Coronation Street will introduce Jodie Prenger as George Shuttleworth's sister Glenda later this summer.

She's described as a cruise performer fresh off the boat who anchors down behind the bar of The Rovers ? just in time to help her brother during a particularly tough period.

Prenger beat the likes of Jessie Buckley to become the winner of I'd Do Anything back in 2008, grabbing the role of Nancy in Oliver, before embarking on a successful West End career. Coincidentally, she appeared in Corrie stage show Street of Dreams, playing the role of Elsie Tanner.

Taking a break from the Weatherfield set, the actress said of her casting: "I know I sound like a soppy sod, but it's been on my bucket list to be in Coronation Street since I was little. It's an honour, it truly is a very special moment in my life.

"To be part of something my family and I have loved for so long. And what a character, oh I have to say, total dream part. I can't wait for you all to meet fun and sassy Glenda, George Shuttleworth's sister.

"I love Tony Maudsley already, what a fella! Your first day on the cobbles is one of the most nerve-wracking experiences you'll go though and everyone was just so gloriously lovely, kind and welcoming. It was, and is, everything I expected, and more."

Chipping in, the soap's executive producer Iain MacLeod teased: "Glenda sails in fresh from the cruise ships with a whiff of the exotic, quickly making best friends and enemies in equal measure.

"The character is loads of fun and has echoes of classic Coronation Street females of old. Jodie is a fabulous talent and we are all very excited to have her aboard. She has felt very Corrie since the moment she stepped onto set and I think the viewers will love her."

Fans will get to meet Glenda in early August.

Coronation Street has confirmed who Glenda Shuttleworth's new love interest will be, with her upcoming romance story kicking off next week.

Glenda has been experiencing a difficult time lately, after she discovered that she could be entitled to half of the undertakers business following the emergence of a secret copy of her late father Archie's will.

With her brother George unwilling to accept the will and insisting that Glenda would ruin the business if she was involved, tensions have been high between the siblings.

In scenes that will air next week, Glenda spends time with her friend Michael Bailey, opening up to him about her feelings that George was always their dad's favourite and that she has been forced to play second fiddle to him.

Michael assures Glenda that she is kind, funny and smart ? and he soon pulls her in for a kiss.

Could this be the start of a new relationship for Glenda and Michael?

Star Jodie Prenger, who plays Glenda, teased to Digital Spy and other media back in March that her character would soon be finding love, joking, "I don't know who's more thrilled ? Jodie or Glenda!"

The rift between Glenda and her brother George has been growing over the past few weeks, with George having sabotaged Glenda's attempt to buy the Little Big Shotz business before she discovered the truth about Archie's will.

Actor Tony Maudsley, who plays George, has explained why George is so reluctant to bring his sister into the funeral business, saying that he is "half protecting his little sister" and "half protecting his dad's legacy".

He added: "He's in this quandary of not [wanting] to short-change his sister but also not wanting to hand her half a business that she's going to sink into the ground in five seconds, if she gets her hands on it!"
