Sadly, the rumours from earlier on today/yesterday have now been confirmed, Ch5 has axed Neighbours & it will be dropped from their schedule this (northern) summer. There are a lot of articles online - these are a couple:

Digital Spy article:

Neighbours to end on Channel 5 this summer, statement confirms
It's official.

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a38991678/neighbours-end-channel-5/

Neighbours will be dropped from the Channel 5 schedule this summer, Digital Spy can confirm.

A statement from the show's British broadcaster has officially verified the news following a tabloid leak on Saturday evening.

In an official statement released to Digital Spy, a Channel 5 spokesperson explained: "Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer.

"It's been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we'd like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series."

The representative added: "We'd also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.

"We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers."

Digital Spy is still awaiting comment from Neighbours' production company Fremantle and the show's Australian broadcaster Channel 10 ? and will update fans as we know more.

Channel 5's decision marks the end of an era, as Neighbours has been a crucial part of the station's daytime schedule since 2008.

Neighbours remains one of the broadcaster's most-watched programmes each week, but a report in The Sun has suggested that Channel 5 pulled its funding for the show for budget reasons.

The cost of funding Neighbours' ongoing production was reportedly "too expensive" for the channel to continue with.

Digital Spy understands that Channel 5's final episode of Neighbours will air in August.

In the past couple of years, Channel 5 has found success with airing stripped 9pm dramas, such as The Teacher, Lie With Me and Cold Call.

The channel has also brought in large audiences with its adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small.

Neighbours' UK broadcasts originally aired on BBC One from 1986 until 2008, when Channel 5 put in a successful bid to take over.

The station has worked closely with the Australian team in recent years, organising late-night specials, on-screen competitions and big storylines to tie in with the UK broadcast schedule.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).

Sky News:

Neighbours: TV soap will be axed from schedule as Channel 5 increases investment in UK drama
The announcement comes after reports that Channel 5, Fremantle Media, and Australian broadcaster Channel 10 had been trying to reach a deal to secure the show's future.

https://news.sky.com/story/neighbours-tv-soap-will-be-axed-as-channel-5-increases-investment-in-uk-drama-12534254

Neighbours will be axed after nearly four decades, with Channel 5 saying it will instead increase investment in original UK drama.

In a statement supplied to Sky News, a Channel 5 spokesperson said: "Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer.

"It has been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we'd like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series.

"We'd also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.

"We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers."

It comes after reports that Channel 5, Fremantle Media, and Australian broadcaster Channel 10 had been trying to reach a deal to secure the show's future.

The soap, which is filmed in Australia, has been reliant on funding from Channel 5 in recent years.

It reportedly pulls in an audience of more than one million viewers in the UK across two daily showings.

In Australia it is shown on a digital channel to a smaller audience.

Neighbours began its depiction of the lives of Ramsay Street residents in 1985, and was shown in the UK for the first time the following year.

According to The Sun, which first reported doubts over the show's future, producers are considering bringing back pop star Kylie Minogue for a guest appearance.

Minogue began her career on the soap as tomboy mechanic Charlene Robinson, but left in 1988 to pursue music.

Since then the soap has launched the careers of a number of Australian actors, actresses, and musicians, including Alan Dale, Craig McLachlan, Delta Goodrem, Guy Pearce, Jesse Spencer and Margot Robbie.

I hope another channel picks it up ... crazy from Channel 5 to axe it :(

They are supposedly looking for a new production partner, but I wouldn't be too hopeful. Fingers crossed. We will see.....

Network Ten issued a statement to TV Tonight on Sunday afternoon confirming that Fremantle Media has called a meeting with the cast and crew tomorrow:

"As outlined in the email to Neighbours cast and crew, it is our intention to continue our association with Neighbours if another broadcast partner comes forward," a spokesperson told the TV blog.

"Network 10 has an ongoing commitment to the show, the cast and crew and is hopeful that Fremantle will find a new production partner.

?We will provide further updates as they become available."

And this from the Sydney Morning Herald:

End of the road? Long-running soap Neighbours to stop filming

https://www.smh.com.au/culture/tv-and-radio/everybody-needs-good-neighbours-says-network-10-after-uk-blow-to-show-20220206-p59u7i.html

The British production company behind long-running soap Neighbours has informed staff the show will stop after it failed to reach a financial agreement with its broadcast partner Channel 5.

Fremantle Media executive producer Jason Herbison said on Sunday afternoon the Australian program, which has been running for more than 36 years, would stop production for an indefinite period because it could not find a broadcast partner to back it financially.

The email, seen by this masthead, said the future had been uncertain for some time.

?Our audience remains steady and [Australian partner] Channel Ten would love the show to continue if we could find another broadcast partner to replace [Channel 5],? Mr Herbison said.

?These discussions are ongoing, however, there is no new broadcaster at the moment and production must end, effectively resting the show.?

Staff have been asked to attend a meeting on Monday and filming will continue until June 10.

?We are so proud of the show, you all and everything that you?ve achieved. But for now, this chapter is closing and we want to work together to give Neighbours the amazing send-off it deserves,? Mr Herbison said.

Neighbours began on Australian television in 1985 and is recognised as the starting place for some of Australia?s most successful actors and musicians, including Kylie Minogue, Liam Hemsworth, Russell Crowe, Margot Robbie and Guy Pearce.

Network Ten, which has been the local broadcast partner since 1986, said it hoped to keep the popular program alive despite the withdrawal of its major backer. The program has run on its digital channel 10 Peach since 2011 after losing its place following the nightly news on the main channel.

?As outlined in the email to Neighbours cast and crew, it is our intention to continue our association with Neighbours if another broadcast partner comes forward,? a Network Ten spokesperson said. ?Network Ten has an ongoing commitment to the show, the cast and crew and is hopeful that Fremantle will find a new production partner. We will provide further updates as they become available.?

The potential end of Neighbours has broader ramifications for Network Ten because it uses the program in its local drama content quota. Without it, the network would not only be required to fill programming space but would also need to spend more money commissioning a range of new dramas to meet requirements set out by the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

Channel 5 released a statement to media in Britain announcing it will turn to more ?original UK drama? instead of the Melbourne-made soap, which drew millions of viewers in Britain and Australia for many years before losing steam.

?It?s been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we?d like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series,? a Channel 5 spokesperson said.

?We?d also, of course, like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.

?We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision. However, our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our UK viewers.?

Someone better pick it up.

Industry is saying it's unlikely anyone will pick it up. The show costs $20 million+ a year to produce, and it's no longer the drawcard it once was. It's a model from a bygone era of television. There will be little incentive for anyone to pick it up in the UK, and streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, etc. would be looking for something worth their investment, which Neighbours probably wouldn't be. Soaps generally have been going out of fashion for the last ten years - look at some of America's daytime soaps, some of which ran for decades longer than Neighbours, calling it a day.

It's sad, but it's the reality - this will likely be Neighbours' curtain call.

In business terms, it makes sense for Channel 5. Fremantle asked for three times the current investment that Channel 5 puts into the show and monetarily, it did not make sense for them when compared to the advertising revenue the show pulled in for them in the UK. Neighbours does not pull the attention it once did and it's unlikely it'll ever be that way again. I think it likely is Neighbours' time to end and let's just hope we can get a good resolution after 37 years.

Are we really that surprised? It's been so bad ever since Finn, then Finn and then Finn again, and has continued to go downhill with Nicolette, Toady and Mel and some of the other boring annoying characters/stories etc. Neighbours was a must watch for me, but I haven't watched since the time shift on Channel 5. I've so longed for the good old days, where it was fun and didn't take its self too seriously.

And the article in today's Sydney Daily Telegraph:

"Future of Neighbours TV show in doubt after 37 years on air
With the future of iconic Australian TV drama Neighbours under threat fans are trying to take matters into their own hands.

Fans are rallying behind iconic Australian TV drama Neighbours which is under dire threat after it was dropped by its UK broadcast partner.

The show, which is made in Melbourne and launched the international careers of household names such as Kylie Minogue, Margot Robbie, Guy Pearce, Natalie Imbruglia, Jason Donovan, Alan Dale, Jesse Spencer, Liam Hemsworth and Delta Goodrem, is facing its greatest battle for survival in its 37-year history.

Channel 5 in the UK has confirmed it is not renewing its contract with Fremantle, the company that produces Neighbours, and will cease airing the show in Britain as of June.

After news broke on Sunday a petition to keep the beloved show on air has attracted more than 13,000 signatures.

The petition calls on Channel 5 to continue to support the show, saying it has been a staple on UK screens for more than 35 years.

?Neighbours is more than just a TV show ? it is a source of comfort and entertainment for generations of fans who have watched it for decades,? the petition says.

?It is one of the most loved TV shows in the UK and brings lots of viewers from all backgrounds to Channel 5?s catalogue of channels. Even Adele is a fan. Channel 5 ? we plead with you ? please find a way to keep Neighbours on air.?

The show will continue to film new episodes at it?s Nunawading studio until June 10, however it?s future remains unclear after that date unless Fremantle can find a new partner.

Channel 10, the home of Neighbours in Australia, remains committed to the show and is eager for it to continue.

The show will not film on Monday and cast and crew have been called to an all-staff meeting at 11am that morning.

In an email to cast, seen by the Herald Sun, the show?s executive producer Jason Herbison confirmed the drama?s uncertain future.

?As you know the future of the show has been uncertain for some time. Our audience remains steady and Channel 10 would love the show to continue if we could find another broadcast partner to replace C5,? Herbison wrote.

?These discussions are ongoing however there is no new broadcaster at the moment and production must end, effectively resting the show.

?We are so proud of the show, you all and everything that you?ve achieved. But for now, this chapter is closing and we want to work together to give Neighbours the amazing send-off it deserves.?

Network 10 said was hopeful the show could be saved.

?As outlined in the email to Neighbours cast and crew, it is our intention to continue our association with Neighbours if another broadcast partner comes forward,? 10 said in a statement.

?Network 10 has an ongoing commitment to the show, the cast and crew and is hopeful that Fremantle will find a new production partner. We will provide further updates as they become available.?

Channel 5 said it was dropping Neighbours to focus on UK-made drama.

?Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer. It?s been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we?d like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series,? the broadcaster said in a statement.

There would have been internal rumblings for some time, plus they got the email that was leaked to the press. So effectively, they found out about a day or so before we did, really.

Today's meeting would have been just confirmation of what has already been said - that unless a new international partner came to the table, that Neighbours would conclude filming on June 10.

It would have been a chance to ask questions and give them a chance to air their concerns and work through the initial shock of this news together.

Neighbours is expensive to produce, and Channel 10 and Fremantle Australia cannot afford to produce it themselves. 10 stopped contributing as much when the show moved to 10Peach (then Eleven) about a decade ago. It's not on the main channel anymore in Australia, so 10 isn't contributing as much. But 10 also hasn't been in a good financial position for some time. It was only the purchase of 10 by ViacomCBS (who also owns Channel 5) that has saved the network. If anyone could come to the party, it could be ViacomCBS seeing they own both 10 and Channel 5 and potentially would have the money to keep Neighbours going.

In Australia, though, Neighbours doesn't bring in enough viewers to move back to the main channel, but manages to do decently in terms of multichannels. It also contributes heavily towards 10's Australian drama quota, which is mandated by the Australian Government. If they lose Neighbours, they have to fulfil their drama quota through new shows, which could potentially be a lot more costly.

Full Jackie Woodburne (Susan) interview on Ch10's 'The Project' on Monday night:

And the Digital Spy article on the interview:

Neighbours legend Jackie Woodburne "in shock" over the show's axe from Channel 5
Susan Kennedy actress says the soap's cast are "all very emotional".

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a38997968/neighbours-jackie-woodburne-shock-channel-5-axe/

Neighbours star Jackie Woodburne has admitted that she is "in shock" and "overwhelmed" after the news broke over the weekend that the long-running soap has been axed by Channel 5.

It has been confirmed that Channel 5 is dropping the Australian series from its schedule this summer, with production company Fremantle sharing that production on the soap will be paused indefinitely from June while it seeks a new UK broadcaster to collaborate on the show with.

Jackie, who has played the iconic Susan Kennedy on Neighbours for 27 years, has told The Project that the soap's cast and crew are still trying to process the news, revealing that they have all been pulling together to support each other.

"It's been a rollercoaster, absolutely, the last 24 hours or 36 hours, as you can imagine. Kind of a lot of information to try and process. I still feel a bit in shock, a bit overwhelmed," she said.

"We had a meeting today where our producers gave us some more information, really nothing more than what's already been out there, but, look, I have to say, the feeling was one of... it was just, it was quite lovely.

"Everybody is sad. We're all crying, we're all very emotional about it all, but we're all so determined to bring this show home as best we can."

The actress was full of praise for everyone who works on Neighbours, calling them "more than a family".

"These are people that all choose to be there and we work so fast and we care so passionately about the show, and we respect the show and we respect the fans," she said. "And we have so much fun. I mean, I have laughed more in the 27 years than I probably should have and been paid at the same time."

Although there is still an opportunity for the show to be given a reprieve, Jackie was asked how the soap might wrap up this summer if production does come to an end, and she promised that everyone involved will do all they can to make it special.

"Would you want to be a writer in that room trying to wind up a show after 38 years in a way that's going to please everybody? I mean, no pressure at all!" she said.

"But I know that everyone wants to honour the show and do it with love and with pride and dignity. So it will be big, but I think it will maintain all of those touchstones that have been so important to us."

ackie added that it would be "awesome" if iconic former Neighbours stars such as Kylie Minogue were to return to see the soap off, but said that the show's current cast "will do it proud".

"I just want everyone to keep their fingers crossed and not give up hope - anything's possible," she concluded.

Neighbours' Australian broadcaster Channel 10 has confirmed that it has "an ongoing commitment to the show", saying: "It is our intention to continue our association with Neighbours if another broadcast partner comes forward" and that it is "hopeful that Fremantle will find a new production partner".

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).

A couple of DS articles - Harold Bishop will be returning...

Neighbours star confirms Harold Bishop return ahead of show's finale
It wouldn't be the same without him.

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a39267615/neighbours-harold-bishop-return-finale/

Neighbours' Alan Fletcher has confirmed that Harold Bishop (Ian Smith) will return ahead of the soap's finale.

The actor, who has played Dr Karl Kennedy on the Australian series for 28 years, appeared on Monday's (February 28) episode of This Morning to talk about the show's final few episodes and some surprise returns.

The soap has been gracing people's screens for 37 years now but is slated to air its final episode during the summer after Channel 5's announcement that it would no longer air it.

Still, the beloved series continues to pull in a consolidated audience of around 1.4 million viewers in the UK across the two daily showings at 1.45pm and 6pm.

Speaking to the hosts, Fletcher commented on whether there is any possibility of loyal viewers seeing some of their old favourites returning to Ramsay Street for the show's final farewell.

He said: "I do know that it has been announced the wonderful Harold Bishop will return to Ramsay Street towards the end of the show. Someone from Karl's sordid past is definitely coming back and there are many, many other names in the pot.

"I can assure you that the producers are working very, very hard to try and entice some of the most loved characters from Neighbours to at least make some appearances."

However, Fletcher remained coy about whether or not certain icons who got their start on the show might be making an appearance ? namely Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan.

"I can't give away any spoilers on that yet but that's going to be the joy of those last episodes. Just sitting there and going 'oh look who's here!'" he said.

When asked about his own future plans, Fletcher went on to add that he hoped this newly-acquired free time might mean finally touring his show 'The Doctor Will See You Now' later this year, which was originally slated to launch in 2020, as well as working on his music ? he prefers Americana now ? and playing a few festivals.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).

And:

Neighbours star Alan Fletcher plays down hope of last-minute reprieve for show
"The show really must end."

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a39263282/neighbours-alan-fletcher-soap-end-no-hope-reprieve/

Neighbours star Alan Fletcher has opened up about how the cast and crew feel about the soap being given the axe and shared his thoughts on whether there is a chance to save it.

Speaking on Monday's (February 28) episode of This Morning, the Dr Karl Kennedy actor said that it's time for the Australian soap to come to an end after 37 years on air following on from Channel 5's announcement that it would no longer air Neighbours.

Despite fans petitioning to save the show, Alan Fletcher has now played down hope that the soap could continue to air on Channel 5 ? but he didn't rule out hope that Neighbours could return again in some form one day in the future.

"Channel 5's been a wonderful, wonderful partner for Neighbours for many, many years," Fletcher explained.

"In the current business environment, [Channel 5] have made the decision to change directions and of course, that's their prerogative. We thank them for the wonderful support they've given us over the years, but unfortunately, their priorities have changed.

"I'm afraid that's just the realities of TV land," he finished.

When asked by Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofield whether the cast are looking at how the soap could be saved, Fletcher continued to say that the focus now is delivering a "spectacular" ending for fans.

"We've had wonderful stewardship of a show that's loved by millions of people, and now we've got the responsibility to bring that show home in a way that's going to make it really, really special," he added.

He continued: "Once you turn the ship and say, 'We have to head in this new direction of finishing the show up', it can't be swung back around super quick.

"Now, if somewhere down the track, a different type of Neighbours was born or a different funder came along, of course, that would be marvellous. But the reality is the show really must end in August and finish production in June."

