View Full Version : Frank Butcher (Mike Reid) to make return
EastEnders comeback for Mike Reid
Actor Mike Reid is to return to the BBC soap EastEnders in December after three years away from the programme.
His character, used car dealer Frank Butcher, will appear in Albert Square for his daughter Janine's murder trial.
However, actress Charlie Brooks - who played Janine - will not be returning to the show after quitting last year.
Reid left EastEnders in November 2000 after complaining of exhaustion. But he made a brief return in January 2002 for a week-long special set in Spain.
He has since reprised his role as Frank in a one-off EastEnders special that saw his character selling cars and running a club in the West Country.
Reid's return coincides with that of Barbara Windsor as Peggy Mitchell (nee Butcher) and Ross Kemp as her son, Grant Mitchell.
But he will rejoin the show just as Jessie Wallace leaves it after five years as Kat Moon (nee Slater).
"He is only back for the duration of the trial, but while he is there his presence ruffles a lot of feathers," said a BBC spokesman.
Another addition to the EastEnders cast is actor Matt Di Angelo, who will be joining the show in December as Pat Evans' nephew Deano Wicks.

why not let sleeping dogs lie and move on bringing back old actors isn't doing anything for them or the show
why not let sleeping dogs lie and move on bringing back old actors isn't doing anything for them or the showIt's not like he's coming back full time :) There's nothing wrong with bringing people back to the show it's called realism :D Frank is a soap legend and Mike Reid is a fantastic actor so I have no qualms about him returning to the UK's no.2 soap

I want Janine back! Not him!
I want Janine back! Not him! :mad:Charlie Brooks won't come back and Mike Reid is brilliant :) I wanted both of them back but I'll settle for one. I'm sure they'll tempt Charlie back one day but for now she's happy being a full-time mother to her baby daughter Kiki. She has done some work and is easing herself back into work slowly. I don't know how they're going to do the trial without her though but maybe we won't actually see any courtroom scenes :searchme: It's going to be interesting seeing Frank's reaction to Pat because she's going to be giving evidence against Janine. I wonder if Pat will manage to persuade Frank to be on her side? I doubt Frank would though he knows what Janine can be like and Pat has a certain influence on him but I still think he'll support Janine and stay angry at Pat's betrayal! :)
Mike Reid is a great actor, and it will be good to see him back. its a pity that Janine wont return, but hopefully she gets a great exit

I am looking forward to his return, it should be interesting.
And by this time they'll hopefully be no Mofie left to ruin things well very little anyways :)
I'm glad Mike is coming back, but I am also glad that its only going to be for duration of the trial - at least it makes it more realistic. How's Peggy going to react to his return, I'll bet her feathers are going to be amongst the ones that are ruffled!!

Yay!
I think Pat will be ruffled more by his return because she's framing Janine for a murder she didn't commit :)
Do you think Pat and Frank will pick up where they left off whilst hes back though, as a comfort thing - cause they have got that chemistry between them haven't they??

Oh yes, I never thought of it like that. Infact, I forgot that Pat framed her.
Do you think Pat and Frank will pick up where they left off whilst hes back though, as a comfort thing - cause they have got that chemistry between them haven't they??I can't see him getting it together with Pat after what she's doing to Janine.
I am looking forward to seeing Peggy's reaction. And Pat's.
It's going to be a good comeback and atleast it's realistic because he's not back for good like they normally are :)

Yeh it was also on GMTV i'm getting bored of EE bringing back all the old charaters, but frank won't bother me too much if it ain't permanant!
If ee are gonna dig up the past why not bring Janine and/or Mel back!

I think so too.
Glad he's coming back, but its taken long enough for this trial to take place. Yeah it was on GMTV for a few seconds. Sounds goods though. I would like Janine back as well

Sounds good, would be better if Janine was coming back too though. At least we'll hopefully find out what happens to Janine.

i cant be bothered going through the messages so can someone tell me what court case is coming up for janine
Her trial is for the murder of Laura Beale.
Lets hope there are no more scenes of him standing at the door just wearing a smile and a bow-tie
I agree its right to bring him back briefly to add realism to the trial, but I certainly would not class Mike Reid as a great actor. He wasn't even a very funny comedian. TERRRRIIIIIFFFFIIIIIICCCC

hmmm, am bit torn really - while its great to have the "old greats" returning to our screens, time passing reminds us of the good times in eastenders rather than the bad, it's gonna be great having grant, phil, peggy and frank back but the storylines have got to be good - i still remember some of the crapness that we had to endure with den. if eastenders is to survive it has to have some great new actors and actresses otherwise there will be no-one left to come back in a few years! except the ferrerirs or however they were spelt! and without going too far off topic - we get a good new character - leo and they kill him off before we get to know the character. don;t get me started!
and rest....

This was on GWR FM this afternoon.
Mel is on the run from the police :)
Janine then bring her back!
Cool cant wait for this, him, peggy and pat round 2!!!

yeh, that was classic!
Even if you don't rate the actor he's still a good character :)
Yes he was good
I think this is a really good idea because we would all be complaining if he didn't come back for the trial saying that we don't even know what's happening with Janine yet
If Janine does not appear for her trial then there is no point in frank coming back
If Janine does not appear for her trial then there is no point in frank coming backThey could do the trial off-screen although that would be a tad stupid :)
It could work though as Frank would still be able to interact with Peggy and Pat etc and go to the trial each day. I still don't think it would be very good though without a proper trial and seeing Janine :D

i dont relly like frank
The thing I like about Frank is he's a proper cockney. Anyways this has also been confirmed on the official site :D

I agree.
If that's all they can offer us though then I'll just have to deal with it. It will be nice to finally have a closure on the Janine storyline and to find out what happens to her. We'll know if they plan on bringing her back or not in the future depending on how long she's sent to prison for if it's a long sentence just remember she can get out early for good behaviour although that's not very Janine-like but prison may make her behave for her freedom :D If she doesn't go to prison then we know they definately have plans to bring her back in the near future :D
They said on GMTV that Charlie Brooks wasn't reaturning for the trial!
