boring and i hate both the teachers, ones a good teacher but hes really horrible and we are all terrified every lesson and the other teacher is rubbish at teaching us, i was going to give it up but looking at my result it looks like i should carry it on. funnily enough, i managed an A and a B in 2 of the papers but my grade was brought down cos i got an E in the other one! *urgh* typical, know all about those evil teachers.. had one for a few lessons in biology but that was enough... managed to get through them by glaring at the back of his head while he talked rubbish, grrr. A few pwople I know did the statistics exam, its waaay hard

i did the statistics exam last year, and i didnt think it was that hard. i only took it cos my maths teacher said that we could easily get a C just by revising the stuff we learnt for normal maths as that covers quite a bit of it anyway

Tori
27-08-2005, 18:02

di marco
28-08-2005, 08:51
yeah, it was in the telegraph yesterday. it was cases to support the case that gcses are getting easier

that doesnt mean that gcses are getting easier, it just means that some parents out there are so sad that they feel that they have to push a 7yr old into taking some gcses. these kids dont have any other life and its been proven that kids learn things better at a younger age, so imo, instead of proving that gcses are getting easier, it just shows that some little kid isnt having a proper childhood. yeh he may have a gcse at 7, so what? hes not going to be able to use it til hes older is he, so why not take it then instead and get the same result? and i bet he has no social skills or anything like that as his parents prob arent letting him do anything a normal 7yr old should be doing!
(rant over! sorry if i offended anyone!)

Trinity
28-08-2005, 09:22
Personally I think that some subjects are easier than they were. Maths is a case in point, in the 1970s there were no calculators and people had to do the whole paper with nothing more than a slide rule. The point is that it is easier, but pupils are still expected to know the principles behind the maths.

Other subjects didn't exist, or were not available at that level, so comparisions are not possible.

The main thing now is that 50% of kids are expected to go to Uni. Many subjects that previously didn't require a Uni course now do: and because of that many more people are sitting exams, staying on at school and trying their hardest to get the grades that they need to do the course they want.

If people want to slag off exam standards they shouldn't use the day that results are released to do it, the vast majority of kids have worked hard and don't deserve to have their achievements belittled.

i sort of agree and disagree with that point. as although you are allowed to use a calculator on one paper, on the other paper you arent. on the paper where you can use a calculator, most of the questions would be impossible to solve accurately without a calcualtor, especially in that space of time. if you havent learnt the equations to be able to answer the question, no matter if you have a calculator or not, then you wont be able to answer the question. also, as youre now able to use a calculator then that enables the examiners to make the questions harder

Dr. Tangliss

A 'sticky' is when Admin or Mods, stick the thread at the top of the forum, so it remains there for the duration, so it never slips down the forum. As for deleting posts, I have been unable to do so, but you can edit, at the bottom right of your post.

We sat those earlier this year. I got a 7 in maths and 6 in science, and we are still waiting for the english ones. It takes time because theres more to grade, there wasnt just one straight answer.

Of course, what i keep forgetting is that mine dont count towards anything beacuse im moving abroad i might even have to sit them again. I have no clue.