As for how fans can help support Neighbours in the immediate future, Fletcher added that the best thing to do is to keep watching.

"I hope everyone understands how appreciative we are of all that support," he said.

"The best thing, if people really want to support Neighbours and they want to give it a chance in the future is to watch it now, to be frank. To watch it right through to the end of August, get those viewer figures up so that maybe, maybe someone out there will say, 'Hey, this is a super popular show maybe it has a life in some other estuary.'"

Earlier this month, Fletcher shared a taste of what's next for his character as he teased that Karl is about to make a "big mistake".

"Although, this is a little bit of a spoiler alert in a sense, Karl is about to make another big, big, big mistake," the actor told Studio 10. "And it's not an affair."

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).

The best way for it to end is the council decide to demolish Ramsay Street and the complex and turn it into units. Residents try and save it but fail. People come back to say goodbye to their childhood/life etc.

Then if it gets a reprieve in the future they can resume that it fell through.

Neighbours axed for good as production company admits defeat

https://metro.co.uk/2022/03/02/neighbours-axed-for-good-as-production-company-admit-defeat-16203871/?ito=newsnow-feed

Neighbours has been axed for good after Fremantle Media failed to find a new home for the Australian soap.

Neighbours will end this summer after four decades on our screens.

The beloved Australian soap first hit screens in 1985 and has delighted fans ever since, with household names appearing in Ramsay Street ? including Kylie Minogue, Liam Hemsworth, Jason Donovan, Alan Dale and Margot Robbie.

Neighbours has been a staple of the daytime TV schedule in the UK for years, and originally aired on BBC One until 2008, before it was moved to Channel 5.

Fremantle Media ? the production company that make Neighbours ? has extensively searched for a new home for the soap after Channel 5 announced their plans to drop it from schedules in a few months time.

The production company is set to make an announcement on Thursday (March 3), stating that they haven?t been successful in their attempt at finding another channel prepared to take on Neighbours.

A source told The Sun: ?Fremantle have not commented on the situation since the news broke about Channel 5. They have been working tirelessly to secure funding from other networks but sadly they?ve been unable to save the soap.

?The announcement will confirm that the soap will end this summer and that they have been overwhelmed by the love and support from the audience since the news broke.?

?There is a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes to make the final few weeks of Neighbours are truly special?, the source continued to the publication.

?They are still waiting to hear back from a number of former stars but Peter has agreed to return and will start filming in May.?

Ian Smith, aka Harold Bishop, has confirmed he will reprise his role while Kylie Minogue and Jason Donavon have both been approached in the hope they will return.

The Sun also revealed Peter O?Brien will reprise his role as Shane Ramsay.

Despite the news, fans are continuing to campaign in the hope the show will be saved.

A petition, that?s been created on Change.org, currently has over 61,000 signatures.

The dedicated Neighbours audience also managed to knock Ed Sheeran from the Amazon and iTunes music charts as the theme tune made it?s way to number 1.

Neighbours

We are so sorry to say that after nearly 37 years and almost 9000 episodes broadcast we have to confirm that Neighbours will cease production in June. Following the loss of our key broadcast partner in the UK and despite an extensive search for alternative funding, we simply have no option but to rest the show
To our amazing, loyal fans, we know this is a huge disappointment, as it is to all of us on the team. We thank you for all your messages and support and promise to end the show on an incredible high. From here on, we are celebrating Neighbours.
#celebratingneighbours

From Neighbours website.

Seeing how a lot of viewers complain about the storylines in Coronation Street and Emmerdale and EastEnders and maybe Hollyoaks too, I do not watch it, I wonder if it is time to pull the plug on them too... seems the humour that was shown in years gone by is missing, repeated storylines with partners cheating on each other, numerous Who Is The Daddy storylines then, a supposedly big drug lord terrorising a couple of people in a small town, serial killer in a small Yorkshire village ... etc. Having watched Corrie and Emmerdale for more years than I care to remember I find myself not being bothered if I miss an episode and have to watch it some time later on catch-up or the omnibus edition .. Maybe going out on a high is better and leaves viewers with sweet memories rather than stop watching because the shows no longer appeal ?? :hmm:

Very saddened by this news. My mum and I have been watching it every weeknight together. It?s the only thing we really watch together on tv so that?s going to leave a big hole in our evenings :/

I wonder what they will do at the end, a meteor that wipes out everything and the people there? Zombie apocalypse? In 20 years time when they revive it, they bring back Isla and Abby who published a book about how they were the only ones to survive?

I'd just like it to end ( if it does ) in an ordinary " life goes on" way. Would make it better for it to hopefully return too.

"This is a sad day indeed": Neighbours star Alan Fletcher shares heartfelt plea following the soap's axing
The actor has played Karl Kennedy for almost 28 years.

https://www.nowtolove.com.au/celebrity/neighbours/alan-fletcher-neighbours-ending-71294

After nearly 37 years on the air, Neighbours will stop production in June marking the end of an era.

One person who's particularly rocked by this decision is Alan Fletcher, who has played Dr Karl Kennedy on the long-running soap since 1994.

"It's official, all attempts to #SaveNeighbours have been unsuccessful and #fremantle has confirmed the show will end production in June this year," Alan penned on Instagram.

"This is a sad day indeed. I want to express my deepest gratitude to the millions of fans all around the world who have supported our iconic drama for 37 wonderful years. And huge thanks to our broadcast partners @channel10au and @channel5_tv who have been incredible supporters of the show for so long.

Alan then pleaded with fans: "Please stick with the show right to the end because the final episodes will be an incredible celebration with returning characters and extraordinary story lines."

The actor continued by reflecting on his own Neighbours experience and gave a special shoutout to Jackie Woodburne who plays his on-screen wife Susan Kennedy.

"On a personal level @neighbours has been my creative home for almost 28 years. It has provided me with enormous artistic satisfaction and deep, everlasting friendships that I will treasure forever. Most especially my artistic partnership with the spectacular #jackiewoodburne who has truly made the journey the greatest joy imaginable.

"The show has also connected me to thousands of people who have supported my work on and offscreen through my music and stage appearances. I am filled with #gratitude #staytuned #celebrateneighbours #farewellneighbours #pleasestickwithus."

Past and present Neighbours cast members shared their support in the comments with Alan.

"Beautiful words mate. Sending lots of love," Rob Mills who played villain Finn Kelly wrote.

"Beautiful Alan. Congratulations on all you have built over the last 28 years. Xox," penned Lucy Durack.

Meanwhile Dan MacPherson remarked: "I'll never forget my time with the Kennedy's mate 🙏🏼❤️"

In 2019, Alan and Jackie reflected to TV WEEK on 25 years on working together on the soap.

"It's really marvellous. It's just a real honour to be part of television history in Australia," Alan said.

"25 years is an incredibly long time but it feels like yesterday!" Jackie added. "Time has gone so quickly and we've seen so many people come and gone. It's been wonderful."

Shane Ramsay (Peter O'Brien) & Lucy Robinson (Melissa Bell) to make appearances before the show ends.

Neighbours to bring back Shane Ramsay ahead of show's final episodes
Peter O'Brien last appeared as the character in 1987.

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a39308612/neighbours-shane-ramsay-return-final-episodes/

Neighbours looks set to bring back another familiar face for the soap's final episodes this summer.

Earlier today (March 3), it was confirmed that the Australian soap would be coming to an end after 37 years on air after being unable to find further funding following Channel 5's decision to drop the show last month.

We already know that Harold Bishop (Ian Smith) will return to Ramsay Street, as confirmed by Dr Karl Kennedy actor Alan Fletcher ? who also teased further past names coming back ahead of the last episode in August.

It is now being reported (via The Sun) that Shane Ramsay (Peter O'Brien) will also be back, having made his debut in the soap's first-ever episode in 1985 before departing two years later.

Shane, who was the son of Max and Maria Ramsay and the nephew of Madge Bishop, was involved in a number of dramatic storylines during his short stint, including multiple car crashes and facing a manslaughter charge.

It comes after Fletcher recently said of the reunions: "I do know that it has been announced the wonderful Harold Bishop will return to Ramsay Street towards the end of the show.

"Someone from Karl's sordid past is definitely coming back and there are many, many other names in the pot.

"I can assure you that the producers are working very, very hard to try and entice some of the most loved characters from Neighbours to at least make some appearances."

Former star Jason Donovan has also teased the possibility of his character Scott Robinson and Charlene (Kylie Minogue) popping up.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).

Neighbours star Melissa Bell confirms return as Lucy Robinson
"Everyone needs good Neighbours."

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a39309926/neighbours-melissa-bell-return-lucy-robinson/

Melissa Bell has confirmed that she will be returning to Neighbours once again as Lucy Robinson.

The actress, who first appeared as the character all the way back in 1991, previously came back to the Ramsay Street soap last year for a short guest stint.

Revealing the latest news on her Instagram page, Melissa shared a picture from behind-the-scenes of a vineyard frequently shown on the soap alongside co-stars Richard Huggett (Glen Donnelly) and Tim Kano (Leo Tanaka).

"I'm Back !! Everyone needs good Neighbours #lucyrobinson," she captioned the snap.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CantxwwvAdl/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=8c28845e-8b98-4d9c-b7d4-6ec4ccfc391d

The news comes as it was confirmed by production company Fremantle that the soap would be ending this year, after being unable to find new funding options following Channel 5's decision to drop it.

"It is with sadness that after nearly 37 years and almost 9,000 episodes broadcast, we are confirming that Neighbours will cease production in the summer," they said.

"Following the loss of a key broadcast partner in the UK, and despite a search for alternative funding, we currently have no option but to rest the show.

"Everyone at Neighbours has been overwhelmed by the love and support from the audience since the news came out.

"The show has brought a sunny slice of Australia into the homes of millions of viewers around the world launching the careers of dozens of household names along the way.

"But as this chapter of Ramsay Street comes to a close, we promise to do everything we can to give the show the send-off it deserves."

However, alongside Melissa returning, a number of other past faces will also be coming back into the fold ahead of the soap's conclusion, including Ian Smith as Harold Bishop, and reportedly Peter O'Brien as Shane Ramsay.

Some more might be in the frame too, according to Alan Fletcher (Dr Karl Kennedy), while former star Jason Donovan has suggested that he and Kylie Minogue could reunite as Scott and Charlene Robinson.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).

Neighbours producer rules out one possible ending for show
"I would never."

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a39316409/neighbours-producer-rules-out-explosion-ending/

Neighbours executive producer Jason Herbison has opened up on the soap ending for good and the one finale he would never consider.

It was recently announced that Channel 5 would no longer air the Australian series from this coming summer. Despite fans petitioning to save the long-running show, the cancellation became official today (March 3).

Ahead of the grand finale, Herbison discussed potential endings and returning guest stars ? including a certain someone named Kylie.

After the cast have insisted for the ending to be a joyful celebration of the soap's 37-year-long run, Herbison confirmed that no tragedies are to be expected.

"Ramsay Street is eternal and I like to think it will live on in the hearts and minds of the viewers, long after the final scene. I would never, ever blow it up," he told TV Tonight.

"The ending will be a celebration of the past and the present, with the door very much left open for a future."

The producer also said he has "a vision for the finale", though this might change before June, when the soap's very last episodes will wrap filming.

As for returning characters, he didn't rule out anyone coming back, not even pop star Kylie Minogue, who played mechanic Charlene Robinson on the show between 1986 and 1988.

"One of my great joys has been to bring back many former characters in recent years, which is something the show seemed reluctant to do prior," he said.

"So I'm definitely hoping some of these faces return along with others we haven't been able to lure back until now.

"I feel very strongly that the end must equally be a celebration of the current cast. Karl, Susan, Toadie and Paul have earned a very rightful place, front and centre."

As for trying to get Kylie back, he reassured fans, saying: "I'm doing everything you'd expect me to be doing!"

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).

Neighbours' story team finish work on soap after mapping out final episodes
That's when good neighbours become good friends...

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a39328252/neighbours-final-episodes-story-team-finished/

The writers for Neighbours got together in Rebekah Elmaloglou's fictional house for a gathering and food-filled final send-off.

Rebekah, who plays Terese Willis on the soap, lent her patio to the team and the garden table was filled with a spread to mark the story team's final day in the writers' room as they locked in the last episode.

Neighbours script producer Shane Isheev tweeted a multiple picture post to capture the moment and shared a few heartfelt words with his followers.

One Neighbours fan replied to the post, tweeting: "So so sad. But please know how much we fans truly appreciate all that you've done. The way you've woven drama, intrigue, emotion and humour has been outstanding. Even storylines that look ludicrous on paper have been brought to convincing life in your deft hands. We salute you."

Another fan replied to Shane, saying: "Thank you to you all for your amazing work on the #Neighbours stories - your passion for the show has shone through over the years & that's why the show is so beloved. So very sad for you all."

A third follower said: "Just when I'd stopped crying about the show ending, I'm off again.Heartfelt thanks to everyone for all the joy, drama and sheer entertainment they've bought me xxx."

The outpour of love and loyalty from fans comes after the reports last month that Neighbours was facing the axe.

A mainstay on the Channel 5 schedule, the broadcaster released an official statement to Digital Spy at the time confirming the news, with the hope to see it salvaged.

However, it's now been officially confirmed that the soap has been unable to secure funding from another network and will cease production after 37 years.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).

EXCLUSIVE: Jackie Woodburne and Alan Fletcher reveal their "devastation" over Neighbours' axing and what fans can expect from the finale
''I was shocked and devastated.''

https://www.nowtolove.com.au/celebrity/neighbours/neighbours-karl-susan-71388

Neighbours, as we know it today, is hard to imagine without Susan and Karl Kennedy.

After arriving in Ramsay Street in 1994, the couple have been through a lot. They've dealt with infidelity, divorce and remarriage. They've raised three of their own kids, and provided a warm home for countless lost youngsters passing through Erinsborough.

They've supported each other through illness and professional hardship. And, in true Neighbours style, they've encountered every natural disaster known to man.

But as we've watched the fictional couple overcome everything thrown at them over the past 28 years, we've come to know Karl and Susan as if they're members of our own family.

For the actors bringing the roles to life, the news that Neighbours is coming to an end is heartbreaking. After hearing that UK broadcaster Channel 5 wouldn't be renewing its contract to fund the drama, Jackie Woodburne, who plays Susan, struggled to believe it.

"I was shocked and devastated," Jackie, 66, tells TV WEEK. "I was heartbroken for all the young, up-and-coming actors and crew who will no longer have this amazing training ground. I will miss this place very much."

With confirmation that filming will cease in June, it's been a bitter pill to swallow for all the cast and crew.

"It's very sad for the hundreds of people who will lose their jobs," Alan Fletcher, 64, shares. "But I'm also gutted for the millions of fans who still watch the show right around the world, who are distraught at losing their favourite show."

While the pair are still coming to terms with the news, they promise the show will go out with a bang.

"I can't begin to imagine what kind of story will wrap up 38 years of TV history, but I hope it's upbeat and happy, showcases our fantastic cast and crew and leaves the fans satisfied," Jackie says.

Now that Neighbours' fate has been decided, Alan and Jackie are determined to celebrate a lifetime of "fun, laughter, drama, intense passion and humanity" that the show has brought audiences. But in the process, they can't help but reflect on where their dynamic partnership all began.

"I first met Fletch when I was cast as his sister in Cop Shop in 1982," Jackie says. "I thought he had terrific energy and was very funny. Pretty good-looking too!"

It was much the same for Alan: "I was struck by her beauty and sparkling personality," he recalls. "She lit up every room she entered."

From the get-go, the actors were on the same wavelength, and their characters ? two parents doing their best to raise﷯ three kids ? resonated with the public.

"I think the writers managed to imbue our characters with the sort of flaws and commendable qualities that resonated with viewers," Alan remembers. "Many fans tell me they see their own parents or themselves in Karl and Susan."

Since then, they have become unstoppable collaborators who can bring life to even the most challenging of plotlines. For Jackie, her hardest acting challenge was when Susan was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

"We had to tell a dramatic story, but keep it authentic and real," Jackie explains.

"So many people live with MS, and any wrong note would have had an immediate backlash. I think we got it right, but the portrayal of Susan's journey was challenging for all of us."

While Susan struggled to tackle the impact of MS, Alan's hardest moment as Karl was a little more light-hearted.

"Karl once became a pharmaceutical rep and uncovered a dodgy scheme to sell out-of-date medicines to the Third World," Alan says with a laugh. "It was a bizarre spy story that seemed out of character to me. Gave it all I had, of course!"

Although the pair have had all sorts of storylines, their favourite one is easy: the spicy love triangle between Susan, Karl and Izzy Hoyland (Natalie Bassingthwaighte).

"I loved that story, because it didn't follow cliched standards," Alan says.

"Karl wanted Izzy, but she certainly didn't want Karl ? until she discovered she was pregnant to a dead man. So Izzy pretended to love Karl and, by the time he discovered her deception and dumped﷯ her, Izzy really was in love with Karl," Alan explains.

"It was wonderful irony and it didn't end there!"

Jackie agrees. "The big affairs and marriage break-ups were incredible to play," she says. "A standout storyline was the day Susan and Karl remarried on a boat on the Thames and Izzy turned up and had her baby there and then!"

