The new series of TV talent show The X Factor was launched today with Simon Cowell vowing the judges would be leaving their egos at the door.

This year nearly 75,000 have entered the competition, the highest yet for a TV talent show.
It was won last year by Steve Brookstein.

The show has three categories - for 16-24-year-olds, 25s and over, and for groups. This year's contestants, who auditioned for the show, include a dairy farmer who dresses in drag, and a teenager with a voice which has been compared to Whitney Houston's.

Cowell, who famously rowed with fellow judges Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh, said: 'Last time we let our egos get in the way of the contestants. 'Of course we're going to be passionate about the artists but let's not let our egos get in the way of people entering the show.'
