Housewives gains critics' award

Comedy drama Desperate Housewives has been named the programme of the year at the Television Critics Assocation award in Los Angeles.

Lost, a drama about plane crash survivors marooned on a desert island, won two awards, including outstanding achievement in drama.

The programme is due to start in the UK on Channel 4 shortly.

British actor Hugh Laurie won an acting award for House, while BBC America's The Office Special was also honoured.

The Television Critics's Association, which was founded in 1978, includes more than 200 reporters and columnists in the US and Canada's print media.

Desperate Housewives, which has proved a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, gained 15 Emmy nominations earlier this month, with three of its main stars vying for best actress.

Hugh Laurie is nominated for his role in House, while The Office Special is also in the running for an Emmy award. Other British actors who also figure in the nominations are Ian McShane and Kenneth Branagh. Will And Grace and Everybody Loves Raymond have also been nominated heavily for the Emmys, which will be decided at an awards ceremony in Los Angeles on 18 September.