But despite Karl's serial infidelity, and fathering a child with Izzy, Susan forgave him and they eventually reunited. Over the years, fans have wondered why Susan never gave Karl a taste of his own medicine.

"I don't think anyone would have blamed Susan if she'd had a revenge affair, but that's just ﷯not how she rolls!" Jackie says with a laugh.

"Susan knows Karl better than anyone and has found a happy life with him, knowing that the past can't be changed, but that a good future is still possible because the flaws are accepted on both sides."

Behind the scenes on Neighbours lay a whole team of writers and production crew, working tirelessly to film hours of content we never thought would end. In the Aussie entertainment industry, the set became known as the ultimate training ground for young actors.

For Jackie, mentoring was a big reason she remained with the show for so long.

"I love working with young actors," she says. "I love seeing them become skilled performers, and offering advice if I think it will help them. They reciprocate with their enthusiasm and energy, so I get a lot in return.

"Watching young actors have a breakthrough moment in their work and seeing the joy in their discovery is something I will always cherish."

Alan feels differently. "I've never felt like a mentor," he says. "In fact, I've﷯ learnt so much from young actors. That'﷯s the beauty of an ensemble. We all thrive through our joint work."

Now, after almost 30 years in Neighbours, Alan and Jackie are preparing themselves for a new beginning without Susan and Karl, and their professional partnership.

But for viewers at home, the farewell might be far harder. After all, we're saying goodbye to the mum and dad of Australian television.

DS article. Characters Kyle, Roxy & Ned to be leaving soon:

Neighbours lines up cast exits ahead of show's final months
Farewell, Ramsay Street.

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a39420722/neighbours-spoilers-cast-exits-march-2022/

Neighbours spoilers follow.

Neighbours will be waving goodbye to some popular characters as the show heads into its final months on screen.

The long-running soap recently announced that it will end production in June after 37 years. The final episode will air in August in the UK, while Australian fans will see the finale in September.

In the coming weeks, fans will see newlyweds Kyle Canning (Chris Milligan) and Roxy Willis (Zima Anderson) leave the programme.

Colette Mann, who played the role of Sheila Canning, announced the pair's departures in a recent Isolation Interviews chat with Hospital Radio Reading.

She shared the news while discussing her own abrupt exit from Neighbours.

Digital Spy understands that Kyle and Roxy's final scenes will air in mid-April at UK pace.

Meanwhile, a Neighbours insider has told Digital Spy that Ned Willis will also be departing the show as actor Ben Hall has reached the end of his contract.

It's thought that the three cast departures were already planned and storylined before the news came through that Neighbours would be ending.

Chris Milligan first took on the role of Kyle in 2008 and stuck around until 2016. He reprised the role in 2019.

Zima has been playing Roxy since 2019, while Ben landed the role of Ned in 2016 and became a regular two years later.

Neighbours bosses are now focused on giving the show a fitting finale following the news that production will be ending.

Harold Bishop (Ian Smith) and Shane Ramsay (Peter O'Brien) are already confirmed to be returning in the final weeks, while more returnees will be announced at a later date.

A spokesperson for production company Fremantle recently said: "It is with sadness that after nearly 37 years and almost 9000 episodes broadcast, we are confirming that Neighbours will cease production in the summer.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 and streams on My5. In Australia, the show airs Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach and streams on 10 Play.

Neighbours boss confirms new family and mystery tragedy in show's final months
"There is a wonderful sense of renewal."

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a39436604/neighbours-spoilers-new-family-tragedy/

Neighbours spoilers follow.

Neighbours will see a new family move into Ramsay Street as well as a mystery tragedy in its final few months.

In a recent interview with Inside Soap, executive producer Jason Herbison teased what viewers can expect from the iconic Australian soap before the final episodes air in the UK, and it sounds like there is plenty of drama to look forward to.

"What I can say is that the remaining few months have a bit of everything that we know and love Neighbours for," he said.

"There's heightened drama, unexpected visitors, an untimely tragedy, lots of romantic entanglements, and also plenty of Neighbours fun too. We also have a new family moving into the street, so there is a wonderful sense of renewal as well."

No details were revealed about who the new family is, but there's a chance that it won't be entirely new characters.

Some fans have been speculating that the Rodwells could be a greater presence in the months ahead. Teenager Sadie (Emerald Chan) was recently part of a major storyline that saw Zara Selwyn being framed for a series of fires, while her father Andrew (Lloyd Will) has made occasional appearances as the local police sergeant and Levi Canning's boss.

Sadie's mother Wendy (Candice Leask) has also made a couple of appearances.

Of course, there's also the possibility that the family will be a cast of characters we haven't met before.

As for which house on Ramsay Street may become vacant, Number 26 seems like the most likely option.

Sheila Canning (Colette Mann) had an off-screen exit earlier this year, while Kyle Canning (Chris Milligan) and Roxy Willis (Zima Anderson) are set to depart in the coming weeks. That leaves Levi in the house by himself.

Similarly, Herbison didn't give away anything about what the upcoming "untimely tragedy" is and who it will impact the most.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 and streams on My5. In Australia, the show airs Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach and streams on 10 Play.

should the writers, producers, actors etc take any 'blame' for the show being cancelled?

Channel 5 cutting costs or deciding it doesn't make enough money is one thing, but why.. you can say it's a show from a different era, fine, maybe it is, but Eastenders (~3m viewers) and Coronation St (~5.5m viewers) are still going. Channel 5 messed around with the time slot, Ch 10 messed around with the weekly schedule. If we accept it's not as popular as it once was, let's work out why that is. H&A gets approx twice as many viewers per episode (400k vs 200k ish). It is only 3yrs younger than Neighbours.

For me, yes, the writers and producers do take a lot of the responsibility. It's been a poor show for a while. Repetitive storylines, bad writing outweighing the good elements and replacing departing actors with guest spots. Paul and Terese ad infinitum, disaster holidays (another one coming up soon...).

Reading the spoilers for the upcoming episodes we have what sounds like a big angle with one of the schoolkids' grandparents. Who cares. As of right now, I don't think we have met this character yet. Another new girl coming in with a secret about to get into a love story with Nicolette, for a change.

When Tyler was arrested and sent to jail it was a case of 'you were there, it must be you'. Case closed. This happens so often. Jane discussing Zara last week - you were there, someone said it was you, you're guilty and Amy is a terrible parent. The end. Same thing happened when she was suspended. You're suspended, then one of the bad girls sticks up for her, well okay then, not suspended anymore. Ah, that easy is it?!

Aaron, David and this new guy from the hospital. Never seen him before, now he's David's best friend, coincidentally also gay and newly-single, and Aaron (why don't you go to work anymore Aaron!!!) is insanely jealous.

Run out of ideas? budget constraints? changing plans due to covid (which i can believe because of the lockdowns)? or just a decline in quality.

I used to watch Neighbours on TV, then I moved to watching it later on Tenplay, now I can go 2-3 days without watching it and forgetting it was even on.

This avoids fans learning of storyline spoilers for the final 6 weeks of the show.

Australian fans and TV critics had previously urged 10 to address the irregularity after it became clear the show would not continue beyond mid year.

This week 10 vice president and chief content officer Beverley McGarvey lamented the show?s fate after producers Fremantle were unable to secure a new British broadcaster.

We would love to be able to keep doing it. But unfortunately, unless they find international partners, it?s not possible for us to continue, ?she said.

Neighbours teases mystery death in trailer for show's final months
Who will meet their end?

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a40043900/neighbours-mystery-death-trailer-final-months/

Neighbours has teased a mysterious death in a new trailer for the soap's final months.

Fans will know that the series will be sadly coming to an end this August, though details of how exactly it will bow out remain under wraps.

However, a new trailer has been released teasing the final episodes, with the question "who leaves forever?" We then see footage of a funeral scene and a coffin being carried.

While this may be stock footage or specially-filmed for the trailer, it nevertheless appears to suggest that a death is coming.

Neighbours released the soap's last ever cast photo last week, paying tribute to its "class of 2022", emotionally reminding us that the end really is in sight.

The soap is set to see the return of a number of familiar faces for the final episodes, including classic cast members Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan as Charlene and Scott Robinson.

Speaking about bringing the duo on board, producer Jason Herbison recently admitted that it wasn't too difficult to convince them.

"Both Kylie and Jason needed very little persuading at all ? they both appreciate the show and the special role that it has played in their careers," he told Inside Soap.

"It's a lovely show of respect to Neighbours, and I was thrilled when they said yes. It didn't feel right to end the show without them."

He added: "I was there on the day of filming, and it was a very moving experience and one that will remain with me well beyond the series wrapping in August. I feel very privileged to have been part of it."

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 and streams on My5. In Australia, the show airs Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach and streams on 10 Play.

Agreed kaz. Yes, I have been seeing a lot of the rumours that it will be Paul that dies at the end, but I am also not so sure that it will be him (or anyone at all?). I think in an earlier interview when it was first announced the show had been axed, the Producer hinted that there may be a death/funeral coming up, & then when it was mentioned that Harold will be returning, all the speculation was that it would be him who dies (ie he would come back because he was dying & wanted to say his goodbyes to Ramsay Street & the likes of Karl & Susan etc). But now it seems all the speculation has turned to the idea that it will be Paul. Like you say, I am not so sure.

There are also suggestions that the 'funeral' parts of the latest promo may be symbolic only & that they just relate to the 'death' of the show itself...We will see.

Who dies on Neighbours? 7 potential victims after the show's funeral teaser
Which Ramsay Street resident(s) might be killed off ahead of the series finale?

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a40058390/neighbours-spoilers-who-dies-2022/

Neighbours spoilers follow.

A new promo has been released, teasing the final few months of Neighbours. And it drops a hint that not everybody on Ramsay Street will survive until the final episode.

The long-running Aussie soap will end its 37-year run with episode 8903, airing on Monday, August 1 on Channel 5.

So as the countdown continues towards the bittersweet series finale (which includes Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan making a special guest appearance), we're wondering who might be killed off in a shock twist.

Here's a round-up of characters, both past and present, whose lives could be on the line.

1. Paul Robinson

Baddie businessman Paul has had several near-death experiences during 26 years on the Aussie soap.

Remember when his fifth wife Rebecca pushed Paul off the balcony at Lassiters? Or when kind-hearted Harold snapped and attempted to strangle his hated neighbour?

As Neighbours comes to an end, will Paul's ruthless ways finally catch up with him? Have the series producers and writers made the bold decision to kill off the long-running character, who featured in the very first episode back in 1985?

Paul's death could be the reason that brings his younger brother Scott and his wife Charlene back to Ramsay Street again after all these years.

2. Harold Bishop

When Harold last visited Erinsborough in 2015 (for the 30th anniversary of Neighbours), he was haunted by the ghost of his late wife Madge.

Ian Smith has recently been back on set, filming scenes as Harold for the soap's final episodes.

Has Harold returned for one last trip down memory lane and to be reunited with family members, Scott and Charlene, and former son-in-law, Joe Mangel?

Could there be a super sad goodbye in store, with Harold ready to join his beloved Madge in the afterlife?

3. Hendrix Greyson

Harold's Cafe employee Hendrix is currently living on borrowed time, since being diagnosed with lung disease after being exposed to smoke during the fire at Erinsborough High School.

Coming up on Neighbours, it looks like Hendrix may accidentally sabotage his chance of a lung transplant, when he goes in search of the donor and is caught by a grieving family member.

Without a lung transplant, the future could be looking very bleak for Hendrix.

In a cruel twist of fate, is it possible Hendrix won't survive long enough to marry his girlfriend Mackenzie Hargreaves?

4. Harlow Robinson

Jemma Donovan recently revealed a new look on social media after she finished filming her three-year run as Harlow Robinson. A Neighbours spokesperson has confirmed to Digital Spy that Harlow's final scenes will air ahead of the series finale.

So what will happen to Harlow? Next week she manages to escape the clutches of cult member Corey, who has been trying to recruit her into the Restoration Order. But creepy Corey is still on the loose and has unfinished business with Harlow.

Could there be a tragic ending in store for Harlow, just like her ill-fated mum, Prue?

5. Izzy Hoyland

The woman who once managed to wreck the marriage of Karl and Susan Kennedy will be stirring up more trouble when she returns to Ramsay Street.

When Izzy last visited Erinsborough in 2018, she was at the centre of a baby bombshell plot, when she stole Karl's sperm sample and attempted to impregnate herself. How can Izzy possibly show her face again after that?

There's got to be a major reason that brings her back to the Melbourne cul-de-sac. Could it be that Izzy has some terrible news for Karl and wants him to have permanent custody of their daughter, Holly?

We're totally speculating here. But what if Izzy's wicked ways finally catch up with her and she discovers she is dying? Such a storyline might even lead to a bitter-sweet truce between Izzy and long-time love rival, Susan.

6. Glen Donnelly

Over 30 years ago, Glen cheated death when he fell off the roof of Lassiters. But what if the Grim Reaper is coming for Glen ahead of the series finale?

Glen, who has a history of alcohol addiction, reluctantly starts taking painkillers in episodes showing this month, after being injured in an accident at the vineyard. But is the recovering addict risking a relapse?

He's totally stressed-out over the situation involving his long-lost daughter, Kiri. Will Glen ease his sorrows with painkillers instead of alcohol? And could Glen's downward spiral have a tragic end?

7. David Tanaka

Paul's son David's future is currently looking uncertain. The hospital doctor could be facing possible prison time after confessing to letting Gareth die, following Gareth's shock attack on David's husband, Aaron.

Neighbours star Takaya Honda recently posted some behind-the-scenes photos of a filming aboard a boat.

Some viewers have since been speculating that David might go on the run to avoid the law. Or what if somebody falls overboard and drowns?

It would certainly be terribly tragic if Paul was to lose another of his children. Remember his son Cameron (the twin brother of evil Robert), who died in hospital after being hit by a car? But in Soapland, death means mega drama.

By the way, we totally hope David doesn't die. Can you imagine the tears and poor Aaron left alone to raise baby Isla?

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 and streams on My5. In Australia, the show airs Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach and streams on 10 Play.

Neighbours boss teases surprising ending for soap after writing final ever episodes
Cast and crew now have the finale scripts.

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a40075454/neighbours-spoilers-jason-herbison-show-ending/

Neighbours spoilers follow.

Neighbours boss Jason Herbison has spoken exclusively to Digital Spy about the soap's ending after writing the final ever episodes.

The show's executive producer has taken on writing duties for the conclusion of Neighbours, which will air as an hour-long special on August 1.

The scripts were recently issued to cast and crew, who'll wrap up filming on the iconic drama on June 10. This marks the end of an era for the soap world after Neighbours' incredible 37-year run.

Herbison told Digital Spy: "I feel very privileged to write the final episodes and bring our beloved Neighbours to an end. I always had a vision of how I would close the show and I have stuck to that vision, so I hope the viewers enjoy it.

"The magnitude of the moment is not lost on me and everyone is coming together behind the scenes to make the ending as befitting as possible."

Hinting that there are still some secrets under wraps, he added: "I'm pleased to say that I haven't seen anyone guess what happens yet ? though the final scene would be hard to guess!"

Herbison has served as Neighbours' showrunner since 2013, but he also occasionally writes scripts for the programme.

Over the years, he has penned Neighbours' first-ever three-hander episode in 2015 and Sonya Rebecchi's heartbreaking final episode in 2019.

Herbison's most recent script, which saw Hendrix Greyson and Mackenzie Hargreaves travel to Sydney together for an emotional trip, has also been widely praised since the special episode aired on Channel 5 last week.

Neighbours bosses have announced that more than 20 returning characters will be heading back to Ramsay Street in time for the show's finale.

These include iconic supercouple Scott and Charlene Robinson, after Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue agreed to reprise their roles for a cameo appearance.

The final episodes are expected to be celebratory, rather than ending the show with a disaster that destroys Ramsay Street.

Herbison previously told TV Tonight in March: "Ramsay Street is eternal and I like to think it will live on in the hearts and minds of the viewers, long after the final scene. I would never, ever blow it up.

"The ending will be a celebration of the past and the present, with the door very much left open for a future."

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 and streams on My5. In Australia, the show airs Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach and streams on 10 Play.

For those in Ireland, it appears that the final 'double' episode, will be shown as two separate parts on 2 & 3 August.

rte article:

Date for Neighbours' final episode in Ireland is revealed

https://www.rte.ie/entertainment/2022/0524/1300839-date-for-neighbours-final-episode-in-ireland-revealed/

The final episode of Neighbours will air in Ireland on RT?2 on 3 August, it has been confirmed.

The much-loved, long-running Australian soap is coming to an end after 37 years on screen after UK TV station Channel 5 announced in February that it was to stop airing the show.

Neighbours originally launched on Australia's Seven network in 1985, but the channel axed it before Ten picked it up the following year and it became an international hit.

In Australia, it has been shown on digital channel 10 Peach since 2011 and has been reliant on the UK broadcaster for funding.

The soap, which has aired on RT? since 2 January, 2001, will finally come to an end this summer.

The second last episode will air on Tuesday, 2 August with the final 30-minute episode airing on Wednesday, 3 August.

