Derek has been explaining to Makosi why he would personally never choose to bring up a child as part of a gay marriage.

Thanks to society's traditional views, including the Tories who were "a party of convention and didn't want change", he worried that it would simply be unfair to the child, making them an easier target for bullies.

"When you're a child, however wonderful your daddy and daddy might be, the most difficult thing of all to manage is difference," the right-winger sighed.

Reckons Derek's good dad material

Derek felt however much he wanted a child, adopting would be selfish. The speechwriter reasoned the child's welfare should be put first, instead of "fulfilling the whims of adults".

But Makosi wouldn't accept his argument. "Don't you think children would gradually find it easier?" pointed out the nurse and Derek conceded that in the future it would probably be accepted.

Makosi didn't think he should have to wait. Instead of holding out for change, she instructed Derek, "It should start with you."

Now there's something to think about.
