Gifted speechwriter Derek has given Eugene a task to help the boffin become a gripping conversationalist.

The Tory listened sympathetically as Eugene bemoaned his rambling.

"It's possible for me to say relatively little compared to other people but it will be perceived as, 'Oh, Eugene's bantering on again'," he sighed.

The engineer felt his monotone style often led people to think, "Eugene's talking equals Eugene's been talking all day."

'Nodding understandingly, Derek wisely pointed out, "The art of saying something is not just about using beautiful words."

Racking his brains for a scheme to improve his Housemate's speech, Derek set Eugene a challenge. "See how quickly you can make a point, so the listener understands something you say concisely," he suggested.

Although happy for his friend's advice, Eugene looked a little a wee bit daunted. "It'll need a hell of a lot of mental effort," he reckoned.

Shouldn't be a problem for a brain like yours Eugene!