Many beloved characters will be returning to the show before it winds up for good.

Charlene Robinson (Kylie Minogue), Scott Robinson (Jason Donovan) Harold Bishop (Ian Smith), Shane Ramsay (Peter O'Brien) and Izzy Hoyland (Natalie Bassingthwaighte) are among the characters who will be heading back to Ramsay Street.

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a40127231/neighbours-last-ever-episode/

Neighbours is heading for its home stretch, with just over two months left before we say goodbye to Ramsay Street's residents for good.

The iconic soap has been part of the TV schedules for 37 years, but cast and crew will film its final scenes in June following Channel 5's decision to drop the show.

While Neighbours' passionate fanbase is savouring every single episode at the moment, anticipation is also building for the nostalgia-filled finale.

Just in case you're not a superfan with the date already marked in your calendar, here's everything you need to know about when to expect the last ever episode.

When does Neighbours' final episode air in the UK?

In June 2021, Neighbours' cast and crew were informed that Channel 5 had renewed the show on a one-year deal. This was much shorter than the previous multi-year deals that Channel 5 had agreed to in 2007 and 2017.

With some cast and crew already getting nervous, their worst fears were confirmed in February 2022 when Channel 5 confirmed that it would no longer broadcast the soap beyond August.

Production company Fremantle hoped to find a new UK broadcasting partner to finance further episodes, but no deal could be secured and it was announced in March that Neighbours would be ending after 37 years.

Channel 5 bosses later confirmed that the final episode of Neighbours would air on Monday, August 1.

The finale has been announced as an "epic double episode" which will screen in an hour-long slot.

So far, there has been no official word on whether the finale will air in the usual 1.45pm and 6pm slots, or be promoted to a prime-time special.

When does Neighbours' final episode air in Australia?

Since January 2022, Neighbours episodes have had their world premiere on Channel 5 for UK audiences, ending the decades-long tradition of Australia getting to watch the Ramsay Street action first.

This is because Channel 5 has aired five episodes per week all year, while 10 Peach in Australia has steadily fallen behind by only screening four.

The good news for fans in Australia is that plans are already afoot for 10 Peach to start catching up again.

In March, 10 Peach announced that it would start airing double episodes of Neighbours from Monday, June 13.

This means that Australia will have caught up with the UK again in time for the finale.

The last episode will air in the UK and Australia on the same day. Due to the time difference between both countries, it seems that Australia will get the episode first, albeit only by a few hours.

A 10 Peach spokesperson recently told TV Tonight: "From Monday, June 13, friends of Ramsay Street can tune into double the fun, double the action with double episodes to celebrate the final season of Neighbours.

"The ultimate series finale will air on Monday, August 1."

When does Neighbours' final episode air in Ireland?

RT? One has also announced its own plans to broadcast the finale of Neighbours in Ireland.

The Irish broadcaster traditionally airs episodes one day behind Channel 5 in a 2pm timeslot.

In a recent post on its website, RT? confirmed that it will be splitting the one-hour finale of Neighbours into two parts.

This means that the penultimate episode will air on RT? One on Tuesday, August 2 with the final visit to Ramsay Street following on Wednesday, August 3.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 and streams on My5. In Australia, the show airs Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach and streams on 10 Play.

DS article - Guy Pearce (Mike Young) to return for Neighbours finale:

Neighbours signs up Hollywood star Guy Pearce for final ever episode
He joins a long line of returning characters.

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a40190862/neighbours-finale-guy-pearce-mike-young/

Neighbours-turned-Hollywood star Guy Pearce has confirmed he will be returning for the soap's final ever episode.

The Australian actor, most recently seen in HBO's Mare of Easttown, starred on Ramsay Street as Mike Young from 1986 to 1989.

In a statement, Pearce said (via Metro): "It is very exciting and surreal at the same time being back on set again, however it feels like coming home.

"It's where it all started for me professionally. I've been asked to come back on occasions over the years and wondered if it was the right thing to do, but once I knew the show was finishing, I knew I had to do it.

"While I've caught up with many of the cast I worked with on the show over the years, there is nothing like being here all together again."

Executive producer Jason Herbison said: "I'm incredibly honoured that Guy is returning to the show for a very special story arc.

"Having him back on set has been poignant for him and for us. He's been very involved in the storyline, and I can't wait to finally answer the question for viewers ? who is Mike Young today?"

We last saw Mike when he decided to leave Ramsay Street with his love life in tatters and going to help his sick mother recover.

Pearce will be joined by a line-up of old and new cast members from the show for the grand finale, including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Olympia Valance and more.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 and streams on My5. In Australia, the show airs Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach and streams on 10 Play.

Sydney Daily Telegraph article. Hopefully the link works as there are some nice old photos included:

Neighbours uncut: what the stars really got up to
Four decades and almost 9000 episodes on, one of Australia?s favourite villains dishes the dirt, and some of the good, as iconic soap Neighbours nears its end.

https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/entertainment/television/neighbours-uncut-what-the-stars-really-got-up-to/news-story/ef39f82518dad3deb55d342fbdeab8f9

IT was December 1984 when the then relatively unknown Stefan Dennis walked on to the sprawling Neighbours set to step into the well-heeled shoes of Paul Robinson.

Four decades and almost 9000 episodes on, he?s hugely recognisable here and abroad, and is preparing to farewell one of Australia?s favourite villains as the iconic soap comes to the end of filming on Friday.

The enormity that he?s the only cast member to have been on set for that very first day and last day is not lost on the 63-year-old, but Dennis admits ? as he chats in between takes on the bitterly cold outdoor shoot ? that he?s just had no time for emotions yet.

?I?m just coming to work each day and each day is busier than it?s been for a long time and very, very long hours,? Dennis says.

?So we?re just doing the gig we?ve been doing for the last 40 years because we?ve still got to produce a show til the end of the week. But ? that?s going to be quite emotional.?

He?s a big sook ? his own words ? so Dennis is tipping all the tears will flow as cut is called for the last time on Friday.

While giving into all the feels will be easy, narrowing down his most memorable moments is somewhat harder. Five years ago when we chatted, Dennis joked it was a ridiculous question to ask. Fair enough given he?s the only original cast member still on the fictional cul-de-sac that is Ramsay St, with plenty of TV magic from which to choose. You name it, his character the oft-times nefarious Paul Robinson has done it ? being held hostage, losing a leg, thrown in jail, suffering from amnesia or just heading to the altar on repeat.

He has had six wives and nine weddings, beating Ryan Moloney?s Jarrod ?Toadie? Rebecchi by two.

There?s been a cavalcade of stars announced for the final months of the show including Daniel MacPherson who played Joel Samuels, Melissa Bell who played Paul?s younger sister Lucy Robinson, Peter O?Brien, who appeared in the show?s first episode as Shane Ramsay and Natalie Bassingthwaite who was one of Paul?s wives Izzy Hoyland.

Ian Smith was Harold Bishop for 21 years and was pretty chuffed to be asked to reprise his role as the fuddy duddy step dad to Kylie Minogue?s Charlene. The now 83 year old can still remember his first day on set like it was yesterday.

?That is spooky, I remember knocking on the front door in Ramsay St and Kylie answered,? he says. ?I think she was dressed as a clown. They were all in there having a dress-up party of some sort.

?But look, do you know what? I just knew somehow that this was important.

?I had no idea why. I just knew this show was going to change my life.?

And it did.

?I did many years on stage, both in musical theatre and straight theatre,? he shares.

At the peak of its powers, Neighbours stars enjoyed, or endured, almost Beatle-esque hysteria. Smith had his own very Beatle moment at the Water Rats ball ? an exclusive British A-list party. He and on-screen wife Anne Charleston attended and were bowled over to be included in such illustrious company.

And then one of the Fab Four ? George Harrison ? sauntered over and asked Smith for his autograph.

?I just couldn?t believe it,? Smith exclaims. ?There was me giving a Beatle an autograph.

?Well, that?s been my most favourite story for the rest of my life. Honestly, I froze ? I can?t remember what he said, I was so starstruck.

?I don?t know if all the Beatles are Neighbours fans but I can certainly say he was.?

While getting Harold back was a coup, excitement levels were at fever pitch when it was revealed Minogue and Jason Donovan would be back as Charlene and Paul?s younger brother Scott Robinson.

Dennis says it was delightful to reunite with so many of the originals. After a few seconds of slight awkwardness the ensuing years just melted away.

?Working on a show like this you become such intimate tight friends,? he says.

?We were tight on and off screen. We used to work and play together. I?ve just been reminiscing about the mischief we used to get up to in the studio and on the weekends.?

Mischief ? do tell? From skateboarding down the corridors with on-screen brother Donovan to trying to get in the background of live news crosses to wave to their mum (Ten?s news production office used to be based at the Nunawading studio), it was mostly harmless fun.

Although regularly crashing the set of the Channel 10 children?s program The Early Bird Show with Darryl Cotton after big Fridays night on the town might have been pushing it.

?We?d probably party all night at clubs or whatever and then come in horribly strung out the next morning,? Dennis recalls.

?We?d literally not go to bed. Maybe have breakfast and then go to work.

?And then one of us would have the great idea of crashing The Early Bird Show. You could see the horror on Darryl?s face as we would walk into the studio very loudly and then we would just take over.?

And, the cheekiness is still around in these final days. If viewers look closely at the fridge in the Quill-Tanaka household, they might notice some naughty words. Turns out actors waiting to rehearse a scene often rearrange the magnetic letters into all sorts of interesting phrases.

Dennis also noticed the letters to Paul?s office at Lassiters Hotel are starting to come off ? the last S dropping off this past week.

?Wouldn?t it be great if every day another letter fell off and all we were left with was just three letters ? ASS?,? he laughs.

And ass is the perfect title for Paul. Or *******. Or villain. And that?s what Dennis will miss most about his long-term alter ego. It?s certainly what audiences missed when he returned to Erinsborough in 2004 after 12 years working away in the UK. Producers decided to redeem Paul, writing a storyline where a brain tumour was discovered and subsequently removed, along with his villainous tendencies.

?He became super squeaky clean and I went with that, because that?s my job,? Dennis shares.

?But I kept saying ?guys the audience hates Paul being nice?. Producers would say ?Yeah sure? probably thinking I was just not happy with my lot.

?A couple of months later and we were doing a charity event after the Black Saturday bushfires in front of a huge crowd.

?I had the microphone so I asked the crowd to put their hands up if they liked Paul being nice. About three hands went up. I looked over at the producers who were there as well, and gave them a little look.

?Then I said ?who likes Paul being nasty?? and everyone else?s hand in the building went up.

?I turned to the producers, with the audience as my witness, and said ?there?s your answer guys?.

?And from that point on they slowly started bringing him back to the way he is now. A bit of a *******.?

And while that ******* is retiring, Dennis has no plans for that in real life ? ?actors don?t retire, they die? Dennis quips ? and he jokingly, pleads ?Is there anybody out there who will give me a job??

He pauses when asked what?s the legacy he hopes the institution leaves.

?It?s funny ? it?s not what it?s going to leave, it?s more what it?s not going to leave,? he muses.

?I?m going to get a little political now. I?m sounding biased but this is a known fact that we have done incredible things for Australian tourism, and for the industry itself on every level. In mentoring and training, and giving people jobs. And setting trends and fashions.

?I keep bringing up the fact that we were the first production to come up with a model for us to get back to work during that first Covid lockdown.

?Little old Neighbours in Melbourne was responsible for all the production studios going back to work around the world.

?(Executive producer) Jason (Harbison) had phone calls every day from studios around the world asking how do we do this.

?At the end of the day, it is just a TV show and TV shows come and go, but because this has been so iconic and historic, it?s a shame that is not going to be able to continue what it has been doing for all of these years.?

Network Ten to partner with Channel 5 for three new drama projects:

Network Ten partners with the UK?s Channel 5 for three new drama projects? so why didn't the Brits help us save Neighbours?

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-10891309/Network-Ten-partners-UKs-Channel-5-three-new-drama-projects.html

Channel 10 will partner on three new local productions with Channel 5, the same UK broadcaster that refused to save Neighbours from the axe.

Neighbours was cancelled after Channel 5 decided in March not to renew its contract with production company Fremantle to finance and broadcast the Australian soap.

Now Channel 5 will partner with Network 10 and Fremantle on a trio of projects that will be filmed in Australia but feature British characters, and can be produced for a fraction of what Neighbours costs, reports TV Tonight.

Meanwhile, the beloved soap, which debuted in 1985 and launched the careers of superstars Kylie Minogue, Russell Crowe and Margot Robbie, amongst many others, ends production on Friday.

The news comes after Fremantle and Channel 5 had success with the four-part thriller Lie to Me, which screened on Channel 10 in November and starred former EastEnders star Charlie Brooks.

Neighbours' executive producer Jason Herbison created Lie with Me, which was a hit in the UK.

Daniel Monaghan, Channel 10's Senior Vice President of Programming and Content, said Channel 5 wants to make three more projects in a similar vein.

'What they did with Lie with Me, and what their intention is to do is [dramas] set in Australia but with British characters,' he explained.

'The lead in Lie with Me was a British actress from EastEnders [Brooks]. So that meant something to them because it was more of a hybrid.'

Beverley McGarvey, the Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer for Paramount ANZ, owners of Channel 10, said that Channel 5 wants to finance more British-made content, like the hit series All Creatures Great and Small.

'The investment they would make in a couple of series is nothing like the investment they would need to make in 260 episodes of Neighbours,' Ms McGarvey said.

Amongst the stars who began their career on Neighbours are Craig McLachlan, 56, who earned three Logie Awards while appearing in the series between 1987 and 1999; pop star Delta Goodrem, 37; and famed Hollywood actor Guy Pearce, 54.

Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, both 54, join a long list of former Neighbours stars lured back for the final episode, which also includes Ian Smith and Daniel MacPherson, alongside Mark Little and Paul Keane.

Kylie and Jason filmed their scenes for the much anticipated final episode in half a day on April 28.

The pair famously appeared as husband and wife Charlene and Scott Robinson on the long-running series.

According to sources close to the production, Kylie and Jason appeared in scenes with characters including Harold Bishop (Ian Smith), Jane Harris (Annie Jones) and Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis).

Producers revealed the scenes with Kylie and Jason were filmed in top secret.

'I told a couple of producers, a costume person, I did not tell any of the writers and I quietly wrote the scenes myself,' said Neighbours' executive producer Jason Herbison.

'I gave them the scenes and on the day the crew did not know until they [Minogue and Donovan] arrived and out came Scott and Charlene,' he said.

'It was very special.'

Neighbours announced that production would be ceasing on the long-running soap in a tweet back in March.

'We are so sorry to say that after nearly 37 years and almost 9,000 episodes broadcast we have to confirm that Neighbours will cease production in June,' the show wrote.

Network 10 addressed the end of the series in a statement to Australian media in March, admitting it had been a 'difficult decision'.

'Today, Fremantle confirmed that Neighbours will cease production in June, after nearly 37 years and almost 9,000 episodes,' a network spokesperson announced.

'This difficult decision came after the search for an alternative UK broadcast partner proved unsuccessful.'

The last ever episode will air on August 1 - and in Australia, it will appear on 10 Peach, where the show moved to back in 2011

Maybe they saw the planned storylines and decided enough is enough.

So, er, lads.. we're going to kill off a young character, bring back Finn somehow, and give Terese and Paul more affairs and drama with relatives of one or the other.

No thanks. We'll make some other shows, thanks.

This! The stories have been so bad for a quite a few years and has only gotten worse. I stopped watching back in November last year and not even slightly tempted back as it's ending.

The writers are getting really desperate now now wonder its been cancelled not a one of them can have a normal relationship questioning every meeting like they are all silly teenagers

then you have got the oh they survived the death scare only for a couples of days later theres an unforeseen relapse erinsburgh hospital would of been sued out of existance by now
and why isnt hendrix sueing the hospital for saying he was ok after the fire and now saying he will die on monday
not a one of them can go out the house without ending up in hospital

In a street of 10 houses there 3 doctors 2 police officers a school teacher a lawyer there was 3 cooks and a family that owned all the property in australia you think the writers couldnt think of any other job desriptions
but then again if they are not trying to kill each other they are fallling off things and hurting themselves so probably need all the police and docs but you would think they would all get sacked with all the crime that seems to
happen in front of their very eyes.

every stranger they meet ANYWHERE in the world turns out to be their son/daughter that nobody has ever heard of before.

they did once bring in an old woman who had lived at the bottom of the street for 50 years but as she wasnt a serial killer she soon disappeared .

it really has got rediculous

For some reason, scriptwriters are incapable of creating a believable, good exit for a character .. most of all the soap's exits are abysmal in my opinion

Neighbours plans official UK farewell tour after the show's big finale
A fitting celebration.

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a40226602/neighbours-uk-farewell-tour/

Neighbours will bow out in style with its very own UK theatre tour next year, Digital Spy can exclusively reveal.

The show's incredible 37-year history will be celebrated at Neighbours: The Farewell Tour, which is scheduled to take place across eight venues in March 2023.

Fans may remember that Neighbours had previously announced a special one-off Live In Conversation show for the programme's 35th anniversary in 2020.

This event was ultimately postponed due to COVID restrictions, but it has now been rebooted to be bigger and better in the form of the Farewell Tour.

While an official announcement is due within days, Digital Spy understands that the original show has finally been rescheduled with an upcoming London date.

Fans who have held onto their tickets for over two years will now get to enjoy the long-anticipated show, which brings together popular cast members to look back at Neighbours' history.

Seven other dates have also now been scheduled in for other venues across the country, with the tour expected to hit Manchester, Birmingham, Brighton, Southampton, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Cardiff.

Neighbours' production company FremantleMedia has been secretly working on the tour with live events company Maple Tree Entertainment.

Official details on venues and dates will be announced soon.

A Neighbours insider told Digital Spy: "The show looks set to be the ultimate celebration of Neighbours and a chance for fans to say their final goodbyes.

"The cast were touched by the outpouring of love from UK fans after Neighbours' cancellation was announced. Some of the best-loved stars will now be flying out to celebrate with fans in person."

Neighbours' cancellation was officially announced in March after Channel 5 withdrew as the show's UK broadcast partner.

An hour-long series finale will air in both UK and Australia on August 1.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 and streams on My5. In Australia, the show airs Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach and streams on 10 Play.

Neighbours legend Stefan Dennis in bits as filming wraps

https://www.rte.ie/entertainment/2022/0610/1304000-neighbours-icon-stefan-dennis-in-tears-as-filming-wraps/

Neighbours star Stefan Dennis says he "surprised himself" by becoming incredibly emotional on the last day of filming the long-running Australian soap opera.

The actor, who played the villainous Paul Robinson, said it was "a melancholy day" as he recalled experiences from the past 37 years, including encounters with the British Royal Family.

The show first aired in 1985 and follows the lives of those living and working in the fictional Melbourne suburb of Erinsborough, with Dennis as one of the original cast members.

Friday marked the final day of filming on the globally-recognised soap, with the final episode due to be broadcast on 1 August in Australia and on 3 August on RT?.

Speaking on the Australian breakfast programme Studio 10 to Irish presenter Tristan MacManus and co-host Sarah Harris, Dennis said he had had to keep a "very low profile" in order to avoid becoming "an absolute mess".

"It's a melancholy day for me," he said.

"I sort of closed the studio door behind me on my very last scene, my very last dialogue scene and... I suddenly surprised myself by getting incredibly emotional.

"I just kept to myself and went to my dressing room... so I'm keeping a very low profile today. I think I'll just be an absolute mess if I sort of hang around too long."

Dennis revealed that Britain's Diana, Princess of Wales and the Queen Mother had both been big fans of Neighbours and would specifically request tapes from the BBC in order to catch up on episodes missed during royal engagements.

He recalled that the Queen Mother had once snubbed the entire cast of the US sitcom Golden Girls at a meet and greet to talk to the Neighbours cast.

Dennis said he had received a standing ovation from thousands of people at Wembley Stadium at a Michael Jackson concert in 1992, where he had been invited to the VIP box alongside the Prince of Wales.

Fellow cast members paid tribute to the show in a specially curated video where they expressed gratitude for being an "iconic part of Australian culture".

The final episode will see fan favourites from throughout the years return to the cul-de-sac community of Ramsay Street to bid the soap farewell.

Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, who starred as power couple Charlene Mitchell and Scott Robinson in the 80s, are back for the finale where they will be joined by fellow A-lister Guy Pearce, reprising his role as Mike Young.

Also on board are Peter O'Brien who appeared in the show's first episode as Shane Ramsay, Ian Smith who played Harold Bishop, Mark Little who played Joe Mangel and Paul Keane who played Des Clarke.

Among those returning from the 00s era are Chris Milligan who played Kyle Canning, Morgan Baker as Callum Rebecchi, Natalie Bassingthwaighte who played Izzy Hoyland and James Mason as Chris Pappas.

Pippa Black who played Elle Robinson and her on-screen brother Jordan Patrick Smith who played Andrew Robinson will also return.

Olympia Valance who starred as Paige Smith in the latest era of the show will also return, alongside Jodi Anasta as Elly Conway, Zoe Cramond who played Amy Williams and Kate Kendall as Lauren Turner.

Ben Hall as Ned Willis, Olivia Junkeer who played Yashvi Rebecchi and Zima Anderson as Roxy Willis were also announced as returning.

The show is also credited for helping to launch the careers of other Hollywood stars including Margot Robbie, Liam Hemsworth and Russell Crowe.

And in an interview on "The Project", Stefan Dennis hints at a couple of extra returnees:

Neighbours star Stefan Dennis hints at two top-secret returns

Neighbours spoilers follow.

Neighbours star Stefan Dennis has hinted at two more top-secret returns for the soap's final episodes.

Fans know by now that Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan have both filmed scenes for the Ramsay Street send-off, with the soap also bringing back legends like Ian Smith, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Hollywood star Guy Pearce.

During an appearance on Channel 10's The Project in Australia this week, Stefan Dennis promised that the show's last episodes would be filled with nostalgia.

"The producers have tried to get back as many of the old school as possible," Dennis said.

While it's unlikely Bouncer the Dog will be making a comeback, Dennis did tease that there are major cameos that haven't been made public.

"The big ones that everyone has been hoping for has been Kylie and Jason," he acknowledged. "We've got Peter O'Brien (Shane Ramsay), Paul Keane (Des Clarke), the list goes on.

"There's even some that we don't know about yet? That's not just a secret for you, it's a big secret for us. Nobody knows anything."

https://twitter.com/theprojecttv/status/1535193159839453184?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5 Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1535193159839453184%7Ctwgr% 5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.digitalspy.com%2Fsoaps%2 Fneighbours%2Fa40256199%2Fneighbours-spoilers-stefan-dennis-hollywood-cameo%2F

When asked by the presenters to "take a stab" at who could be coming back, the actor teased: "There may be a Hollywood person and there might be singer-y person. But I don't know!"

Dennis only laughed as the presenters guessed that Margot Robbie and the Hemsworth brothers might be involved, but they are far from the only major stars to come out of Neighbours.

Some of the biggest names in TV and film today got their start on Ramsay Street, including Naomi Watts and Russell Crowe, as well as pop superstar Natalie Imbruglia.

Fans find out which familiar faces will be back on the Street later this summer!

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 and streams on My5. In Australia, the show airs Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach and streams on 10 Play.

Margot Robbie sent the sweetest gift to the Neighbours set on their final day of filming
She'll always remember her roots.

https://www.nowtolove.com.au/celebrity/neighbours/margot-robbie-neighbours-gift-73595

From Kylie Minogue to Liam Hemsworth, Neighbours has launched the careers of many international stars, but one in particular hasn't forgotten her roots.

In a post shared by Takaya Honda, he revealed that Margot Robbie had sent a thoughtful gift to the cast and crew to mark the end of an era as the final episodes were filmed.

https://www.instagram.com/reel/CeqFAHQBMPK/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=a6dc5483-e94f-4470-9f51-da4f7e9924c6

Taking to Instagram Takaya, who plays David Tanaka on the soap, revealed that the Hollywood heavyweight had sent 37 bottles of champagne to the Melbourne set.

"Like everything we did, we did it together. That's a wrap ♥️," he captioned the post.

"Thanks Margot for the champagne. 37 bottles for 37 years. @neighbours."

Margot was just 17-years-old when she moved to Melbourne to begin her acting career and landed the role of Donna Freedman.

In her three years on the show, she received two Logie Award nods before leaving to pursue a career stateside.

"I love that Aussies have a great reputation in Hollywood. I think it comes from having a good work ethic," she told TV WEEK in 2017.

"Neighbours helped me develop one ? it [the filming] moves quickly, and you learn that if you're not going to show up and do a good job, someone else will take it."

Whilst her character left Ramsay Street to pursue her fashion dreams in New York City, Margot went on to star in blockbusters including The Wolf of Wall Street, Suicide Squad and was even nominated for an Oscar twice for her films I, Tonya and Bombshell.

"If someone mentions Neighbours, the emotion I feel most is definitely nostalgia. I miss it so much - I miss being on the show, I miss being in Australia and having the show ever present. I just have the fondest memories," she said.

Neighbours was axed after Channel Five in the UK, the show's biggest financial backer in recent years, announced that it will not renew the program after this coming British summer.

"We are so sorry to say that after nearly 37 years and almost 9000 episodes broadcast we have to confirm that Neighbours will cease production in June," the show's Twitter account announced in March 2022.

"Following the loss of our key broadcast partner in the UK and despite an extensive search for alternative funding, we simply have no option but to rest the show.

"To our amazing, loyal fans, we know this is a huge disappointment, as it is to all of us on the team. We thank you for all your messages and support and promise to end the show on an incredible high. From here on, we are celebrating Neighbours."

Neighbours script producer Shane Isheev joins Hollyoaks
From Erinsborough to Chester.

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/hollyoaks/a40270541/neighbours-shane-isheev-joins-hollyoaks/

After 37 years on the air, Neighbours wrapped filming for the final time last week, and now the cast and crew are free to move on to other projects.

And we did not have long to wait before finding out where one of them is off to, as Digital Spy can exclusively reveal that Neighbours' script producer Shane Isheev is heading to our shores to join the team at Hollyoaks as story editor.

Speaking to us about the move, Shane said: "Many colleagues have said over the years I should work on Hollyoaks. It wasn't until I started watching the show regularly that I understood why. It has everything I love about serial drama. I feel extremely lucky to be moving from Erinsborough to Chester.

"I still had many stories I wanted to tell on Neighbours, but now I can't wait to share them with the Hollyoaks team.

"With the loss of Neighbours, fans might be looking for a new soap fix. I strongly encourage them, and all serial lovers, to check out Hollyoaks. Just like me, it won't be long before you're hooked."

During his time on Neighbours, Shane was responsible for some of the biggest storylines on the Channel 5 soap. These include the 35th anniversary wedding week episodes, the recent dramatic storyline involving Freya and Levi, and the current David story that is set to take another dramatic turn in the coming weeks.

Expect to see Shane make his mark on Hollyoaks later in 2022. Neighbours will air its final episode on August 1.

Hollyoaks now streams first on All 4, with new episodes dropping each weekday morning. The show airs Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, and at 7pm on E4.

DS article. Interview with script producer Shane Isheev:

Neighbours script producer Shane Isheev on show ending
"We just want it to be a celebration and for people to feel wonderful after watching it."

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a40370662/neighbours-script-producer-shane-isheev-show-axe-cancelled-stories/

After 37 years in the air, Neighbours will come to a close for good in a few week's time and the final scenes for the show have already been recorded.

While we don't know how the show will wrap up yet, although we do know that lots of old faces will be back to see it off, it is clear from recent months that it will be going out on a creative high.

One of the key people involved in bringing Neighbours to a close is the show's script producer, Shane Isheev, who is moving to Hollyoaks, and he has been chatting with Digital Spy about his time on the show, and how they tackled the monumental task of ending it.

How long did you know that the show was at risk of cancellation, and how did that impact you when it came to plotting long-term stories?

"We knew coming into the second half of last year that it was a possibility that it may wrap in June, but there was also hope that a new contract would come. So, it was in the back of our minds, but we were plotting as normal and just focusing on telling good stories. It wasn?t confirmed until the news broke and we found out like everyone else found out. And then it was a case of having to do a 180 with some of our stories and change our approach."

Was there ever the risk of the show coming to an abrupt end last year?

"From my perspective, it was business as usual. We did know at one point last year that our contract had come to an end and we were waiting to find out what the new one would be, and that was the extension that saw us through to June this year."

How was it trying to plan for things such as key events when the scheduling for the show went off track here and in Oz?

"The biggest concern for us what knowing exactly when Neighbours was going to air where. That was my biggest concern, making sure we knew what our season finales were and that we serviced both places as best we could.

"It was tricky. We like to keep things consistent with the real world, public holidays, and real-life events. And with the characters, we do try and stick to birthdays and anniversaries, and it got to the point where we weren?t sure anymore. So that all kind of went out of the window and we just focused on telling the best stories we possibly could."

Was it frustrating for you when Channel 5 dropped down to two episodes a week in 2020 while you were still business as usual?

"I wouldn?t say it was frustrating. We understood. There was so much uncertainty and productions around the world shut down, and so did we for three weeks. So, it wasn?t a shock and I understood them being conservative about it. It was when they maintained the two episodes and we were still going that I got concerned. More for the fans really as we know that the show works best when the show airs at the same time as all the fans can engage with the various podcasts and everything that are about. But no, I don?t blame Channel 5 for what they did because it was unknown territory."

Were there any stories for Neighbours that you were really keen to tell but didn?t have the chance to?

"We had so many plans, so many exciting things in the works. We?d started planting some seeds for things that went nowhere, and the season finale for 2022 was set to be really exciting and would have been iconic in Neighbours history. I?m always wary about revealing what could have been as you never know, if the show is revived in five to 10 years? time they might use them then, or I might like to use a few for Hollyoaks ? or a Neighbours spin-off. It?s always heartbreaking when there is a story that you can?t tell and that happened even before the show ended."

Are there any examples of stories from the past that you wanted to tell but couldn?t?

"I could tell you a hundred stories I wanted to tell over the years but a lot of the time the timing isn?t right. There are two that spring to mind. I always wanted to revisit Susan?s euthanasia story with her mum, how she would face that same dilemma today if she was faced with it again or if someone else was. We just couldn?t go there, the network was reluctant and in Victoria, the laws changed significantly around euthanasia so it wouldn?t have had the same impact.

"The other one I had my heart set on, but it just didn?t work out with timing was I really wanted to revisit Cody?s death with the then-current version of the Willis family. I always had this vision of Piper doing a podcast and tracking down the guys involved in the drug bust and the shooting that killed Cody all those years ago.

"Obviously, this is Neighbours, things would have gone wrong, the guys seemingly had been redeemed but they get too infatuated with Piper, and she finds herself in over her head ? I always loved revisiting the show?s past and putting a modern spin on it."

We have seen a fair few cast members leave Neighbours this year, were they always leaving, and did you already have plans of who could replace them?

"We had really planned until the end of the year so cast changes, like Jemma and Ben, we knew about before. So, it was very much the plan, and we didn?t really deviate from that after the end was announced.

"A good example is Jane?s son, Byron. He is a character that we would have got a lot of mileage out of, and he would have stuck around long-term. We had plans to bring in Jane?s ex, Vic too and we would have had a ball with that. We didn?t want to miss out on seeing some of those faces show up, so that?s why we still have Byron, and we still have Estelle ? just so we can see them. We had another really big story for Terese and Estelle that we sadly can?t tell now."

What about the Rodwell family? Did you have plans of where you wanted to take them?

"Well, the Rodwells are now the last new family on Ramsay Street, they were going to be our big new family and we had planned to grow them ? bring in some more kids. That plan was obviously changed when the show was rested, but they were a new fun working-class family.

"Wendy has been a hit judging by reactions online. You grow to love her. Wendy would have been one of those characters who is definitely a gossip, but she doesn?t thrive on it as people like Sheila did ? her heart is always in the right place. She always puts her foot in her mouth and that came from watching the actress in the police ball ? we took what Candice gave us and ran with it.

"She?s an amalgamation of so many classic characters, Lyn Scully, Valda, Sheila ? we wanted another busy body. The Rodwells were the first piece of the puzzle on what the next phase of the show would have been."

Where do you even begin with trying to draw something this big to a close?

"When we knew that Neighbours was going to be finishing up, Jason [Herbison] and I had a meeting with just the two of us and I went to pitch my version of the ending. I was ready with my pitch, so we started the meeting, he went first and told me his thoughts, even the final scene, and the final line, and when he told me I got goosebumps, burst into tears and it was just perfect. I didn?t even bother telling him mine as I just knew that is how I wanted the show to end too.

"I know that wrapping up a 37-year-old show is an impossible task to please everyone, but I thought the only path we could take was to think about what we would want to see at the end ? because Jason and I are both huge fans too. If I was just watching this at home and hadn?t been a part of it, I think I?d be chuffed with it as it?s got everything I wanted."

How did you approach the task of deciding on returning characters with so many to choose from?

"When it came to deciding who to bring back, and how we were going to honour the past, we wanted a similar feel to the 35th in the sense that are lots of easter eggs ? that people are already finding ? and from now until the end it is riddled with all that. If you think something is there as a nod to the past, then you are probably right.

"Jason asked for my wishlist, he had his, and we discussed who was on there ? it was extremely long I won?t lie. I got to the stage where I kept pushing for more and more, but Jason is the one who worries about the budget, and he stopped me and made me count who we had already got, and, well it was a lot ? it?s known that there are more than have been announced ? and it was a ridiculous number.

"Having said that, the numbers just kept growing and growing without us really even having to push it. Will everyone coming back have a major story? No, but I don?t think that was the point. I feel like we just want to see people again who we have loved over the years and even if it?s just a small cameo, it?s a thrill and it makes the whole last four weeks really special.

"It was a combination of what made sense for the story, as well as who we wanted to see back. Jason has always been big on only bringing people back if it makes sense, but we loosened that for this, and rightly so. And with a lot of them, if someone isn?t back, it wasn?t through lack of trying. Sometimes things just couldn?t be worked out with schedules as we had a very small window."

If there is any time for fan service, it?s now, right?

"Correct. We just want it to be a celebration and for people to feel wonderful after watching it."

Speaking of fan service, there have been some fans that have been name-dropped into the show for the final stretch. Was that your idea and how did that come about?

"It was. I started naming a few of our guest characters after fans who have been very active in the fan community and who had done a lot for the show, so I had started that before we knew the show was ending a little. But as soon as it was confirmed it was the end, I just did it even more.

"We name characters after people we know anyway, the last name from one person and first from another, and I just thought that now was the right time to do it to say thanks to some of the people who have helped keep the show going these last 37 years. I can?t wait for certain people to see or hear their names mentioned, it?s a lot of fun."

If you can, how would you sum up your years on the show?

"I really can?t, it?s still so surreal. I still have trouble believing that not only did I get the chance to work on the show, but I was part of the core team who wrapped it up. There are all these things that have happened along the way, and I still can?t believe it, it feels like a dream, and I still think I?ll wake up in true soap fashion.

"I remember when I first got the job on Neighbours and I thought I had missed out on working on the show in the golden eras, the '80s, some of the ?90s, and the Izzy era, but look at who we?ve got, and had back? Characters like Harold, Des, and Jane. And with Dee, when I got the job my first pitch was how to bring her back, not knowing that it was everyone?s first pitch!

"This has ended up being the perfect period for me to have worked on the show. And not just because of the characters we got to bring back. But also, the representation of diverse ethnicities and sexualities ? it?s just been absolutely perfect. Everything I wanted to watch as a fan happened."

How excited are you to be joining Hollyoaks, and how are you finding the idea of switching from one set of iconic characters to another?

"I?m equal measure nervous and excited. It is a new playground for me, but I am also nervous because I?m not used to dealing with so many regular characters. The amount that Hollyoaks has compared to Neighbours is quite the difference.

"The pace that Hollyoaks moves is a lot quicker, so that will take a bit to get my head around. But I?m really looking forward to it. There are quite a few heightened soap stories that I couldn?t do on Neighbours that I hope to do there, and the trick is trying to find something that they haven?t done yet. I?m really excited about the challenge."

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 and streams on My5. In Australia, the show airs Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach and streams on 10 Play.

Nowtolove.com.au article:

As the curtain closes on Neighbours, the iconic cast have reunited ahead of the finale
The last episode is set to air on August 1st.

https://www.nowtolove.com.au/celebrity/neighbours/neighbours-finale-reunion-73810

After 37 years, Neighbours is officially set to say goodbye when the final episode airs on August 1st.

Ahead of the bittersweet finale, the cast of the long-running soap reunited for one last hurrah as they celebrated nearly 40 years of the iconic series at a special event in Melbourne before it comes to a close.

Among the star-studded crowd were Ramsay Steet locals - both old and new - including Olympia Valance, who played Paige Smith from 2014 until 2018 in the series, and Ryan Moloney, who has portrayed Jarrod 'Toadfish' Rebecchi since 1995.

April Pengilly, the daughter of INXS rocker Kirk Pengilly, was also in attendance as she donned a bright pink frock for the occasion, as well as Bachelor star Tim Robards, who first appeared as a guest star in the role of Pierce Greyson before landing a full-time gig on the show.

Fans were left reeling after the shock announcement earlier this year that Neighbours was axed after Fremantle Media's major partner, the UK's Channel Five, decided to withdraw its partnership and ultimately stop funding the program.

After nearly 9000 episodes, the show will air a finale on August 1, 2022, which was filmed in recent weeks. The team at Neighbours are going all out for the production, going so far as to bring back Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan in their iconic roles as Charlene and Scott Robinson.

But as far as what exactly the undoubtedly emotional finale of Neighbours will entail, we'll just have to wait and see - though (thankfully) executive producer Jason Herbison has promised he won't be blowing up Ramsay Street in a blaze of glory.

"I would never, ever blow it up," Jason told TV Blackbox. "The ending will be a celebration of the past and the present, with the door very much left open for a future.

"Ramsay Street is eternal and I like to think it will live on in the hearts and minds of the viewers, long after the final scene."

DS article - Neighbours finale gets new airdate in both Aust (Thurs July 28) & the UK (Friday July 29):

Neighbours finale gets new airdate and primetime slot on Channel 5
It's the end of an era.

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a40482763/neighbours-final-episode-primetime-slot/

Neighbours will air in a primetime slot on Channel 5 for its final ever episode.

The show's finale was originally billed to screen on Monday, August 1, but it has now been brought forward to Friday, July 29 in the UK.

Channel 5 bosses have announced that the third-from-last Neighbours episode will also air that day in the usual 1.45pm and 6pm timeslots.

This will be followed by the big finale, broadcast as a double episode special at 9pm the same evening.

he Neighbours finale has also been rescheduled in Australia.

The show's home network Channel 10 has announced that it will air the final episodes in a 90-minute slot on Thursday, July 28 at 7.30pm, simulcast on Channel 10 and 10 Peach.

This means that Australian viewers will get to see the finale ahead of the UK audience.

Channel 5 has been airing episodes ahead of Australia all year, but 10 Peach has recently been catching up again by screening double episodes.

In a statement, Channel 5 teased: "In what is set to be a gripping and emotional finale, fan favourites from the past will be returning to Ramsay Street to celebrate with our Erinsborough locals, in a send-off that will have something for everyone, spanning all generations and decades from the opening scene in 1985, to the final episode in 2022.

"Further announcements will be made in the coming weeks about additional surprises to send off the iconic soap in style."

Neighbours last aired in primetime in 2020, with a week of post-watershed specials on Channel 5 for the 30th anniversary.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 and streams on My5. In Australia, the show airs Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach and streams on 10 Play.

Not sure why they have done this? Would rather have left it until the Monday.

Not sure if this is the reason, but I have seen it suggested that maybe it has something to do with the Commonwealth Games. The opening ceremony is on the afternoon of Thursday 28 July in Birmingham (4pm - 7:30pm local time), which means it will be overnight/early Friday morning in Aust. As the finale will be shown at 7:30pm in primetime here on both Ch10 & 10Peach, by having it on the Thursday night, it will be over before the Comm. Games actually begin (even though they are on Ch7 - & will most likely rate well...). Then with Aust now airing the finale on Thurs 28th, I assume that in response, Ch5 didn't want to wait till the following Monday to air it in the UK etc. That's the theory anyway...

Metro.co.uk article - Nell says goodbye:

Neighbours? Nell star Scarlett Anderson says farewell to ?friendly? co-stars in emotional new video and we?re not crying we swear

https://metro.co.uk/2022/07/05/neighbours-nell-star-says-goodbye-to-co-stars-in-new-video-ill-never-forget-them-16942905/?ito=newsnow-feed

Neighbours star Scarlett Anderson has reflected on her time on the show ahead of its untimely end.

The 9-year-old actress, who has played Toadie and Sonya Rebecci?s daughter Nell since she was a baby, described her Ramsay Street experience as a ?very long journey?.

?I?ve pretty much grown up on this show,? she said during an interview, shared on the Aussie soap?s official social media channel. ?Same with John [Turner, who plays Hugo Rebecci]. It?s like, sad, that it?s going to be finishing.?

You said it, Scarlett!

Despite the heartbreaking fact that Neighbours will imminently end, however, Scarlett added that she likes thinking about how ?grateful? she is to have had the experience ? and honestly, what an icon.

?I love thinking about how I should be grateful how it even started,? she said, ?and be happy that I had a really good time. And it was a really long time!?

https://twitter.com/neighbours/status/1544229597826334726?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5 Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1544229597826334726%7Ctwgr% 5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fmetro.co.uk%2F2022%2F07%2F05 %2Fneighbours-nell-star-says-goodbye-to-co-stars-in-new-video-ill-never-forget-them-16942905%2F

?I just want everyone to be happy about how it started, and how nice everyone was, and I just want to say thank you to them all because they were really nice and friendly to me when I was young and stuff.

?I kind of messed up my lines a bit, but they always had me, and whispered the lines to me or gave me good cues. I just want them to know I?ll never forget them?.

No, you?re crying.

Neighbours, as viewers know, is set to conclude later later this month, after Channel 5 controversially decided to drop it from their schedules in favour of ?original UK drama?, which the broadcaster claims has a ?strong appeal? for audiences.

The final month of episodes have been described as an on-air celebration of the show?s legacy and are thought to be must-see TV.

The last ever episode, a double episode special, will air on Friday July 29 in a primetime 9pm slot on Channel 5.

In the gripping and emotional finale, favourites from the past will return to Ramsay Street to celebrate with the locals.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1:45pm and 6pm on Channel 5.

Neighbours will get a send-off to remember later this month on Channel 5, as the finale episode gets a prime-time slot in a special night of celebration.

Neighbours: The Finale has been confirmed to air on Friday, July 29 at 9pm, followed by two special companion shows which celebrate the long-running soap's legacy.

As we look ahead to the show's endgame, Digital Spy recently caught up with Channel 5 commissioning editor Greg Barnett for an exclusive chat about all things Neighbours.

Greg has overseen Neighbours for the channel since 2010 and has helped to mastermind some of the most memorable moments in recent years, including the dramatic Channel 5 prime-time specials.

Here, he chats about the finale night, Kylie and Jason's returns, and exactly why Neighbours is coming to an end.

Neighbours has been at the heart of Channel 5's daytime schedule for 14 years. Is the channel sad to be losing the show?

"Yes, absolutely. We've loved having it, we've loved supporting it and we've loved the praise and critical acclaim we've had for supporting it.

"Ben Frow [Channel 5 controller] and I introduced the 10pm specials, which took the show out of its daytime slot into a place where former and new audiences could perhaps see it and re-engage ? they did!

"These 10pms evolved over the years we did them, from a simple stitch-together with some commercial music (we were praised for using Adele over a scene where one of the doctors died in the hospital car park in Toadie's wedding explosion episode), to "some" new material, then "all-new" material, then week-long strips (Endgame most recently) and of course the Erinsborough High My5 spin off.

"We've given it a lot of love and encouragement and so, yes, that is why it is sad to be losing it."

On a personal level, you've overseen the show for Channel 5 for over a decade and had input into storylines. How do you feel yourself about the show now ending?

"It's been a real privilege to work with such a talented cast and crew and I got to visit the production centre a fair few times ? to be involved, as you say, in thrashing out stories and add support as and where I could, and also to be shown how Fremantle were investing our element of the funding into things like new interior sets and the Ramsay Street backyards. I'm very grateful for all of that opportunity.

"At the same time, I'm terribly sad to see it go. It's again, such a privilege to be part of its send off ? and that is very significant, and, truthfully, rewarding.

"This isn't a series that is being axed because of poor ratings or performance. It's going out very much on a high. It deserves a fitting and fantastic ending ? and [Neighbours' executive producer] Jason Herbison and the team at Fremantle Australia have absolutely delivered. I really hope viewers will not be disappointed."

Once the decision to end Neighbours was made, did you have much input into the finale planning?

"Jason Herbison and I agreed that the show ending warranted something very special. We discussed who might return and what we might do.

"You can't blow up Ramsay Street for example, because real people live on it and in any event, that wouldn't be the right thing to do given how loved the show is, how far it has come and the ethics that lie at its very heart.

"Naturally there was a list: 'Could we get XXX?? Do you think YYY would come back?' Once we'd agreed what the suitable end would be, it really was over to Jason to persuade everyone to return. All praise to him."

There was some scepticism over whether big names like Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Guy Pearce would return. Were you surprised they agreed to come back?

"I know from the Be A Star On Neighbours competition we did back in 2010, that Kylie's affection for the show and everything it did for her is genuine and sincere. She recorded special messages for us and granted us gratis use of her clips in the feature programmes we did, with her blessing. I remember thinking, 'That tells you something'.

"Jason Donovan, I believe, had always said he would only return if Kylie did, so I think we all just hoped the stars and their diaries would align.

"Jason Herbison kept saying on our Monday catch-ups that he was trying to pull it off, then one day he rang me and said that they'd both returned to Pin Oak Court (the real location of Ramsay Street) the day before, and their scenes were in the can. Then he rang me to confirm Guy Pearce was returning for three episodes.

"What I think it is important to say of these returnees is that they were adamant that the final episode of Neighbours should not be centred around them. They were extremely recognising of the fact that there is a cast of characters that have been in Erinsborough for much longer than they were and this should be reflected in terms of their contributions."

Was it always the plan to air the finale in primetime? Can we expect it to be similar to previous post-watershed episodes, with a special edit and commercial music?

"It was Ben Frow's idea to play it in peak. He asked me did I think we should do it, then as soon as I'd given my answer, asked me for two further support programmes to make a night of it.

"I can confirm that the UK finale will be unique in that it is a specially-created hour with a bespoke super-tease (voiced by Stefan Dennis) and yes, there will be commercial tracks, the most we've ever used in one episode. A mix of contemporary and classic, but each one fitting and designed to enhance the viewer experience."

Is there anything you can tease about the final episode? There have been lots of rumours, but are there any surprises in store?

"Yes, of course we've kept things up our sleeves. There will be further cast returning but we are absolutely sworn to secrecy."

What can you tell us about your broader plans for the finale night?

"As previously mentioned, once Ben and I had discussed playing the finale at 9pm, he asked for two further programmes. The first, Neighbours: Made Me A Star, tells the story of how a daily Australian drama series launched the global careers of a galaxy of stars, and what they then went on to do.

"The production team and cast have been really supportive, so I am delighted to report there are great interviews and anecdotes in there, classic clips and even one or two audition tapes. We even interviewed the casting director to get the full lowdown on how the now-stratospheric stars once were. They'll be watching through their fingers. You really don't want to miss it!

"We're then also celebrating the show's pop music career successes with an hour of pop-up videos and impressive facts and stats from the likes of Kylie, Jason, Holly, Delta, Natalie, Stefan etc. That will be called Neighbours: All The Pop Hits & More; Especially For You.

"There'll be a specially created "countdown" in the final week, a bespoke channel ident and Alan Fletcher (Dr Karl Kennedy) will be the channel's continuity announcer for the night, so I really hope our fans think we've done them proud."

Australia is getting the finale one day before the UK. Would a same-day airing have worked better?

"I think any solution would create a headache for fans across the world, whichever way it went. The show started in Australia, and to be honest I think it's a big statement for Ten to simulcast it with 10 Peach as that's where it all began for them when they took the series ? so that's fitting.

"We've agreed that the official territory Neighbours fan sites will not run spoilers until everyone has run it ? which I hope extends out to RTE and our Republic of Ireland fans, who I think are getting it the following Wednesday, and should afford loyal viewers the opportunity to avoid spoilers."

There was an outpouring of love for Neighbours once the cancellation was announced, including a petition, celebrities speaking out, coverage on the news and live daytime shows. What did you make of that at the time?

"I think we all hoped it would. When we launched the Be A Star On Neighbours competition, I remember being blown away by how much pick up that got. We were on GMTV, BBC Breakfast News, the tabloids, the broadsheets, the radio, everywhere.

"Support for everything we've ever done with Neighbours since has always been noticeably huge, so, at first it was no surprise that the news we were losing it would cause such a stir, but it's a testament to all the hard work of each and every person involved with it at every level, everywhere, that it did."

There's a feeling among some of the fans that more could have been done to save the show. From your perspective, were all options explored?

"As was reported in the press, the show had been losing considerable amounts of money for Channel 5 every year since the broadcaster acquired it and it became a real problem. The business couldn't continue to lose money."

Can you share any other details of your involvement in the show over the years and what you're most proud of?

"There's such a lot to be proud of, because there's such a lot that we did. There's actually a very small group called "Team Australia" internally at Channel 5 that meets weekly to support our continuing dramas.

"They're made up of people that work in marketing, press, viewer insights, presentation, social media etc and with their help we ran two huge competitions, created three 10pm outings, then a week-long strip and then the My5 exclusive Erinsborough High.

"We flew cast over more frequently, they did much more press and TV, accepted lots of awards, which included scooping all 5 of the Radio Times Soap Awards in 2020. That was definitely a highlight.

"The production team in Nunawading pioneered continuing their operation during the COVID pandemic and shared their intel with the UK soaps, they created and cast the first gay marriage in Australian serial drama, then cast transgender and Down's Syndrome acting talent and were the first to cast talent with a cochlear implant.

"So to be part of all of that has made me proud ? and on a personal level I created the Lassiters boiler explosion 10pm drama climax where the characters of Josh Willis and Daniel Robinson were both trapped by a falling beam. Josh of course tragically died. It was very rewarding to see that episode top the ratings charts both for Channel 5 and 10 Peach."

Channel 5 is continuing to work with Australia's Channel 10 and Neighbours' production company Fremantle on new projects. Can you tell us anything about that?

"Indeed I can. We've just commissioned two further dramas from Fremantle Australia and in partnership with Ten. Production will start on Riptide this week and I'm absolutely thrilled to have secured Jo Joyner in the lead role as Alison.

Joining Jo is Ciar?n Griffiths and Australian actors David Berry, Peter O'Brien, Ally Fowler, Pia Miranda, rising stars Benny Turland, Asher Yasbincek, and Yazeed Dahar and newcomers Benjamin Samaddar and Sonya Suares.

"It's a psychological thriller and will be filmed in Melbourne. Alison's life is plunged into despair when her new Australian husband vanishes after a morning surf. Did he get caught in a dangerous riptide ? or is there more to his disappearance than meets the eye?

"You'll have to stay tuned for an announcement on the second drama project. What I can say is that it will be filmed this year, again, in Melbourne, but the scripts are just being finalised so for now I have to keep tight lipped. We've secured an incredible headline name for the role. It's very, very exciting."

Prior to the Neighbours cancellation, the fans had hotly debated the decision to drop episodes and fall behind Australia during COVID, as well as taking episodes off over Christmas. Do you have any thoughts on that?

"When the COVID outbreak hit, we had no idea what the impact would be in terms of whether production would be possible, so the decision to reduce transmissions was made to ensure we never ran out of episodes. Thankfully, it didn't last for long.

"The decision to take Neighbours off over Christmas was really for two reasons. Cast and crew needing a break in production meant we couldn't always guarantee we would be able to deliver Christmas week episodes, and also, scheduling was always inconsistent over the festive period and fans would invariably complain at the changing time slots."

Does Home and Away still have a bright future on the channel and is there anything you can tease about what's coming up in Summer Bay?

"Yes, absolutely. As we speak we are right in the middle of the PK murder saga, which is making life very difficult for Dean and it's terrific to see how the drama plays out there.

"Someone is going to get shot, and a couple of new faces are about to arrive in the Bay, some of whom will have residents and viewers on tenterhooks in terms of their true intentions.

"There are massive storylines set to roll out later this year which will involve some of our most beloved characters, including Marilyn.

"I can't say more than that, but there'll be plenty of teasers and clips on the UK Home and Away Facebook page as we head towards the show's 35th anniversary next year and of course we'll be continuing to support with promos and cast visits. Exciting times."

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 and streams on My5. In Australia, the show airs Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach and streams on 10 Play.

Neighbours star Rebekah Elmaloglou shares UK soap ambition after show axe
From Ramsay Street to...?

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a40676988/neighbours-terese-willis-rebekah-elmaloglou-uk-soap/

Neighbours' final episode is just days away from airing, so it seems fitting that the cast are reflecting on their time in Erinsborough ? and what might lie ahead for them in the future.

One of those stars is Rebekah Elmaloglou, who plays Terese Willis on the Aussie soap, with the actress admitting that she isn't quite ready to quit soapland just yet.

Ahead of viewers' last ever trip to Ramsay Street, which will air in the UK next Friday (July 29), Rebekah revealed that she has "always wanted to play an Aussie cop".

And she's hopeful that a series in the UK would welcome her aboard to do just that.

"I love British cop shows," said, angling for a Happy Valley stint. "My husband and I are addicted to Happy Valley with Sarah Lancashire. We love those sorts of shows, so I'd love to play a detective or a cop in one of those types of shows."

Rebekah is also open to joining a British soap, too, calling the UK's love of all things soap "massive".

"They've got some soaps in England, so to me they've got a huge, popular idea, massive," she said. "Go and work on a soap in the UK, why not?"

As for which fictional town she'd like to pay a visit to, the Neighbours icon is keeping an open mind, happy to visit anywhere from Walford to Weatherfield.

"I don't know which one, they're all amazing ? and they've all got such longevity like Home and Away and Neighbours had. There's quite a few, isn't there?

"There's EastEnders, Coronation Street, Hollyoaks, and Emmerdale. I mean, it's just amazing. I don't know, whoever would have me really!"

Watch this space!

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 and streams on My5. The series finale will air in the UK on July 29 at 9pm on Channel 5.

In Australia, the show airs Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach and streams on 10 Play. The series finale will air in Australia on July 28 at 7.30pm, simulcast on 10 and 10 Peach.

I have been watching Neighbours, with a few breaks, from the very beginning. I remember Des praying for Daphne to survive ? G? day God, Des Clarke here??. Kerry being shot by duck hunters, Toadie and Dees wedding and numerous arrivals of new characters who were somehow related to someone already on the street. Even more memories come back, like Harold being swept off the rocks and turning up years later as Ted, and a more lighthearted one of Joe burying a casserole in the garden and holding a funeral in case the contents contained Katie?s lost rabbit, (it didn?t)!
Thanks for all the years Neighbours.

10 Neighbours stories that were axed after soap's cancellation
Things could have been so different.

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a40908845/neighbours-axed-storylines/

Most fans agreed that Neighbours had a fitting ending when the heartwarming final episode aired last month, but getting to that point wasn't easy for the show's writers and storyliners.

Channel 5 announced its decision to cancel the show in February, leaving the soap's team with just four months to map out and film the finale.

As you'd expect with any long-running continuing drama, there were plans for huge storylines beyond that point which sadly had to be scrapped ? as we've heard in recent interviews from some of our Neighbours favourites.

Here, we're rounding up 10 storylines that fell by the wayside or were axed altogether.

1. Karl and Susan's money worries

The beginning of the year featured a devastating setback for the Kennedys when Karl foolishly invested their life savings into Montana Marcel's new start-up company. The money was lost when Montana was arrested, leaving Susan furious with Karl.

At the time, many fans suspected that this storyline had been specially written to set up the final weeks of Neighbours and a possible departure for Karl and Susan.

The opposite turned out to be true, as the storyline ? which would have run for longer ? was largely forgotten about once the nostalgia of the final months kicked in.

2. David's shock departure

Before the axe fell on Neighbours, Takaya Honda had decided that 2022 would be his final year in the role of David Tanaka. This wasn't announced to fans, and plans for him to be written out were ultimately scrapped when the show was cancelled.

David's dramatic final months in Erinsborough, which included Gareth Bateman's death and being sent to prison, were all originally intended to lead up to his departure from the show.

In a recent chat with Digital Spy, Takaya explained: "The story would have gone on for longer and it would have been different. They've had to change things to shorten it, but hopefully it's still had the same impact.

"Even though it's shortened ? and I only have a vague idea of what they had planned if it kept going ? I don't think the audience will feel robbed of that story having closure.

"There was still so much room, within the on-screen time we had, to tell the story fully and in an enjoyable way. It wasn't any less of an exciting rollercoaster ride."

3. Mackenzie's happy ending

Georgie Stone, who played Mackenzie Hargreaves, also told Digital Spy that 2022 was likely to have been her final year on the show regardless of whether it continued or not.

Reflecting on how the Neighbours axing news leaked before cast were told, Georgie explained: "It's not fun to find out that you're losing your job via social media.

"I think I was going to leave at some point this year anyway, but I was sad that there wouldn't be future generations of young actors who get to have this experience on the show."

The show's team had tentative plans to give Mackenzie a hopeful new chapter after the tragic death of her husband Hendrix Greyson. With Hendrix dying just a few weeks before Neighbours ended, there wasn't time to explore this on screen.

Script producer Shane Isheev tweeted in June: "[Hendrix's death] was planned before we knew the show was ending because we were losing the actor. And the beautiful Georgie also wanted Mack to have the FULL soap experience.

"Trust me, had we continued, we had plans for Mack to find love again and have her happily ever after."

4. Byron as a regular

Jane Harris's son Byron Stone arrived on screen in early July, but left again before the finale. Neighbours was axed after Joe Klocek had been cast in the role, so he would have played the character either way.

The original plan would have seen Byron move onto Ramsay Street as a regular character, with some big storylines planned for him.

Shane Isheev told Digital Spy: "He is a character that we would have got a lot of mileage out of, and he would have stuck around long-term."

5. Victor's arrival shakes up life for Jane

It would have been a busy year all round for Jane's family, as Isheev also confirmed that plans were in the works for Nicolette and Byron's father Victor to join Erinsborough.

There wasn't time to explore this storyline before Neighbours ended, so the plot had to be scrapped.

Charlotte Chimes, who played Nicolette Stone, later told Digital Spy: "It's a shame that a few things that I knew were coming up for [Nicolette] aren't happening now, as I would have loved to have been able to enjoy those stories.

"Nicolette's dad was going to be coming and we didn't have time for that. That was one thing I was really looking forward to ? exploring the Jane and Nicolette dynamic and how the dad would affect that."

In a separate chat with Chatterbox Radio, Isheev explained: "We even know who we wanted to play that role. Vic would have come in and been a bit of a charmer. I think, if Clive and Jane had stayed together, he probably would have tempted Jane away from Clive. Maybe putting the moves on Wendy and charming Vera.

"Karl and Susan lost all that money with the Montana storyline. He would have hooked into that and maybe even made things worse for them."

6. The slow road to Paul and Terese's reunion

Let's face it, the Neighbours team were always going to reunite Paul and Terese before the show ended. However, some fans questioned the execution of the plot, coming so soon after Paul had cruelly schemed to destroy Terese's professional reputation following their split.

In his post-finale chat with Digital Spy, executive producer Jason Herbison confirmed that there would have been a much slower build-up to the 'Praise' reunion if the show had continued.

Herbison explained: "In a perfect world we would have taken longer to reunite them. But with Paul, I think it's a case of better the devil you know.

"Terese hasn't always walked a straight line and they are each other's equal. I'm glad I reunited them and I don't think Paul will ever change. But as Terese wrote on her note, she accepts that. That doesn't mean she won't end up ripping up the note!"

7. An extra Rodwell

Neighbours bosses had plans for at least one extra member of the Rodwells when they first devised the family.

However, with limited screen time available to give the clan when Neighbours was axed, this character was removed from scripts and the team chose to introduce just one child of Andrew and Wendy.

Candice Leask, who played Wendy, recently told Digital Spy: "Initially there was meant to be a younger son. Then when we had an end date, they decided they were just going to have Sadie as the daughter."

8. Wendy's past revealed

Wendy caused a stir with her eager-to-please ways when she first moved to Ramsay Street. However, there were reasons in Wendy's backstory to explain this attitude, which viewers never got to find out about.

Candice Leask told us: "Wendy's storyline was going to develop and unravel. They were going to explore why she was the way she was. It would have been cool to find out why she wanted everyone to like her. I think she was full of anxiety when she went to talk to people."

9. More drama for Terese and Estelle

Terese's mother Estelle was another character introduced at the eleventh hour for a limited run, but original plans for the show's future would have seen her feature in a different storyline.

Shane Isheev told Digital Spy: "We didn't want to miss out on seeing some of those faces show up, so that's why we still have Byron, and we still have Estelle ? just so we can see them.

"We had another really big story for Terese and Estelle that we sadly can't tell now."

10. Erinsborough earthquake

Shane Isheev has also confirmed that David's prison storyline was originally supposed to feature some familiar faces from the show's past, including 2016 villain Jacka Hills and fan favourite Darcy Tyler.

He told Chatterbox Radio: "One of the original ideas I had for sending David to prison was him meeting some of the past villains of the show.

"We were working to potentially doing an earthquake, which would have resulted in a big mass breakout in the prison. That was also an opportunity to spruce up some of the sets in Erinsborough.

"I wanted to do a mass prison breakout, where iconic villains from Neighbours past team up and wreak havoc on the show."

Neighbours has now come to an end, but catch-up episodes are available via My 5 (UK) and 10 Play (Australia).

Former EastEnders star Jo Joyner finishes filming new drama with Neighbours stars
Riptide is coming to Channel 5 soon.

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a40955104/eastenders-jo-joyner-riptide-neighbours-ben-turland/

EastEnders' Jo Joyner has wrapped filming on her new drama Riptide, and she has shared some snaps from her time on the show while telling us what a lovely time she had filming it.

Taking to Instagram to share her experience about what it was like filming in Melbourne, Jo said the city would "forever hold a special place in my heart".

"It's been an intense shoot, the fastest pace with the most chilled of crews. I've fallen in love with Melbourne's friendly people, its urban architecture, endless art and graffiti, incredible food, and welcoming vibe.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CheqYjwhs_-/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=85e19fba-b07a-4b62-a0d2-873fa2f95719

"This job was made all the better by the opportunity it gave to catch up with family we haven't seen for many years."

Accompanying the positive words are some photos from her time in Australia, and Neighbours fans will see some familiar faces with both Ben Turland (Hendrix Greyson) and Scott Major (director and Lucas Fitzgerald star) amongst them.

Ben and Scott are not the only Erinsborough locals on the show as Peter O'Brien (Shane Ramsay), Ally Fowler (Zoe Davies/Nina Williams), and Pia Miranda (Karen Oldman) are all also part of the cast.

As for the plot of Riptide, it focuses on Amanda (Joyner) who has to deal with her husband vanishing while out for a morning surf. While many thought he had died after being caught in a riptide, there may be more to what happened than anybody realises.

Riptide is the first production to be filmed in the studio that was home to Neighbours before filming wrapped for good earlier this year.

It is the second joint drama venture between Channel 5 and Australia, and it is once again helmed by Jason Herbison. The last show, Lie with Me, aired last year and also featured an Eastenders actress, that time Charlie Brooks, alongside Neighbours alumni Phoebe Roberts, Brett Tucker and Caroline Gillmer.

Neighbours has now come to an end, but catch-up episodes are available via My 5 (UK) and 10 Play (Australia).

The Neighbours farewell tour's strong ticket sales in the UK has resulted in a "one-off special event" being announced for Melbourne, Australia next year.

Kicking off in March, cities such as Manchester, Cardiff and Edinburgh will play host to at least five cast members from the cancelled Aussie soap as they roll back the years in packed-out venues.

Annie Jones (Jane Harris), Ryan Moloney (Toadie Rebecchi), Jackie Woodburne (Susan Kennedy), Alan Fletcher (Karl Kennedy) and April Rose Pengilly (Chloe Brennan) will all appear.

On Tuesday (August 23), Neighbours confirmed that the tour will also be visiting Australia next April, with ticket details available soon.

On the accompanying poster, it was stated that the full cast for this show will be revealed in due course.

In June, Maple Tree Entertainment producer Dean Elliott said of the UK tour: "When Neighbours: Live in Conversation sold out within 24 hours, we knew that the love for the show could see it tour the UK, and there is no better time to take to the road than to mark the end and to honour its rich and lengthy history.

"We can't wait to put on a show that the fans will love and deserve."

Neighbours to return to TV screens, months after it was axed
Five months after the final episode of popular TV show Neighbours went to air, the long-running soapie has been thrown a lifeline.

Neighbours has been thrown an unexpected lifeline.

Five months after the final episode of the popular TV soap went to air, producers Fremantle have secured Amazon Freevee and Prime Video as international partners.

The move will see the show brought back to life, with Channel 10 to broadcast in Australia.

It is major news considering the global headlines when news broke the show had been shelved after a 37 year run.

Fremantle Australia CEO Greg Woods said: ?The love for Neighbours is undeniable and we have been determined to explore every possible avenue to bring it back for loyal fans across the world.

?We are beyond thrilled to have secured this landmark deal with Amazon Freevee, along with Network 10 in Australia, long-term and passionate supporters of the show,? he said.

?We will be going back into the writing room immediately, and production for this wonderful series will begin next year. Neighbours has been so important for the Victorian production community, and along with our partners, will provide new opportunities on both sides of the camera. We cannot wait to get started.?

Actors Jackie Woodburne, Alan Fletcher, Stefan Dennis and Ryan Moloney will return to the show with more cast to be announced.

Executive producer Jason Herbison returns to the production at Fremantle and Rick Maier as EP at Ten.

Production is slated to commence early next year, with a world premiere scheduled for mid-2023.

The show will continue to be filmed at the Nunawading, Melbourne, studios at which it has been based since its launch nearly four decades ago.

Melbourne?s Pin Oak Court is the location for the outside scenes of fictional Ramsay Street, Erinsborough.

?We are absolutely delighted to welcome Neighbours back home to Network 10, and while we loved the finale earlier this year and appreciated the incredible support from the cast, crew and fans, we continued to hold a small glimmer of hope that one day it would be possible to resume the series,? Network Ten boss Beverley McGarvey said.

?We are grateful for the tenacity and determination displayed by Fremantle in securing a new production partner so our association could continue.

?A much-loved stalwart of our program schedule for over 35 years, we can?t wait to bring back the perfect blend of soap and sunshine to Australian audiences which will also add a fantastic boost to the Victorian and wider production community.?

The finale episode of Neighbours drew a national audience of more than 1.48 million viewers when it aired in July.

It saw the return of much-loved former cast members, including Guy Pearce, Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Margot Robbie and Natalie Imbruglia.

The show was axed when Channel 5 in the UK did not renew its production deal with Fremantle.

It had previously aired for decades on the BBC.

And now also from news.com.au:

The iconic Australian TV show ended in July after 37 years after Fremantle failed to find it a new home.

The long-running soap will air on Channel 10 - its old home - and will be available to stream for free on Amazon Freevee in the UK and US.

The revitalised series will also be available ad free on Prime Video in Australia and New Zealand seven days following the free to air viewing.

Hundreds of thousands tuned in around the world to bid farewell to Ramsay Street - but it turns out it was merely a goodbye for now.

Fans reacted with glee at news the show was making a return.

?Oh my actual god!!! Crack open the fizz. This is the happiest day ever!! The mourning is over. It?s coming baaaaaaaack!!!!!!! Yessssssssss,? wrote one superfan.

?Wait, what?! Omg is this really happening?!? wrote another fan, Sharyn.

?I am actually crying tears of joy....thanks soooooo much for this. I cannot wait. Thanks to everyone for make this happen,? one delighted viewer said.

?Neighbours has captivated its audience for nearly 40 years, building a dedicated and loyal following for the lives and stories of the characters on Ramsay Street,? said Lauren Anderson from Amazon Studios.

?With the power of streaming, we?re able to offer a catalogue of thousands of Neighbours episodes for new audiences to discover this legendary series and current fans to relive their favorite moments.

?We look forward to immersing the audience in new Ramsay Street experiences when we relaunch the show next year for Amazon Freevee and Prime Video customers.?

Jennifer Mullin, global CEO of Fremantle, said: ?Neighbours is a unique series with a powerful connection with its fans across the world. We cherish the show and all those who have been part of its incredible story over many decades, so we are thrilled that we have found a new home with Amazon Freevee.

?Thanks to the innovative Amazon Freevee platform, many classic episodes will be available to fans, and Neighbours will go back into full production in Australia early next year, providing our fans with new episodes.

?This partnership with Amazon Freevee marks an exciting new chapter, and we look forward to collaborating with them, along with our long-term and valued partner in Australia, Network 10.?

More to come.

DS article - interview with 'Neighbours boss Jason Herbison':

Neighbours boss Jason Herbison shares secrets of the show's return
"I hope there will be many familiar faces."

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a42011762/neighbours-jason-herbison-return-interview/

Neighbours spoilers follow.

Move over, Harold Bishop and Dee Bliss ? Neighbours has pulled off the biggest "back from the dead" plot twist in its history.

The beloved Australian soap shocked everyone this week by announcing that it'll be making a surprise return in 2023, with a new home for UK viewers on free streaming service Amazon Freevee.

Less than four months after the historic finale episode, the Neighbours team are now making plans for a new series and have already secured the returns of legendary cast members Stefan Dennis (Paul Robinson), Jackie Woodburne (Susan Kennedy), Alan Fletcher (Karl Kennedy) and Ryan Moloney (Toadie Rebecchi).

While many further details are understandably being kept under wraps for now, Neighbours' executive producer Jason Herbison has shared some further exciting gossip in an exclusive new chat with Digital Spy.

This week's news has taken everyone by complete surprise. Were you aware this was a possibility when the finale aired, or have these developments kicked off more recently?

"We always said we were resting the show and hoped it would return one day. I didn't know how far in the future that might be or if I would even be involved.

"However, the response to the finale was phenomenal and Amazon Freevee approached us about a new chapter. It was unexpected and amazing ? the most incredible plot twist ever."

We've heard that you personally visited Stefan, Jackie, Alan and Ryan last week to share the news and invite them back on board. Can you tell us a bit about those conversations? Were you confident they'd all come back?

"It was a memorable morning. It was such wonderful news that I wanted to tell them in person. I joked that it was a bit like The Amazing Race because I planned it all out on a map, figuring out how best to dash around Melbourne.

"I started with Jackie, who lives around the corner, and made way my to Stefan, Alan and Ryan. It was special and emotional. I thought they would say yes and they did. I think it was meant to be ? they all happened to be home!"

The rest of the cast seem as surprised as us! Will you be reaching out to other familiar faces in the coming weeks, or will you be resetting with a largely new cast?

"I hope there will be many familiar faces. As we've said, this is all very new and fresh. It was a mark of respect to approach Jackie, Alan, Ryan and Stefan first and I knew everyone would understand that.

"We just need some time to reset and plan the next chapter. It's been such a tightly held secret and very few people have been in the know, even behind the scenes. It was my shaky hand that shot the video ? that's how tight the circle has been!"

Are you prepared for the possibility that certain cast, and particularly the younger stars, may have landed new work and may not want to come back?

"Neighbours has always been a mix of the familiar and the new. It's a talent pipeline, on screen and off, and I'm sure that spirit will continue. I know that some young cast members have moved on and I'm always happy for them to do so. I'm proud of each and every one of them."

Can you confirm at this stage whether you still have the Nunawading studios (location of the Lassiters backlot and the Ramsay Street backyard sets) and Pin Oak Court (real-life location of Ramsay Street)?

"We still have the Nunawading studios. The backlot is standing and the sets are in storage. Lassiters has a few weeds but we'll fire up the lawnmower and the four star rating will be restored!

"We hope to return to Pin Oak Court, but we're prepared either way. This is a wonderful new era and if we have to make changes, I see it as an exciting opportunity."

Can you confirm whether we'll still have the daily five-episodes-per-week format or something different?

"We have many more announcements ahead, so stay tuned. I can assure you there are a lot of new episodes on the way. We have been a big part of people's lives and we hope to be again."

You and the rest of the team created the perfect finale just months ago. How do you feel about having to undo some of that work and the happy endings for certain characters?

"We gave everything we had to the finale and I'm grateful to Channel 5 and Network 10 for getting behind it. Thanks to their support, we went out with a bang rather than a whimper, which has led to this revival. At the time it seemed like it was my one shot to say goodbye and do it justice.

"But life is full of surprises and here we are, sooner rather than later. We will make the most of it. I don't see us having to undo any work, it's more a case of ? what could happen next? The answer is ? lots of amazing things!"

Now that you're heading back into the writers room, will you be using some of the ideas that you didn't have time for last time around, or going in completely fresh with new ideas?

"I will be approaching it fresh. I'm sure there are some ideas from the past that still have currency, though I'm aware some already leaked out! There's something to be said for wiping the board clean and starting anew. I have a starting point and I look forward to assembling a team and getting stuck into it."

On a personal note, how did you feel about coming back and steering the ship again? Was it something you had to give some thought to?

"I've always loved the show. It's directly linked to my childhood, which I know is the same for many viewers. I am always going to help it succeed if I can. I also feel it's a huge privilege as I truly believe the show has the power to make lives better, even if it's just entertainment.

"I will soon have a great team around me, though for now, I have my incredible Series Producer Andrew Thompson. Nobody does it alone.

"I'm also fortunate to be in a position to write and produce other projects. I have two new mini-series coming up for Channel 5 and Network 10, Riptide and Heat, and I'm very passionate about these too."

Streamers seem to have shied away from the soap genre and doing daily episode drops until now, even though there's so much potential there. Do you hope this can be a pioneering move that maybe paves the way for other streaming services to explore soaps?

"Absolutely. Neighbours has broken so much new ground over the years and it feels natural that we'd be doing it again. But whether a show is on a streamer or terrestrial TV, we are nothing without our viewers."

Neighbours returns in mid-2023 with new episodes streaming free on Amazon Freevee in the UK and US. Network 10 will retain first-run rights in Australia for the new series.

Neighbours to air hundreds of new episodes after shock return deal
The format that fans know and love will be back.

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a42041122/neighbours-return-deal-details/

Neighbours spoilers follow.

Neighbours' future will be secure for at least two years following its surprise revival, Digital Spy has learned.

The popular soap will return to screens next year with a new home for UK viewers on the free streaming service Amazon Freevee. Network Ten will retain the first-run rights for new episodes in Australia.

Ever since the news was announced last week, speculation has been rife in the media and among fans over the form that Neighbours' next chapter will take.

Some viewers have wondered whether the show will move away from its soap format once it moves to streaming. Others have speculated over the possibility of a limited run of episodes.

However, a source has now exclusively told Digital Spy that hundreds of new episodes will be made when the show goes back into production next year.

An insider told us: "The plan is for Neighbours to keep its format as a high-volume daily soap opera, so it'll still be the show that fans know and love.

"Plans are being made for two new seasons, which will run for 200 episodes each. It's an incredible result for fans, who thought they'd seen the last of the show when the finale aired in July.

"The logic for Freevee is that daily episode drops will keep fans checking back on the streaming service and engage with other content available."

The news means that Neighbours will reach its milestone 9,000th episode, having finished up with Episode 8,903 in July.

200-episode seasons would mean fewer episodes than when the show aired on Channel 5. It works out as enough to air 40 weeks per year, if the soap airs in the established format of five episodes per week.

This could mean the show taking breaks with a mid-season finale and season finale, although details of how the episodes will be released won't be officially announced until nearer the time.

Freevee already carries out a strategy of daily episode releases with Judge Judy's new show Judy Justice ? another original commission, which is currently on its second season.

A spokesperson for Freevee declined to comment on the number of commissioned episodes for Neighbours, telling Digital Spy: "Amazon Freevee and Fremantle are in the early stages of planning the next chapter of the show."

A spokesperson for Fremantle also declined to comment.

Last week, Neighbours' executive producer Jason Herbison told Digital Spy that he hoped the show would be back in people's regular viewing routines when it returns in the second half of 2023.

He said: "We have many more announcements ahead, so stay tuned. I can assure you there are a lot of new episodes on the way. We have been a big part of people's lives and we hope to be again."

Stefan Dennis (Paul Robinson), Jackie Woodburne (Susan Kennedy), Alan Fletcher (Karl Kennedy) and Ryan Moloney (Toadie Rebecchi) are all returning for the new episodes, which begin filming in April.

Neighbours stars begging to return to the new series reboot
The, now, jobless actors in a scramble to get their roles back.

https://www.nowtolove.com.au/celebrity/tv/neighbours-reboot-drama-75750

Just a few months ago, Aussies came together to celebrate the end of beloved soap Neighbours, but in a shock announcement last week it was confirmed the series would return!

While fans around the world are elated, Woman's Day can reveal that behind the scenes of the reboot there's enough tension and drama to give scriptwriters inspiration to pen another decade's worth of outlandish episodes.

With just four of its most beloved actors signed up for the reboot, including Jackie Woodburne (Susan Kennedy), Alan Fletcher (Karl Kennedy), Ryan Moloney (Jarrod "Toadfish" Rebecchi) and Stefan Dennis (Paul Robinson), fans can expect a very different soap to the one we all farewelled four months ago, which included a big splashy and expensive Kylie-clad finale.

Top TV insiders reveal the new series will have a much smaller cast and likely only film 13 episodes a season to slash the huge production costs that left the series in the red. Sadly, our source reveals many of the other actors left jobless earlier this year have already begun phoning and begging production for their old jobs back.

Secret Deal

Executive producer Jason Herbison from production company Fremantle is said to have been secretly working behind the scenes to save Neighbours for months, and last week locked in a deal with streaming service Amazon to buy the rebooted series and air it in Australia, the UK, US, Canada and New Zealand.

The deal was only inked after Jason secretly met up with Stefan, Jackie, Alan and Ryan at their homes to invite them back, revealing that Amazon had thrown the soap a lifeline. He says the four actors, who were rumoured to have previously earned $15,000 a week, jumped at the chance.

"It's been such a tightly held secret and very few people have been in the know, even behind the scenes," the source explains, adding, "I know his phone has been ringing hot with desperate former cast members wanting their old jobs back because many are now unemployed".

Indeed, it's been a tough time for so many Australian actors, who were forced to compete against each other for work. Upon the announcement, actor Takaya Honda, who played David Tanaka, took to social media to reveal that the rest of the cast knew nothing about the reboot. Actress April Rose Pengilly, who starred as Chloe Brennan, aired her grievances as well, after being "left in the dark" by production, something she revealed happened a lot during her tenure.

"We love them and are happy," she said of the returning four actors, before explaining, "I think some didn't even tell their families. I get why we had to be kept in the dark too, but it's a tough situation... This happened a fair bit, being dropped without warning and us being blindsided and then bombarded by questions... it's just a lot."

Sadly, Neighbours icons including Rebekah Elmaloglou and Annie Jones have been left out of any formal announcements, with a dark cloud looming over their future in the revitalised new series. While EP Jason insists he's still in the process of resetting and planning the next chapter for beloved characters, sources concede there is going to be a "bloodbath" when it comes to further casting as the pressure to keep the show viable against Home And Away and streaming giants heats up.

Neighbours 2.0 is said to be shot at the Nunawading studios where the interiors and Lassiters scenes were produced, and Jason is hopeful he can once again secure the old Ramsay St, which in reality is Pin Oak Court in Melbourne's Vermont South.

Neighbours could pave way for more streaming soaps as Freevee explains revival
The soap is being revived by Amazon's free streaming service.

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/neighbours/a42133413/neighbours-streaming-soaps-freevee-revival/

Last month it was announced that Neighbours was set to return to our screens after being revived by streaming service Amazon Freevee.

The soap, which aired on Channel 5 in the UK, was cancelled earlier this year after 37 years, with the last episode airing in July.

Now, Amazon Studios? head of original content Lauren Anderson and head of licensed content for the UK Shahina O?Mahoney have explained why they decided to bring us back to Ramsey Street.

"As time went on, the reaction to the show ending didn?t lessen," O?Mahoney explained to Broadcast Now. "There are very few shows that get a reaction like that.

"People grew up with Neighbours ? it's part of the TV fabric of the UK. We can?t save every show, but we chose this one because of how deeply its fans cared about it."

The soap will begin airing on Freevee in the latter half of 2023 and it will continue to air episodically, rather than being released as a boxset.

"First and foremost, we have to keep current fans happy," Anderson explained. "Then we can introduce the series to new audiences."

O?Mahoney added: "We?ve got people on the ground ensuring that Neighbours loses none of the essence that makes it great."

O?Mahoney ended by hinting that Neighbours may not be the only soap to feature on Freevee.

"We?re always looking to surprise our customers and who would have expected a soap on Freevee?" she added. "It?s not going to be the last soap-style show we have."

Amazon Freevee Executives on Saving ?Neighbours?: ?We?re Going to Do Everything We Have to Do to Deliver a Consistent Series?

https://variety.com/2022/tv/global/neighbours-amazon-freevee-new-season-details-1235453012/

Amazon Freevee executives have vowed that their new season of ?Neighbours? will maintain the same quality and production values of its long-running linear predecessor.

?We?re going to do everything we have to do ? in front of and behind the camera ? to make sure that we?re delivering a consistent series,? Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD original content and programming for Amazon Studios, tells Variety.

?A few signals are that cast members are coming back, so we?re able to welcome what the show has been from a production value standpoint, from a casting and talent standpoint, and producers behind the scenes,? says Anderson, noting that cast members Stefan Dennis, Alan Fletcher, Jackie Woodburne and Ryan Moloney will all return.

?We are continuing the show to at least the same level of what audiences have loved for 37 years. The most important thing to us is to make sure that those who love the show already continue to love the show.?

Amazon dropped a bombshell in November when it revealed that the iconic Australian soap had found a new home on the streamer?s AVOD platform Freevee.

News of ?Neighbours?? cancellation broke in March after its primary funder, U.K. broadcaster Channel 5, pulled out of the show citing a scheduling shake-up. Though the show?s producer and distributor Fremantle had been holding talks with prospective new partners, a frontrunner had yet to materialize by the time the series finale aired in late July. The Freevee pick-up came almost four months after the show ended, as many fans had just about lost hope that the soap would ever return.

?At that point that the show ended, we did not know that we could save it,? says Shahina O?Mahoney, head of licensed content for Amazon Freevee U.K. ?In an ideal world, maybe you do announce something like that before it ends, but that wasn?t an option for us.?

The London-based O?Mahoney describes ?quite a shock? back in March upon hearing the show was ending. ?[It aired for] 37 years and was such a stalwart of the U.K. broadcast landscape. I was really surprised. Then we saw the fan and customer reaction, and it just grew and grew and grew.?

The outpouring among grieving fans was enough to convince the Freevee team that they should look into saving the program, says O?Mahoney. ?It was almost irresponsible not to look into it.? she quips.

Yet launching a soap on a streaming service is ?no small matter,? admits the long-time Amazon executive. Though Freevee has some experience launching a daily show on the service thanks to ?Judge Judy? spin-off ?Judy Justice,? which premiered in November 2021, a scripted proposition is vastly different.

Freevee, which plans to air ?Neighbours? in the second half of 2023, will premiere the show exclusively, for free, in the U.K. and U.S. The platform has also bought streaming rights to 2,000-plus episodes from the previous seasons, which will be available prior to the new series? premiere. ?Neighbours? will also stream on SVOD counterpart Prime Video in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. (Australia?s Network 10, the home of ?Neighbours? for 36 years, will retain first-run rights in the country.)

So, why is ?Neighbours? launching on Freevee and not Prime Video? Anderson explains that there are ?two realities? at play.

?[It was about] understanding that a show like this is obviously huge in the U.K. and Australia but we know there?s an opportunity elsewhere, so how do we bring the whole of Amazon together to make this work for customers globally?? she says. ?That was the beauty of having a service that?s both in front of and behind the paywall: we could offer it both to Freevee customers who may have a Prime Video subscription but may not, and also offer the show to customers in territories where Freevee hasn?t launched yet.?

Freevee is currently up and running in the U.K., U.S. and Germany.

The new season is currently in pre-production, with more concrete story details set to be worked out by the end of Q1 next year, promises Anderson.

?What we?re moving through is what do we want the arc of the first season to be? How do we create a world that?s at once a continuation and also the start of something new?? says the executive. ?Because that?s essentially it: the storyline in a lot of ways is going to mirror what?s happening with the series. It?s a continuation, but it?s in a new place.?
